Next Manager?

The fan base has been massively split for over 10 years. But winning solves everything. Poch won enough that some forgot to be angry for a bit.

The situation is worse than when Poch took over. For one thing, we’re seven more years down the line and still haven’t won anything.

Is it fair to say that we're down to our 5th choice?

Nagelmann, Rodgers, Poch, Conte,....

Personally I'd go for Potter rather than ETH
Down to 5th choice? Do you not think it more likely that we had a list of candidates and put out feelers to see who was available and/or open to discussing the position rather than going down a list from 1 to 5? Also Poch and Conte wouldn't have been on any list, that was just an opportunity that came up that was explored.

Whether or not they were on a list, it seems pretty clear that we tried to get them. Ditto nagelsmann. Granted you can debate our level of interest in Rodgers, but it seems pretty clear that we would have hired the others

Probably, if after talks they fit what was wanted, otherwise probably not...

How do you know what Conte wants and how much common ground there is before having discussions?

That he is a manager demanding of his owners, wants the resources to win now, and hasn’t at any point in his career built his reputation around bringing through youth players? It’s pretty frickin obvious.

I would understand us asking the question, maybe saying to him ‘hey man, fancy doing something a bit different, getting behind something for 5 years and leaving a legacy?’. What I don’t understand is having the deal break down after intense briefing that the deal was close, that he is the front runner, over reasons that could have been entirely predicted before picking up the phone.

It suggests either complete stupidity (as well as showing to any other potential manager that we don’t really have a plan and giving them up an uphill battle with the fans because they will be seen as second choice) or it suggests a cynical ploy to boost season ticket sales. But the club doesn’t come out of this well in the slightest.

Or talks weren't that advanced or Conte was leaking the info and using the talks to see if it could get some other clubs to approach him or a million and one other possibilities...

Spurs were leaking it. I don’t think that’s in dispute. Spurs journos connected to the club were reporting that people in the club were updating them.

For sure Conte’s camp were leaking too, but there was a point a couple of nights ago where every Spurs journo, plus Matt Law at the telegraph, came out with the exact same story at the same time. Spurs thought it was in their interest to have the story out there.

It was reported first in Italy, the likes of Gold and a few papers jumped on it after that

That we were in talks with Conte

I can’t make you believe something else, but I’m just saying it’s very very likely that the 3 core Spurs journos plus Matt Law coming out with the story at the same time was very very likely to be a coordinated effort by the club to have that story in front of the people they would want to be reading it - their fans. I can’t prove it of course, but these guys have links, and I would not be surprised they were all told in the same WhatsApp group that the story was solid and they could go with it.

This wasn’t just journos jumping on a story from elsewhere IMO. We have good journalists who have good sources, it is pretty clear that they do. And if we accept that the club was briefing this, questioning why we allowed the story to get so big, when the deal broke down for entirely predictable reasons, are perfectly reasonable. Particularly when it resembles a similar pattern of big leaks on high profile players when a deadline is approaching.

I don't know the reason it broke down, there's loads of possibilities. As I said already, maybe it was Conte stringing Levy along in an effort to see if there was any bigger jobs available. I'm not saying that is what happened but is is just as feasible as anything else that's been spouted on here

That is the problem though there are a lot of fans who believe everything they read and then start bitching when said things fail to happen. S ome fans should take what they read with a pinch of salt and if they do that they will avoid a lot of the bitching when things do not happen.

You also have to know when parties are using channels to blanket "inform" or misinform. Unfortunately this entire scenario is very much what it says on the tin.

3 of the most connected journos to the club come out with the story at exactly the same time. Why do you think that was?

This isn’t fans believing a transfer rumour on a gossip site. This is well connected journalists informing the fans of what is happening. It really isn’t the fans fault that they read and believed the story, given the reason the story was out there was due to the club.

The lengths people will go to absolve the club of any culpability on anything at all is crazy to me. It’s ok to admit they are humans with good points and bad points, and the likelihood of using the resources available to them just like any other institution.

There is a lot of rubbish. My issue is when that rubbish is being circulated by some within the club.

The biggest problem is that most of the rubbish is not coming from within the club. The sad thing imo is that there are a lot of folks who SEEM to believe everything they read and then scream and bitch when it does not happen.
