some interesting comments about LVG, Cruyff and Wenger from Bergkamps book................
BWiKY6tCIAA3_94.jpg

So Bergkamp worships Cruyff as most dutch footballers do, thinks Wenger is great because they were successful together and presumably had a falling out with LVG at some stage so doesn't rate him? Anything actually objective or meaningful to go on beyond some ramblings of an ex-pro?

rSol doesn't like Deadwood at all - calling him manipulative and scheming - does that opinion hold equal validity?

Best football book I've ever read hands down. Gives a real insight into how he thinks on the pitch and how he views the game.
The format really makes it too, its an almost 300 page back and forth interview with him as opposed the traditional ghost writer as narrator bull****.

And Bergkamp rates Van Gaal. But his preferred working methodology is different than his. It was Van Gaal's idea at Ajax to move Bergkamp from being an okay winger to being a shadow striker. Bergkamp knows he has a huge debt to Van Gaal.

Not the premier league, there is an irrefutable correlation between spending and position.

yes, but there can be occasions where the right manager with the right players can simply click and it can be enough to produce a surprise or two. Chelsea and Emirates Marketing Project have far bigger resources than Liverpool, have spent way more, but Liverpool are in with a realistic chance of winning the title this season. It can work in reverse too. Look at Utd who won the title with Ferguson with this group of players but Moyes hasnt had the same influence.

Arsenal have been punching significantly above their financial weight for nearly 20 years because they have a structure and management team who are smarter than everyone else.

Swansea and Southampton do the same at a lower level.

On a European level Ajax, Dortmund, Bremen, Seville, Porto, Lecce, St Etienne etc. have all had success against far better resourced sides operating this way.

the right guy can make a club take the next step no doubt, sadly we are quite a ways off, even Jose couldn't win the league with Spurs imo

Glad to see som Manu success last night actually. Makes it more likely Moyes will stay - as it looks now, we will be the biggest PL club looking for a new manager this summer.

LVG will believe he can win the PL, and with pretty much our current squad. He has that much faith in his abilities.

Nothing will give greater pleasure than beating Mourinho with one hand tied behind his back (i.e. our resource limitations).

I admire your conviction, other than AZ he coached teams that were pretty much "the best in their league" and at AZ he was given time (4 seasons if I remember rightly) before winning anything. Will Spurs, Levy or the fans give him that amount of time?

Also if not LVG then who else?

I think its gonna to be either Frank De Boer or LVG. I was really impressed with Benfica maybe Jorge Jesus with Tim has the Technical Director, they seem to get on like a house on fire!!! I heard Jorge Jesus always gets the best out of players, and he has done well at Benfica

I take your point but in a couple of the cases this has largely been due to differences in work permit rules..... For example Seville and Porto are able to bring in young talented South American players who would fail to get a work permit in the UK.

Also - do you feel that Southampton are really punching that much above their weight? Ditto Arsenal - they have had the 2nd to 4th highest turnover and wage bill in the league for a number of years now.

And he managed to get his team to score from 2 set pieces against us...in one game! We're lucky if we score from 2 indirect set pieces a season.

Yes, although how attractive we'll be given where we are likely to finish (the way things are going at present, I can see us finishing 6th or 7th) and the consequential lack of european (let alone champions league) football, and also given our sacking record over the last 10 years, i'm far from convinced that we'll attract anyone decent.
.
This was the best chance for some time to secure a top 4 spot and we've blown it. Neither Liverpool nor Arsen*l have a better squad, but both have better management than we have had.
Liverpool are exactly where we were a while ago, but despite Rogers not getting anything from them last season they stuck with him and now he's looking likely to finish 3rd and possibly higher. As a consequence they'll keep their best player again, sign a couple of new centre backs and cement their place in the top 4. That'll leave us fighting with United and Arsenal next season for 4th. Given United will probably be in the Europa and that the winners will get a CL space the following year, 4th place in the Prem might well not result in a CL place in any event.
We've f*cked this up in an epic way I'm afraid.

We've been punching above our weight for a while too. I think that taking a step up to regularly qualifying for the Champions League is a big ask of any incoming manager, let alone winning the title.

Our biggest hope of breaking through the glass ceiling is UEFA enforcing financial fair play and that this levels the playing field a little but this hope may be forlorn.

I wouldn't put money on that personally. I think he'll still want to leave if Madrid or someone come in.

..not related to your post btw, but it annoys me when people compare the Bale and Suarez situations as well. If someone had offered them £100M for Suarez they would have accepted it no question, in the same way that we would have never accepted £40M & 1p from anyone for Bale. (I'm a bit late with that rant but someone brought it up at work the other day - how we should have done what Liverpool did)

Punching above our weight or not this club (from directors to fans) has been obsessed with the Champions League.

The only thing you should ever obsess over in football is being the best, nothing else.

No lecturer, no essay, just that.

Maybe because a lot of people believe that the need for fourth precedes realistically competing for titles etc. This season however Liverpool have proved otherwise

I've been thinking more and more about this as the season comes to an end.

I want us to be as professional as possible this summer. I want us to do our business early. I want the new manager to have as much time as possible to work with the players who aren't going to the WC during that time and who has the rest of the summer to work with those that did.

If we're going to look to bring in a manager who is managing in the world cup (LVG)...does the fact that he potentially can't take up the job until mid July make this slightly more of a problem?

After talking for a long time about how we need a set system to compete with other clubs and for our new signings to settle in properly, what does this mean for LVG if he only has a month to do so before the season starts?

yes it is a problem, but i don't think it should have too much of a baring on who we look to appoint. after all the job should be a long term role (lol) would be silly to write people off because of a month or so

If Sherwood can get us five or six wins out of the last seven games, there's an argument to be made for him staying. If not, then please bring in a disciplinarian who's won all there is to be won as early as possible this summer. Rafa (if he's available, he's my top choice), LvG, or A.N.Other, it doesn't matter as long as the coach is given the time he needs to start molding the team he wants from back to front. And please, Daniel, if the new manager (Sherwood or someone else) wants a particular player particularly badly, don't be stingy and buy him a second-grade substitute. If Rafa wants Insigne, make it priority numbers one, two and three to get him. If LvG wants to bring Daley Blind in with him, provide him with the funds to do so, no questions asked. If Tim, bless his soul, wants Clyne or Lallana or someone similar, spare no efforts.

A painful lesson was dished out to us with our failure to sign Moutinho last year. Hopefully we've learnt that lesson well.
