Do you think it's a lack of match fitness / sharpness though KD? For me, I'd give him next season in terms of sorting out his injuries and form, if neither improves then yea, we'd probably have to part ways. I just think since he's come back from Pompey, when he's been truly fit, he's been really good so deserves a bit of time to see if he can get it back.

Generally i like Kaboul...i like him a lot. In fact i was one of the only ones that didn't want him to be sold to Pompey AND also one of the only ones that was very happy about his return.

I think he's not going to reach his previous high levels ever again and that's mainly due to injury. He simply doesn't justify a new contract in terms of injuries AND performance.

Yep I always remembered you being a big fan. It's a shame, but all defenders looked great alongside Ledley

we cant afford to waste a season seeing if he gets back to form. Even at his peak he often had a blonde moment or got caught ball watching.

I don't understand why we sold Caulker and kept Kaboul.

it was at a good price and kaboul seemed to be getting better.

cardiff's gone down, maybe a swap is in store.

we used to produce a steady stream of defenders from the youth team/academy system. king, gardner, dawson, caulker.... who's next in line or has the production line stopped in favour of "technical players".

Veljkovic seems to be the obvious candidate seeing as he's been ahead of the curve age-wise for some time and got a handful of Premier League minutes.

To be pedantic, Dawson didn't come through our youth/team or academy system. And I'm not sure if signing Anthony Gardner for £1m back in 2000 and developing him to where he ended up is a great source of pride for our academy/youth setup. All in all it's never been much of a steady stream, more of one absolute superstar in King and then all a bit average at best other than him up until Caulker came along.

Describing Dawson as a youth product, considering he'd already made over 80 senior appearances for Nottingham Forest and was in his 20s when we bought him, is a bit of a stretch!

Yup, aside from King and Carr none of the other Spurs youth academy defenders have made the grade in the senior team for decades as far as I can recall.

Stephen Kelly was a decent squad player and has played for other Premier League clubs at least. Alton Thelwell is the only other name which springs to mind but he appears to have disappeared down the divisions.

Sol Campbell was another that made the grade from the academy. Just a shame that he isn't a very nice person.

Ah I'd forgotten about Young and blotted out the other! So that makes 3 who became first team regulars for us plus a couple of decent squad players who came thru the Academy ranks in the 1990s. Hopefully Caulker proves to be the first of another good crop.

Right can we one way or another get this cleared up has he or has he not got another year left on his contract?

Is this guy a CB then? He came on yesterday as the holding midfielder but is the first time Ive seen him play.....

Bump...

What do people think of Kaboul then? Been a lot of negative comments after the West Ham game in various threads. I suppose the question is "will he regain the form he once showed for us?"

First of all his fitness. He's obviously struggled immensely over a long time. For me at least during this pre-season and against West Ham he looks physically right again, not worried about putting his body into challenges and seems to be moving freely. This to me is quite different to how he was at points during his injury problems where he looked uncomfortable and likely to break down at any point. This might just be wishful thinking on my part, but I think there's a real chance he's turned a corner here. Anyone think the same?

Second, his performances. I think a lot of his performances since his injuries started can be explained by a lack of consistent game time. He's looked like he's been rushed back and because he has he's often played a part in an already unsettled back 4. I didn't think his performance against West Ham was all that bad, but I've seen a lot of people disagree. Considering again the makeshift nature of our back 4 (backup right back, debutant 20 year old centre back going to 10 men debutant out of position right back and defensive midfielder as a centre back), just how early this is under the new manager and in the new season and just how long it is since Kaboul had a consistent run of competitive games I don't think too much can be said based on this game.

For me we need options, because I'm not sure we can trust that he will hold up physically with his recent injury history. But if he can keep his fitness levels up I'm optimistic about him becoming a very good centre back for us again.

I think many have decided he's finished and will simply use any little mistake to back that up. We got 30 minutes 11v11 on Saturday and it was the first game of the season. Not really something to draw conclusions from. He needs a few games in a row to settle down. Same with some of our other players. They not only need match sharpness, but that feeling of succeeding. Not worrying about making mistakes or pulling a hamstring.

He's always been a liability from the stance that he's always 'got a mistake in him', but when he has his head straight and is fit has put in some fantastic performances for us (and at times on a consistent basis). Still, I'd like to see someone more dependable in there if I'm honest.

Indeed, Kaboul just needs to build up his match fitness. When 100% fit and playing he is a rock. I think Dier is bought in as his understudy and Jan will be Kaboul's partner for the majority of games assuming everyone is fit with Dier to eventually take over in a season or two....

Most players have a mistake in them.

The main issue with Kaboul has been that he needs the right partner (like Dawson, why they've never worked together). He needed a Gallas or King next to him that could organize the back 4 and allow him to do his thing. I really think Vertonghen can be that player, will be interesting to see what would happen if Kaboul and Vertonghen could get 4-5 games next to each other in a row this season.

you are right about Kaboul needing the right kind of partner, an organiser, talker, but i dont think Vertonghen is that type. Vertonghen is a bit like Kaboul actually in that he also needs an organiser and talker alongside him imo........this is why ive been advocating bringing in Ron Vlaar. He has the age and experience, knows how to marshall a defence, takes resposibility, and i think he can work well with one of Kaboul, Vertonghen and Dier.

We're in full agreement on Vlaar.

I think Vertonghen can be that player though, although he's the only one of our current lot that has shown that ability. Had a lot of good games alongside Dawson in his first season here for example iirc.
