Eric Dier

He'll only be able to agree a pre-contract with an overseas team in January. He is very unlikely to have interest from the few clubs in Europe that pay a higher wage than THFC so he either accepts a (likely) low value contract in January or he dares to wait it out the end of the season, hoping to get a PL club then. If he does that having not played a single competitive game of football for a year then I can't see him getting any decent offers. Even now he could probably only move to a Fulham type level club. Who would want him at his age having had no football for a year?

Someone said it earlier

- He's in the same place as Maguire, his next club is going to be a step down, he likely won't get the same wages and he simply isn't as good as he sees himself. He needs to come to terms with it ..

They don't need to pay a higher wage than tottenham. They just have to be able to pay a higher wage than what he is being offered now. As he'll be on a free, it's not that mjch of a stretch to think he could earn more.
I don't see a European team offering him much at all. His only hope of earning a decent wage is a move to the PL or perhaps to an ambitious championship club. He is only guaranteed to be able to make that move on a free at the end of the season. Him not playing for a whole year is likely to reduce the clubs who would want to take him.

I don't think it is in Dier's interests to refuse a loan move now. I think the only way he refuses a loan move is if he thinks him staying here will result in him getting a squad number and then likely a few games at Spurs as injuries happen. That's why I think it is essential for the club to tell him he won't be getting a place in the squad now and won't be training with the first team either.

I'm sure he'd love a loan move now. Would tottenham take it though? You might aswell just let him leave on a free now.

I don't see the issue with him getting games if injuries mean we need him. He's obviously not a starter, and I'm sure he realises that, but he's ok to have as a squad player.

The issue is ange wants to bring in someone more suited. To do that we have to shift some.
Yes, but I meant if he isn't moving and is seeing out his contract, what is the point in not having him in the squad in case we do run into injuries, it makes zero sense.

Agree. Although it would take one of the non hg slots. At the moment our squad is too big. Players will be out of the door one way or the other. Because we can't give them all a place.

Mostly agree.... Though we don't actually 'have to shift some'. We just choose to operate that way. I still think that if we signed another centre back then it would make the likes of Dier more likely to accept a move elsewhere. At present he still probably holds out expectation that he'll end up playing this season.

This is the exact reason that Dier will choose to stay. There is nothing for him to lose. If he suddenly isn't getting the option of any games then I think far more likely he would accept a move elsewhere (even if just a loan).

He's not guaranteed any games, he's relying on players getting injured. We don't have any Europe so there won't be much rotation, we could be lucky with injuries and he only ends up getting a handful of games or less.
So there is plenty for him to lose if he wants game time.

Yes but odds are that Romero, Ven der Ven and Sanchez will all have injuries and/or suspensions. I suspect they also may get the odd rest in the domestic cups. Dier knows that with the traditional way we operate (sell to buy) he's likely to get a squad number by sticking around. We need to make clear we're no longer operating that way and he's welcome to find a move away. Of course he is also welcome to choose to run down his contract but, if he does, it absolutely 100% will mean zero games and training with the youths.

Great idea to stick a senior player in with the kids and leave us short if we do get injuries. And that's without even going into it being a disgusting way to treat a player with close to 10 years here.

We have over 30 players over 21 years old. We can have 25 in the squad. You think we should buy more and hope the others decide to leave? What happens if they decide 'nah, i'm good'?

That may have to wait until next summer. This is a process over a few seasons.
We basically have a half new squad:
Vic, VDV, Udogie, Solomon, Madds, even Richi, Sarr, Bissouma hasn't really played much.
Porro only half a season.
Suddenly the likes of Royal, Romero, Skipp and Kulu are almost veterans in the squad!
Davies and Son aside, not many of the players you'd expect to play much have been here more than 2 years. Sanchez being the anomaly.

Postecoglu doesn't seem to agree. Allegedly he wants 1 more cb.

I was talking more about it being logistically possible - IE having to shift players. Even something like Doer leaving on a free next season takes him off the wage books, whereas right now it's time to get him a new club and negotiate an incoming. Hopefully it's possible. But it's tricky.

Equally EPL managers only tend to last about 11 months on average. So he could end up finishing the season, captaining the side under Thomas Frank
