Manager Sack Watch

I think it was his ego that made him take that job actually. He didn't see failure as an outcome, but that's exactly what happened. The job was too big for him and he wasn't prepared for it.

I think his mate owning the club had something to do with it too

there are obviously examples of ex players being fast tracked in managerial posts before they are ready but Neville has at least done his homework

His brother had been there on the coaching staff on a while, so it is not as if there was no connection. I believe that he had turned down PL jobs before, so it is not as if he jumped at the first job he was offered.

That is true and there were connections to the club, but it was a step way too far for a first time manager. Even if my best mate owns a huge company he's not going to get me to run it unless I am qualified. It is no different at a football club. Neville thought he could handle it but he couldn't, on any level, and now I doubt we'll see him back in management.

Valencia are a bit of a circus right now though and were poor in the league before and after his time there, so not sure how much could be attributed to Neville - if he had genuine intentions to get in to management then i dont see his time in Spain preventing that from happening

It was undoubtedly a tough gig but I am not convinced that he was any less qualified that any other recently retired player taking a top level job.

It's hardly unusual for the backroom staff to move on when the manager goes. We'd be writing off a lot of good coaches, if that is our barometer of failure.

So we wont count that one then . He is not the first good player to fail at management and he will probably not be the last. They all usually talk a good game and its no surprise that Klopp has the opinion he has of him.

I just think that it is a bit early to judge whether he is any good or not. Klopp's assessment of him probably has more to do with currying favour with Liverpool fans than an honest assessment of his coaching credentials.

I disagree, Klopp took offense to what Neville had been spouting about his keeper and pointed out that he had failed as a manager so why should we take everything Neville says as gospel. And we all know fans raved about him as a pundit before he made the move into the real world chair.

He may not be any more qualified than a former pro but that is my point really. Playing football once still makes him unqualified for that job in my opinion.

He'd been taking his badges and had worked as an assistant to a highly experienced coach. I think that makes him better qualified than many but it was still, obviously, a big step up.

I don't think that Neville has ever claimed that punditry and coaching/management require the same skill set. He's a decent pundit and certainly better than most.

Out of interest, do you think that your best coaching was done in your first six months and that you didn't get any better or learn anything new after that?

Klopp was defending his player and playing up to the fans. It's part of his job.

he has the pro license, he'd been a senior coach for years and an assistant manager previously

I don't think it was any different to when Mourinho took the Benfica job, he was certainly more experienced than Guardiola when he took over Barca and Zidane at Madrid, who both won European Cups soon after

it didn't work out at a club with longstanding problems, it shouldn't be the death knell of his career

(1) I never said he did.

(2) You never stop learning and obviously the more you do the better you should get.

(3) I disagree with that as i said before.

I guess you are also damned if you do and damned if you don't, Neville took on Valencia and received criticism for failing, Giggs turns down Swansea and is criticised for not having a go

...and then promptly dropped the keeper that Neville had criticised

Klopp went publicly simple jack the moment he got there, I doubt there is much correlation between what he says to the press and what he thinks in private

if he wants to stay in the job keeping the ego of the fans inflated is more important than results

Agreed.
He'll probably turn up to a press conference in a Beatles t-shirt next.

Re. Neville, I'd say if he took on another job and did really badly, then he only talks a good game. But Valencia are a bit of a mess, both before and after his tenure.

The club and manager have to be a fit. Leeds didn't fit Clough, Forest did.
