Paulinho

Re: Official - Paulinho

Was yet another poor performance from him and I agree with what the guy who said he missed our midfield when you knew what the players roles were. I understand even attacking players should do some defending and defensive players should be able to string together a pass or two. But we seem to have gone for all round players who are all round average.

From the summer I thought his best position was as the "lampard" role but that is also siggys best position and depending on who you believe also eriksen and lamela. Some do not want to blame the Director of football, some do not want to blame avb, some do not want to blame levy.

Someone is to blame and this lack of accountabilty is what is hurting this club we have no direction, I did not like avb towards the end but we would have been better off signing only the players he wanted. I would prefer to go back to Redknapp with the whole "spurs fans have never had it so good with the football they are seeing" because we had an identity and a direction we lack that now.

I also miss the days when my non-Spurs supporting mates and the media loved to watch us because we were the 'most exciting team in the league'

Re: Official - Paulinho

Bloke would be a world class referee. Never seems to interfere with play at all.

Re: Official - Paulinho

Hopefully he's playing with the World Cup in mind, i.e. trying not to get injured, and comes back as a good player after the summer...

I don't accept that though. I just don't.

He is paid, by US, to perform to his maximum at all times.

If that's the case he's a ****ing fraud.

Re: Official - Paulinho

Actually can't believe we paid £16 million for this guy. £8 million might've been closer

Re: Official - Paulinho

I haven't liked him as a player from day one. Is he really significantly better for Brazil? I only saw him in one game in the Confederations Cup and was underhelmed then too. Just has no ability to move the ball from our defenders to our attackers, which is surely the primary function of any central midfielder.

Re: Official - Paulinho

He wind me up big time at the moment. In a midfield two he is lost. He is not a defensive player or a pure attacking player. It just seems to pass him by most games.

Re: Official - Paulinho

I think Paulinho is becoming a blame figure for anything that doesn't go right for the club. Last night I thought that he had an ok game, certainly no worse than others. He started the game with intent, making hard fought challenges and even sliding tackles. He made some good passes too through the game.

My concern is that I think he operates best when he can drift in to the hole just behind the strikers. Yesterday, Kane was designated to play that role, Paulinho could not find the spaces that he thrives in as these were already occupied.

No, that's Sherwoods' role.

Last night I thought he was terrible, shirked every challenge, played with his head down and his mind elsewhere. I distincly remember one point he was out right played a crap through ball threading it between three defenders and when the ball didn't reach his man he turned away and walked back towards the centre of the field as Benfica broke away at pace.

If that is what he doing, he needs to be dropped immediately and sold after the WC.

That would be a disgraceful attitude to have.

Re: Official - Paulinho

Even in the first few weeks of the season I thought this guy was no better than what Jenas offers, but thought he'd grow into a better player as he gets used to English football. Now I rate him lower than Jenas. Everyone just thinks he's soemthing special cos of his fancy dan Brazilian name. All players with 'inho' at the end must be good right?

An OK game is very kind of you, when did he make those good passes? You seem very alone in your view of him yesterday. I agree that he wasn't any worse than the others, but I don't think that's an excuse. I guess you've noticed that Kaboul probably would've been lynched if GG'ers were outside the stadium yesterday? Paulinho is not a blame figure, but he's been constantly underperforming, and it's not really unfair that people are calling him on it. Bar the brilliant game against Stoke he has been way below par all season. I hope that it's a correlation with the upcoming WC in Brazil and the fact that he has had to play almost constantly for a year and a half that has contributed to his... how shall I put it... scarce contribution.

He operates best in that position, yes, but yesterday Kane was deployed there, and still we had Eriksen who's definitely our best player in that role playing on the left. Playing him in the middle (or in any position right now, really) makes him kind of redundant, he's not a dribbler (except for that one game), he's not a very good passer, he's not a tackler (maybe he is, but he sure as hell has a lack of cojones right now.) As Shakespeare once said; "Paulinho, what does he do?"

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt though, with such a price tag it would be madness to give him only one season. Hopefully he can show what he's capable of at the WC and come back with a confidence boost, fingers crossed.

Mate he was awful

Re: Official - Paulinho

Emailed a Brazilian friend of mine about this guy given that he sees his for the national team and previously back in domestic football. He said:

"He plays as a second holding midfielder. He is a good passer and finisher-- often acting as an element of surprise in attack. He is definitely not a creative midfielder (so would not be able to substitute Modric for example). I haven't seen him play this year for Tottenham, but I did see a few games end of last year and I felt he was one of their best players."

Based on that then playing alongside Sandro should be his best position. Cant say I'm convinced....

He played as a Team player yesterday..passed fought hard..but did not create..it has to be admitted..I like him as a player ..but he should think more about trying to create chances with his ball skill....he does have very quick feet..and he should play more as an attacking player IMO...........

Re: Official - Paulinho

My one hope with people like Paulinho, Soldado, Lamela etc is that they were good players at their previous clubs and havent lost that ability. We just need a decent manager

Re: Official - Paulinho

I am finding it hard to judge any player this season other than Eriksen and its a miracle that he has managed to perform under the circumstances.

Loads of changes in management, coaches, roles and tactics, its barmy really. I will reserve my judgement when the whole club is settled..

Re: Official - Paulinho

Unless he has an Aaron Ramsey style turnaround, I don't think I'll ever take to him. I wasn't impressed when watching him at the Confeds and I'm even less impressed now. Still, he's a Brazilian international, he'll be starting at the World Cup, if we wanted to get our money back then I'm sure a few clubs would pay up.
