Rodrigo Bentancur

Will be interesting to see what happens with Bentancur in the following weeks and then as the season progresses.

Seemingly been ahead of Bissouma in the pecking order for a little while with him playing PL and Bissouma getting the EL games. Both mostly playing well. But probably more a competition between the two rather than one being clearly ahead of the other.

Didn't manage to do much to stem the tide out change the game when things went sour at Brighton. Can definitely understand calls for Bissouma instead to add more press resistance.

Though my impression is also that some of Bentacur's shortcomings in that role is more about him still learning that role and a lack of experience playing there rather than technical shortcomings.

Will be interesting to see if he can step up another level in terms of how he plays that rather specific role over time. He seems to be at least very close to his physical best now. But wondering if we could still see further improvement.

Although selection is in the main about who is playing well and on form, if its close, other factors come into play, and in Biss or Bents case we might be looking to eek as much out of Bentancur as possible considering a ban is incoming. Also he's banned for his country currently so can rest up during international breaks. Biss can play in the less demanding EL so hopefully avoiding injury, and PL red and yellow cards.

I think Bents can still play in the EL, so flip it around when the ban comes.

He can play in any comp not run by the FA
 
Not understanding here. When do we find out the length of the FA ban? Has that been announced?

It seems like this has been going on for ages.

Definitely a good point. More complex than I made it out to be. As you say it's at least close. Closer than I think perhaps was expected between the two of them before the season started.

I think it's great having such competition between two excellent calibre players. And ones that can do the same job, but in a different style. Whichever starts, being able to switch around 60-70 minutes is a powerful statement too (we should def have done this against Brighton)

It's interesting that they are both 90% brilliant players. Bentancur has his injury rehab that means he's not quite there, and Biss is prone to his mental lapses. But in some ways both of those are curable. But even if one irons that out, we'll be laughing.

Definitely agree that it's good to have both. Squad planning panning out to some extent at least.

Not sure I agree they're 90% brilliant players. I rate Bentancur very highly, definitely noticed on here that I rate him higher than most. But he has some issues in addition to injury related stuff for that role.

Would be awesome if one or both of them could iron out some of that stuff at least.
 
Can Bissouma and Bentancur play together in a midfield 3?
If not with our current staff, would someone like Angel Gomes (who we are apparently in for) make a difference as to whether they can or not?

Bentancur can definitely play 8, as well as 4.

Gomez isnt made for this league. He's too small and a liability without the ball.

Maddison and Sarr are giving us great options in the 8 this season anyway (as are Kulu and Bergvall in the 10). Those 6 CMs (plus Gray) are brilliantly balanced i feel.
 
Another very good game from him imo.

Defending deep and high, winning duels, good on the ball also under pressure.

Have been hoping for him to grow into this role and think he may be doing that.

Partnered well with Bissouma in the second half too.

I've been hoping to have the pre-injury version of him back.

Pre-injury imo he was on track to be an elite player, it's been a long road back but looking better each game
