O/T Capello Resigns / New England Manager Speculation Thread

My take on some of the candidates mentioned:

Mourinho
Amazing football manager. Great personality with the press, brilliant in the dressing room. Downside is his tendency to be a bigger attraction than the club.

Positives, to numerous to list in full.
His teams score lots of goals. Conceed hardly any. Set records. Win. He is as close to a guarantee of success as it gets.

While I appreciate he is prepared to play ugly to win I disagree with the popular notion that his teams are boring or dour to watch. At times they are simply incredible, and any side that scores as many as his do cannot be accused of defensive/dull football.

If it is at all possible to get him in then it simply has to happen. We would be genuine CL and/or PL contenders.

Wenger for England? But he's doing such a fantastic job destroying Arsenal.

I'd pretend to be Welsh rather than follow a Wenger led England.

Brendan Rodgers
If we were to rebuff the idea of a more established manager my first choice is this guy, I think he is doing superb things with Swansea.

I appreciate their playing style started some time back with the likes of Martinez and Paulo Sousa, but its undeniable Rodgers has taken them up a level (in footballing terms not just literally Championship - Premiership)

What impresses me with him is the clear attention to detail. Over Christmas he made (I think) 9 changes from one game to the next, the team performed to exactly the same standard in exactly the same way, such was the preparation they went through.

When he bought Graham, and Routledge, he explained just how long he had been trailing them, how he had analysed them, how he was confident they would do what he required and be good enough.

He has worked at a big club with expensive players with big Egos in his time at Chelsea, and Im sure picked up a lot from Mourinho while he was at it.

He carries himself well, with dignity, and is a very interesting person to hear talk about the game.

And thats all aside from the fact that Swansea are playing some of the best football in this division. Possession based, composed, skillfull football - one of only a few teams I will actively seek to watch outside of Spurs.

Also willing to give young players a chance, in fact he seems to actively rely on them. While this may be a symptom of managing a very tight budget, he does a brilliant ob with young players none the less.

David Moyes
Please GHod NO!

I acknowledge the job he has done (and is doing) at Everton is brilliant. He has been literally superb and has wrung some incredible results out of such meagre resources, but...

I dont think any Spurs fan could tolerate his style of football at all. And to think he would suddenly become an attacking officionado is simply wishful thinking.

Harry had always shown a tendancy for width and attacking play, if only in spells, as the players at his dosposal often dictated a pragmatic approach.

Coyle, Holloway, Martinez, Mowbray and Rodgers (to name a few) have all shown (to varying degrees of success) you can CHOOSE to play GOOD football despite being on the football breadline.

Moyes never has. His team are dirty, persistent foulers. Physical to the very edge of what is legal. Defensive, men behind the ball tactics and this isnt something anyone can reliably predict will change.

You can reliably predict though that this approach will not be tolerated.

There is also his transfer record, at the low cost end its very impressive. So many bargains that became integral players for him. However, I venture that whenever he has spent larger sums his record becomes VERY sketchy VERY quickly.

Not a future Spurs manager for me.

Arsene Wenger

Perfect candidate. He knows the premier league and all the English players. He doesn't have to spend money and only has to win a trophy every four years.

Brendan Rodgers

It's such a risk though mate....I agree with your sentiments though, if we go down that route I'd be happy with him or Lambert at Norwich.

Did I see somewhere today Rodgers has just signed a new contract? Not that means much these days....

It is a risk, which is why I said at the very top about not going for a more established manager...

I think if given the choice I would want someone I KNOW would be quality rather than THOUGHT MIGHT be quality.

But, if we went for him I would be certainly very interested to see how it developed.

I believe I saw his contract was extended, had to laugh really, the timing of it.

redknapp gets off - Capello quits - Swansea think "fudge! Better protect ourselves from Spurs poaching our manager!" :D

I think it will be Woy Hodgson. Why? Cos I think WBA board are trigger happy and may well push him out. I also think that WBA may well get relegated.

The meeting with Ramos was partly prompted by Jol's earlier meeting with Saudi Sportswashing Machine. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Kemsley, among others, never forgave him for it. Nor did they trust him.

In which case they should have sacked him at the end of the previous season and given the new manager the summer to work with Comolli on bringing in the players he wanted and had pre-season with the squad.

The f*ck up was the timing and getting caught.

I liked old Tackleberry, I liked the way he set his stall out

team play that was like having your eyeballs run over a cheesegrater, if you were a spurs fan

The major risk with some of the up and coming names mentioned is that if they don't hit the ground running the potential some of our bigger name players may see the grass is greener elsewhere may increase. That is what really worries me, making sure that we can keep our best players and build on them. This period could be rocky.

Lol that couldn't of been related to events with England....could it?!(I'm aware you were half joking) I mean even if Redknapp does go, going for Rodgers would still be very left field even if a few of us on here did see him as a viable option. I'd be extremely surprised if our main targets weren't big names from around Europe.....

I do wonder quite how much of an offer this really is. I tend to think if players are well paid, winning, and enjoying themselves then they are happy. None of that relies upon a manager with a big reputation

Generally I agree with you. But this in the context of a potential upheaval of a system which is currently working well. So that is more my fear, and don't get me wrong I fully accept there are no guarantees if we did get a Hiddink or similar big name manager in.
