Next Manager?

So everyone and their mothers all said

Maybe its only the fans who want the rebuild and Levy wants the next manager to get the best out of this squad?
This wouldn't shock me. Levy has rarely seen things the way the fans do. He might well have an alternative view on how good the squad is.

Absolutely. This rebuild that everyone seems to be talking about comes from where exactly? How many of our squad could be described as too old or past it? Admittedly some are here too long and/or aren’t good enough.
But we’ve spent a lot on possibly very good players such as Lo Celso, NDombele, Reguilon and Bergwijn and no surprise if Levy/Hitchen want a coach that’ll get them to live up to their potential.

Which means all the ITKs have jacked in as the natives finally saw through the constant rubbish that they post.
They were all changing their avatars to Conte pics on Thursday night then all started crying Friday night.

These are the points we should be worried about, stuff that's beyond reasonable doubt to have actually happened - no guess work, no leaps in logic, no conspiracy etc

Levy set his stall out with a direct message regarding the type of manager we were looking to appoint - it followed the names that we were being linked heavily with and all but confirmed by the Ally Gold crowd, Nagelsmann, ETH, Poch - we then target a manager who appears to be the opposite of that - so where's the plan there? That's a fair complaint and one i have myself - although more than a few people have been at pains to tell us that Conte would be a fantastic appointment, so who knows?

Mate…I’m happy to dial back on the season ticket stuff but I don’t think your head in the sand is any better than my tin foil hat.

You are absolutely certain our owners don’t enjoy using the media to boost their own reputation with the fans in a way that gets them a tonne of positive coverage for free. And I think that’s naive. It’s not guesswork. They employ a senior PR person on the executive team at the club, and we have people saying ‘Levy doesn’t care what the fans think’.

No problem with us talking to Conte and sounding him out. I would actually not be too concerned about the DNA point if someone like him became available because he’s a proven winner and I would have thought we could just about get there to back him. But I absolutely have a problem with continually being taken for a ride by the club, in some misguided attempt to con people into thinking they are more ambitious than they actually are. And whether you agree with me or not, a significant proportion of the fan base are now thinking on very similar lines. How ENIC respond to that, when owners across the top clubs after the ESL episode are all trying to figure ways to keep the pressure off of them and keep fans onside, is an interesting story. Your complete certainty that these guys are benevolent actors who don’t see any benefit in shifting perceptions of their ownership in the media, even though they employ a senior PR person in the executive team, is just misguided IMO.

Am i? I don't recall making such a statement- I've questioned the specific idea that publicly chasing Conte/Poch was undertaken solely for a PR push...

I don't know that we need a rebus per se, but we do need to clear the dead wood. There is far too much of it clogging up the squad.

Sissoko, Winks, Lamela, Dier, Sanchez, Davies and Hart are all players than can be let go with no discernable harm to the squad.

Just the freshness alone of not having those faces around will feel like a rebuild.

To be clear, I don’t think anyone has an issue with trying to get them. They have an issue with how those stories were pumped from the Spurs side, only for them to fall down for entirely predictable reasons.

That suggests PR opportunism was a big part of it. Particularly when we don’t have any leaks coming from the club unless we really want them to.

No it doesn't, it suggests like with most things over the last few years the club gives confirmation to the likes of Ally Gold on open rumours that have legs - as someone else earlier in the thread showed, the early reports from these guys was we were indeed speaking to them, no more - fans got whipped in to a frenzy over everything that came after.

As i keep telling you there is no positive press from us talking to elite managers and ending up appointing chumps like Southgate or Martinez

Pumped by both sides

Yeah, you’d think that wouldn’t you? Which begs the question as to why it was allowed to play out that publicly. It’s either stupidity or cynicism.

I still don’t understand why, if your version of them just innocently confirming rumours that have legs - to the three most prominent Spurs correspondents plus a guy from one of the nationals all at the same time - is correct, why they couldn’t have just said ‘we’re talking to a number of potential candidates, and are running a thorough process as we have done since April. Conte is a great manager but we don’t want to comment on individuals at this stage.’

Why not just say that? What was the benefit to briefing Conte as the clear front runner?

Afaia the athletic first said that we were speaking to him and not much more else, which AG & co 'confirmed' it wasn't until the usual gossiip crowd got hold of the story that things escalated

Where is the positive press from us speaking to, but not appointing Conte?

Sorry but how do you know spurs said to anyone conte was the clear front runner? Media over dramatise everything. It's their job.

If these reports wind you up so much stop reading them. Many of us read them with a pinch of salt and if it doesn't come off fair enough. How many years have you been into football? Every transfer window it's the same, club gets linked to player/manager xyz. The media build it up because it sells papers, majority don't come off. This happens for every club. If you can't handle the dissapointment of it not coming off stop reading the stories or spending all day in new manager/transfer threads. Because many wont come off.

You think there aren't barca fans out there now crying because wijnaldum is going to psg instead of them. Probably moaning saying but why was the club doing a pr spin saying we were signing him blah blah, season ticket blah blah...
Only one team can buy grealish so either city or utd fans will be crying into their beer.

Sure. But I don’t support Conte, I support Spurs. So I’m more interested in the role they played in getting this all so badly wrong.
Have they got it wrong?
I mean that’s tried to do a deal but I didn’t work out as we couldn’t meet his demands
I’m glad as it means we haven’t panicked to keep fans happy and we will get a manager in who cab and will work within the constraints

Just to be clear, I’m not a kid that needs to learn not to ‘believe everything you read.’

I’m making a specific point about the club’s use of the press and PR to create the impression that they are more ambitious than they actually are. I think it’s a repeated pattern from our owners because it benefits them, and it’s free.

And I wouldn’t care so much, because I agree that all clubs do it, all clubs play the game and benefit from links from time to time. But our club is in the quite unique position in this country of repeatedly being linked with players or coaches that we know our above our station, and where I don’t think there is ever a realistic possibility of getting it done. To waste a week talking to Conte and to brief talks were progressing well only for it to fall down to entirely predictable reasons looks completely amateurish. We do it time and time again. It’s worse because it’s a false impression. Other clubs actually do follow through. We have so many examples of not actually doing it. Which means our use of PR is empty spin, and it feels more manipulative to me.

I think it looks like they are taking the fans for a ride. I think they know exactly how the PR would
work and unfortunately, to @thfcsteff ’s point, it’s either totally amateurish and someone at the club got carried away, or there is something more cynical behind it. You may not want to agree, and may think the club doesn’t try and play the game just like every other institution would, but I’m telling you beyond this forum there is a significant proportion of Spurs fans that feel ENIC can’t be trusted. That is a problem for them, and stuff like this doesn’t help.
