When you have access to a labour pool of 500m rather than 60m of course it is far easier to employ people. Especially when you can pay more than these relatively unqualified people get paid in their own countries, and speaking English fluently is not needed. This is obvious isn't it, simple logic?
Never mind that people were told it wouldn't be an issue pre-Brexit. Although Covid muddies the waters and has led to all sorts of supply and movement issues, it is safe to say that another brexit myth is being busted. We will miss access to the EU labour pool. There will be more needless bureaucracy to try to address with visas, and probably inflationary pressures.
Even pre-brexit when this was discussed it was noteworthy that no one who made the argument that we should use British workers for these jobs, fancied doing these jobs themselves or getting their kids to do these jobs
The only way to change that is to degrade the UK economy to the extent that people want dead-end jobs. Hopefully, that doesn't happen.

EU workers papered over the cracks of the ongoing, smaller shortfall we had. Not that that's an issue IMO - I don't care where employees are from.
But this problem would look the same without Brexit - the problem is not being able to train new drivers to match the numbers leaving the profession every year. It's not a job young people tend to be attracted to, so a larger than normal proportion of the workforce is retiring every year. It's also an industry where diagnosed illnesses (such as diabetes or epilepsy) make it next to impossible to continue working, unlike others.

You've been reading the right-wing press again? It is so obvious there TWO factors at work here. Covid and Brexit. Germany, Poland and CZ don't have shortages of fuel and people queueing up at forcourts like it was the 70s again do they? Their driver shortages are half as bad, but the right-wing press will tell you it has nothing to do with Brexit. The reality is, the UK is hit harder than the continent because of the double whammy.
No, I've been listening to our manager, customers and suppliers in the EU who all have the same problems.
They don't have any fuel shortages and neither do we - we've just got a bunch of departs filling tanks that don't need filling.
We can solve this problem by having a priority system in place for filling up. Those that are retired go to the back of the queue, those who require a lot of fuel (V12 owners) go to the front.

Fruit pickers, vets, chicken choppers etc Reducing your available labour pool from 500m to 60-70m is not going to have any effect?

Went past my local garage yesterday and there was a small queue of elderly people who probably didn't need to be out anyway.
If people only filled up when they needed to there would be no problem, but people are on the whole selfish idiots who are paranoid about missing out. I'm not saying there aren't shortages, there clearly are, but it is exacerbated by people's behaviour. How much fuel are people collectively using in queues?

I had a bad morning so thought I would actually read this thread to cheer myself up. It worked, I can not believe how wrong most in this thread are about most issues. It is funny to be honest.
Imagine the thought of working class guys wanting better pay. Nah I don't want those mainly white working class, common accent scumbags getting better wages. Filth pure filth and as for training up people who are unemployed and giving them a purpose to their days, no chance. Rather they sat on benefits they do not bother me.
You know more then left or right I think the issue is with how some of you guys view the working class, it is deplorable really.
Would not bother me if my son wanted to be a lorry driver, though he is in his final year before 6 form and is finally getting down to work as he wants to be a graphic designer whatever the hell that is.
You should know I'm an advocate of free movement of any commodity - including labour.
We are selecting from a pool of roughly 5Bn people - our govt's just too obsessed with quotas to see it.
