Tottenham to hand incoming Andre Villas-Boas £70m war chest
The Portuguese will be tasked with returning Spurs to the Champions League when he is unveiled as the new man in charge at White Hart Lane as Harry Redknapp's replacement

Andre Villas-Boas will be given £70 million to spend to get Tottenham back into the Champions League when he is named as the club’s new manager.he Portuguese is expected to be officially announced as Harry Redknapp’s replacement on a three-year deal on Monday after impressing chairman Daniel Levy with his vision for the Londoners and fighting off competition from Laurent Blanc.

Villas-Boas will handed a massive war chest to meet his target of getting Spurs back into Europe's premier competition and has already been involved in the club’s moves in the summer transfer market.

The 34-year-old, who was sacked by Chelsea in March, has approved an £8m deal for Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson which will be confirmed in the next 24 hours while Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen is set to follow shortly in a £9.6m switch.

Spurs are expected to sell midfielder Luka Modric this summer, with Real Madrid leading the race to sign the £35m-rated Croatian - but Villas-Boas has been assured he will be able to reinvest the money to improve the squad.

He wants to sign at least two strikers, a creative midfielder to replace Modric and a goalkeeper who can become Tottenham’s long-term No.1, with 41-year-old Brad Friedel set to retire at the end of coming season.

Villas-Boas has been assured he will be given financial backing and is happy with the club’s plans to have a specialised transfer committee that will include Tim Sherwood, who is highly-rated at White Hart Lane and will be promoted from his existing role as technical co-ordinator.

Spurs are pressing ahead with their attempts to sign Emmanuel Adebayor from Emirates Marketing Project following his loan spell last season, while the likes of Loic Remy, Joao Moutinho, and Hugo Lloris have been mentioned as potential targets.

The Londoners were given a huge boost last week when Gareth Bale signed a new four-year contract and expect to free up a significant portion of their wage budget by selling a number of fringe players including Vedran Corluka, Niko Kranjcar, Giovani dos Santos, David Bentley and Heurelho Gomes.

Villas-Boas convinced Spurs that he has not been been scarred by his eight-month experience at Chelsea and fits the club’s desire for a young, progressive manager who can make the most of the new training ground in Enfield, lower the average age of the squad and find value in the transfer market.

You cant buy playuers in order of preference, it just doesnt happen. So you have to buy them when they become available/opportunistically.

Appreciate that. However we had quite a lot of work to do in teh transfer market this summer to patch up holes in the squad (such as the 2 CFs, winger and CB which I mentioned) even setting aside other transfers which will inevtiably happen because the new manager doesnt like certain players or because they dont fit into the system which the new guy wants to employ

We have 40 days until we play Saudi Sportswashing Machine away in our opening game - thats not much time to get the work mentioned above done hence the frustration with apparent lack of progress on the priorities

if the club has found a new manager, why not just post an article on the homepage welcoming the new guy bla bla bla, and then say the official presentation will be on lets say weds or thurs

what the fcuk is with all the mystery, i mean if it is AVB then the whole world already knows about it anyway. There is no big surprise

whats the big fricken secrecy, waiting, fan torture

Because it is really Guardiola

:-"

Unless it's 99% done and only announcements have to be made.

And hence me saying 'apparent' lack of progress. I work in a not dis-similar business (buying/selling companies though rather than players!) and know that any deal is never completed until its completed. Things can be 99% done but getting the last 1% finalised can take as much work as the previous 99%!

So in actual fact it was only 50% done and not 99%.. ;)

As stated, it could be we have all our ducks in a row ready to fall...

WE as fans never know anything tangible until its done, which is that final 1% you speak of. Before then there could be huge amounts going on without us knowing at all.

All we can do is watch it all unfold.

Which is also why complaining about the order of buys seems futile to me, it just never works that way

If that's after sale of players then it's closer to £10m net which is around what we usually spend.
Articles like this isn't helping us getting our targets at better price though

I wasnt neessarily referring to order; its more the efforts. And I I said, its the 'apparent' lack of progress which makes things frustrating. On paper, we have a huge amount of work to do....maybe there are lots of deals nearly done and we're going to announce a blitz of deals however the only instances when I can remember that happening before and when Abramovic bought cheatski and, on a much cheaper scale, the summer when Santini/Jol arrived at Spurs

This is true. The article mentions the money from the Modric sale being made available. Add to that the money from the Charlie and Niko transfers, and the hopefully impending Jenas, Bentley, Pienaar, Gomes, Dos Santos and Bassong deals, and we're really not looking at much of a net spend.

In fact, I'd argue that we're spending somewhat less than we should, considering the profits made in the last few transfer windows. But yes, our net spend will almost definitely fall into the affordable, self-sustaining range, which is something that tends to go overlooked by the crooning Chelski and City fans eager to accuse us of hypocrisy.

Could also be a matter of priority. Look at what we (apparently!) have so far, CB (much needed) and versatile AM (also much needed IMO)

Assuming just a striker came in for the rest of the summer we would be a little thin, but ok - with potential to make moves in Jan.

Alternatively, the striker we want might be really expensive - perhaps we need to sell before we can move on that deal?

Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Carlos Cuellar on a two-year contract following his exit from Aston Villa.

If we got rid of that lot (8 players!) as well as Nelsen/Saha/Gallas (and possibly King) then I venture that the wage will be be reduced SUBSTANTIALLY.

And also that we are far from likely to replace with as many players. It could be that we bring in fewer, high calibre players - or it could be that we bring in Sigudrsson type young/quality/relatively cheap players and maintain a lower bill.

I imagine this is also how we can afford the likes of Bales new contract

Not spending much net however really might not be a disaster though given that a lot of the players which you mentioned above contributed very little if at all last season. If we get in the players we need this window and keep some powder dry for the next one that's ok with me given that the new guy will presumably learn a lot about the squad over the first half season or so and might then want to tweak it

Looking at those players none will be missed based upon last season.

Pienaar and Bassong could be of use, but it seems they will go.

So of the 8 dubai listed, maybe 2 purchases need to be made.

Then of those already released? Only Gallas/Nelsen need be replaced with one fit CB. (Caulker perhaps)

So while we could conceivably ship out 11 or so players, that doesnt mean for a second we need to buy that many!

Before we start replacing them, yes.

Thats 8 players to the 25 man squad. Caulker and Naughton returning bring it to 6 already. 5 first team quality buys and a promotion from the academy?

but this will leave us with about 17 players!!
