Number may not be 100% correct, but he spent loads and despite a few good signings, didn't really get value for the money. Far too much dross that barely played or just wasn't good enough.

****ing hell this has put me off completely. Babel, Keane and Aquilani. And this was 2007,8 and 9 to spend that kind of money. Scary stuff
gone off him completely

I was starting to warm to him but just got flashbacks of how much I used to hate watching Liverpool back then, especially watching Dirk Kuyt as a left winger and feeling so relieved that I wasn't a Liverpool supporter

FDB for me. Go sign him and his coaching team ASAP. He won't be f ucked off by Levy. Thats all bollox. He clearly wants the job.

Yeah, having to watch them win a load of trophies, hard times. Thank GHod we avoided that so absolutely.

Personally I don't like Benitez. I don't think he would be a long term success here. Just another one or two year appointment before things sour.

FDB first and foremost. Felix Magath could also be a good option.

I would have Poch the reason being that I thin the likes of FdB and Poch would try to build 'dynasty's' whereas Benny would build a team for the here and now... he actually reminds me of Mourinho. Im not disregarding Bennys success it is undoubted but it all depends on the type of strategy you want a Manager to implement and achieve. Im assuming it is a loner term one in which case in my view its FdB after all he knows what it is about with his experience at Ajax as a player and Manager.

Fair enough. I'd actually feel more comfortable of a long term stewardship under Benitez. I mean, from tottenham where would he realistically go? can't see real or barca moving for him, if he was to move to us it would be evidence of him preferring england to italy (ruling out juve, ac milan etc). he said himself he wouldn't go to united. i think he could be a good long term appointment.

I'd have more concern about FdB leaving if he had success at spurs than i would benitez.

If we dont start talking to him the day after the Villa match I will be disappointed. As has been suggested, we need to get this sorted sooner than later.
The players off to the WC know the score before they leave for their countries training camps. Incoming targets know who they will be play for, and from a clubs POV an early appointment might get a few extra people renewing their memberships on the strength of a good appointment

Come on Danny boy, get your negotiating hat out of the cupboard ready for next Monday

Neil Lennon beat his Ajax side, why aren't we in for him?

who knows

I think the next guy that comes in need to have something irrefutable about him...something that makes him special and set apart from other candidates.

right now i have seen ajax play a few times on the telly and i dont think i was the least bit impressed by them....infact a couple of those games i saw they were tactically out manouvered and in one european game they were played completely off the park

people here are so eager to replace sherwood "just because .." but its better to get an increase in performance through chemistry than to constantly keep chopping and changing philosophies. I think we need to wait for a better / good option to come available before we completely reshape the team

If we get two good years from any manager we've done well.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing.

At the time Babel was being bigged up as the next Henry, Keane banged in endless amounts of goals the season before and Aquilani was very highly rated.

Same here, it's the possession game, it kills me. I love watching sides rip through posession sides at pace, gives me a warm feeling inside.

no hindsight needed at all. I knew all 3 would flop. and I'm no millionaire football manager

Has asked this a few times on this thread but not had a convincing answer - why does anyone think Benitez will leave Napoli for us? He's just guided them to third in Serie A and will therefore manage them in teh CL next year. We're in the Europa and he'll inevitably need to spend a year or two tinkering with our squad to get it how he wants it. Additionally, whilst Napoli have confortably finished 3rd, he knows that on joining us he'd be competing for a top 4 spot with three clubs who we cant come close to matching financially (Man U, Cheatski, Man C) yet he'll be expected to deliver 4th despite competition from Liverpool, **** and Everton. I just cant see why on earth he would leave them

Phil Thompson says Benitez would leave to join us.
