Politics, politics, politics

It's like when people say "Man Utd fans are xyz" - there are all sorts of Man Utd fans, you can't lump them all together as one person.
Nah, they really are all clams.

Just seen Peston's a fudging gooner too. I knew there was something off about him. I suspect there's a goon plot to take power nationally and prevent us completing the building of Mega Lane. Don't say I didn't warn you.

What is chaotic? The cabinet will be in place by teatime and David Davis will rock up to Brussels in 10 days' time as planned.

All that has in effect happened is the working majority has been decreased from something like 17 to 8.

She called an election because she thought 17 wasn't enough of a majority to see it through. So 8, a shredded reputation and no mandate certainly isn't.

What happens though when the Torys and DUP take us out of Europe and there is a 'hard border' between the Republic and Northern Ireland?

There's other solutions. E.g. a medium border for Eire and a hard border for Britain (i.e. Eire tightens up on illegals and no EU citizens let on flights or ferries from any of Ireland without a British passport or appropriate holiday/work visa.)

I don't think it's as simple as that, because there will be a conflict of interest re. Brexit between the DUP and the Tory hard right, and the Tory hard right have even more power now than they did before (which is why May wanted/needed a bigger majority). And that's before you take into account factions in the Tory party that want rid of May and can now very easily undermine her. It is a hundred times more chaotic than before she called the election, imo. May cannot last.

Yeah, I get ya, I just don't think the Brexit situation was particularily healthy for Northern Ireland already, and DUP in Westminster can't help peace.

There's nothing to unite people like a common enemy. Once the negotiations get underway, I think parliamentary and public opinion will swing a bit more 1940.

I'm certainly no expert but I didn't see a big issue here either. If there's universal agreement that Ireland don't want a hard border, isn't that served by a hard border to the mainland, with NI citizens exempted?

The issue isn't just people, it's goods and services. Businesses on both sides of the boarder are used to goods and services moving freely. If we leave the customs union then there has to be a hard boarder or else the rest of the EU will just trade through the Republic to get open access to the UK with no reciprocal access for UK based companies.

They've tried that since last summer. It's been rejected by the electorate.

cabinet reshuffle postponed

won't be in place by tea time

She hasn't got a lot of room for manoeuvre. There isn't a lot of talent to promote and what is to stop senior cabinet members refusing to move? I wonder if she will swallow her pride and bring Gove back? Returns for Morgan and Grieve might signal a more consensual approach and buy her time but would ultimately further undermine her authority.
