Holtby update. He played brilliantly on Friday and everyone at Schalke expects him to leave this month

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Lets hope we can get him in before Leeds. Would be nice to get him used to football in the FA Cup.

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

Ridiculous statement, not with Sandro being out

Exactly. We may be bringing in Holtby early partly due to Sandro's injury but he doesn't play in the same position as the other two at all. People who want to get rid of Parker this season are living in a dreamworld.

Schalke 04 have rejected an offer from Tottenham Hotspur to sign midfielder Lewis Holtby before the end of the January transfer window, it has been confirmed.

Holtby is set to join Spurs when his contract expires in June, but with Brazilian midfielder Sandro out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, the north London side approached Schalke in a bid to sign him now.

Manager of the Bundesliga outfit, Horst Heldt, confirmed they had rejected the offer, saying: "Tottenham have made an offer, which was not acceptable, therefore it was rejected.

"The transfer window is still open and Lewis has not become any cheaper."

The Germany Under-21 captain produced another impressive performance for Heldt's side on Friday when he created two goals and scored the decisive fifth in Schalke's thrilling 5-4 home win over Hanover 96.

The 22-year-old later confirmed any potential move is out of his hands, and his eyes are firmly fixed on his future with Schalke.

"I am not going to just p*** off without busting my a*** for the team," Holtby said.

"I will give my all for Schalke until the last second. Everything else must be decided by the clubs."

I watched that game - some crazy goals (shocking defending)

He looked quite good, must say

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

nice to see Huszti with a couple of good goals....very underrated player

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

I am a self-confessed ignoramus when it comes to Holtby. I had only heard of him in passing before he started being mentioned in this window, therefore it is good to see him playing in some extended highlights of a single game rather than the usual YouTube compilation.

What does seem increasingly clear is that if people are expecting a midfielder to play in the '2' of a 4-2-3-1, they're going to be disappointed. He is clearly an attacking midfielder who for us would play in the centre of the three behind the striker. I think in that role, between Bale and Lennon and behind a top striker, he'd do well, although from his stats he doesn't seem to score many goals.

What he doesn't do is relieve any pressure on us as regards Sandro's injury. Everyone's reaction to Sandro's absence seems to be 'get Holtby in now', but he won't give us any options from a defensive perspective. He plays the same role as Dempsey and Siggy from what i can tell.

as you say you have never seen him play before, so its not possible to make an overall assessment just from this video. Against Hannover he played as one of the attacking 3, but he has played deeper as one of the 2 in other games as more of a Dembele than a Sandro type. Holby offers both options thats for sure, but yes he cannot be relied upon to be a Sandro replacement

Good to know he can play as one of a more defensive pair.
How often does he play that road?

Schalke are close to agreeing to sell Lewis Holtby to Tottenham Hotspur and will put the money towards a swoop for Lyon schemer Michel Bastos.

Tottenham have secured Holtby on a pre-contractual agreement which will see him head to White Hart Lane during the summer when his Schalke deal expires. However, Spurs are trying to bring forward the move to this month, by offering Schalke a small fee.

The Bundesliga outfit rejected Spurs' initial offer, but it is thought a compromise figure of around €1.5M will be agreed this week.

And according to French sports daily L'Equipe, Schalke will then use some of this money to make an offer to Lyon for Brazilian wide-man Bastos.

The Ruhr giants are thought to be preparing a bid of around the €7M mark for the 29-year-old.

Bastos is keen to join Schalke if an agreement can be reached and for the German side, he would prove an able replacement for Holtby.

Schalke currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga, after winning just one of their last five league matches

Re: *Official* Holtby to join in July thread

I'm another who has seen little of Holtby, but reading this discussion it seems to me that he might be suited to a rejigging of our central triangle towards the classic 4-3-3 shape with him and Dembele playing in front of Parker with Parker playing a strictly sitting role:

Holtby .... Dembele
Parker
