Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Its quite exciting what is going on in Syria. I like how Russia's frozen conflicts are steadily unfreezing as they become weaker.

I hope they go fully east after Damascus and kick the Russians and Israelis out for good too. And obviously that the moderates keep balancing the rebel alliance and initiate the journey to democracy. Syria is a country that has so much potential.

A nice side outcome will be if this finally helps the Kurds get a nation of their own (perhaps merging their Iraqi and Syrian held territories). Theyve been screwed over by the world more than about any people this last century.
It's not exciting at all. Like with Sadam in Iraq, these dictators keep the Islamist nutters in check. We've continually armed and trained the rebels due to the proxy conflict against Russia. The main rebel group making these advances are islamists that are not interested in democracy. We never learn just like when we armed and trained Al Qaeda to fight the Russians in Afghan Ir ended up biting us massively.

Was reading somewhere that it was Al Qeda that were proding the fires of teh people and getting them riled up.... But it was believed that climate change was the instigator, due to an on going draught... Which wouldn't have been a problem, if not for the fact that of over use of aquifiers bled them dry, leaving the people with nothing to fall back on...

Then Christians were targetted post Arab Spring, in Eygypt and elsewhere... Was many years ago and details fail me.

Islam, the religion of peace my fecking arse it is.

All the sounds so far are promising - explicit promises of no retribution, transitional government, international co-operation etc. Plenty of people like Nelson Mandela or Martin McGuiness made an easy transition from terrorist to government. Context is everything

Al Qaeda and the Taliban are celebrating the rebel victory and are already directing them to turn on "jews and crusaders" within the country. Meanwhile the Kurdish rebels in Syria hold swathes of the north and while Russia gave up full support of Assad in the end, Turkish forces are still fighting the Kurds due to the large Kurdish separatist movement in Turkey. This is a tinder box very similar to the void after the toppling of Sadam in Iraq and the descent into outright civil war between rebel factions with Russian, Turkish and western meddling continuing is almost inevitable.

Part of the problem in Iraq was trying to keep 3 separate people together in an artificial British-drawn state. IS grew out of the oppressed Sunnis in a Shia majority. Syria is a bit more homogenous. If the Kurds are left to do their own thing (like in Iraq), its pretty much entirely Sunni, so it shouldn't have the same Sunni-Shia problems as Iraq did.

While in government he was still one of the de facto leaders of an organisation that was staging bank robberies, collecting protection money, and carrying out punishment beatings and kneecappings.

Aside from that he was fully committed to legal and peaceful means.

I didn't like him. But it was a transition from war to peace, and him and Ian Paisley were the bridge that created the foundations for that.

is any religion actually peaceful?

Struggle to think of one that hasn't had a conquest/evangelically stage at some point or is used as a bringer of misery in other forms.

Or is that the religion itself isn't the issue but the people who use it as a tool of power grabbing and control the issue?

Personally against all religious cults and the issues they cause on both personal, local and global scales.

No I like to bathe in custard, people are doing horrific things under the guise of Christianity and Catholicism round the world still, the bible used in this country has had to be rewritten a few times to make it far less discriminating, its still not there.

But as your highlighting proves IMO, its about extremists who use it to their own gain, not everyone that practices it.

Sounds like capitalism.

Peace was achieved by the UK government giving away everything and taking nothing from the table.

Imagine trying to buy something from a salesman who keeps haggling you down on price - that's all he did.

Successful businesses do hire more people....

Infact they do as much as the can not to, unless it is absolutely neccassry.

And you have clearly never struggled have?

You really haven't got a clue about living on £10 a week, or despite working, not being able to put heating on over winter, becaue you can't afford it.

It's not working, because more and more people are struggling to make ends meet... Not being able to afford a healthly diet...

Sorry, but on this subject you are clueless... Just becaue it worked for you, doesn;t mean it is working for everyone else.

It's not working, because people who are working, even minimum wage, should have to worry about about rent, bills, and struggle to raise their children.

The system is brick, it only benfits the few.
Fail ok the assumptions there but not to worry.

I've had to go straight from work to a bar job, 5 hrs sleep and repeat just to get the rent paid. But that was my choice - I wanted to live in SW London. The option of working for minimum wage and paying a tiny fraction of the rent/mortgage in the north was always available to me, just like it was anyone else.

Successful businesses have to employ people to expand. Those few who can get away without it will invest in plant & equipment. Someone has to make that, they have employees, those businesses take on employees, etc.
