Eric Dier

The thing that baffles me is that even until relatively recently you will see fans lauding his passing ability and general ability on the ball. He's not the worst CB I've ever seen, but particularly in the modern era there's absolutely nothing special about his ability on the ball. He's actually quite poor and his passing is typically bloody awful.

He's garnered a very privileged position amongst our fan base I'm just not really sure why.

I'll repeat he's by no means the worst CB I've seen at Spurs but he's weirdly been put on some pedal stool above the likes of Sanchez and I just don't see it. They are equally poor.

I’ve not seen any lauding his passing
His right foot passing is ok
His left door is Hugo esque
Floaters that get cut out long before the man gets near them

You've missed some whoppers. I even remember someone arguing with me that his long range passing was better than Toby's. [emoji1787]

His right foot is not even ok, anything over 5 yards is typically a hospital pass or just doesn't get to his target. He needs to keep it much more simple.

His pass rate with his right is decent
You can’t keep anything simple in that system though as it’s designed it go backwards to go forwards. It just doesn’t work with these players and it worked in Italy because teams there didn’t press (they do now)
We have to go to a back 4 asap under a new guy

Why can't you just say that he is guff, he's been at it since the end of pochettino... first it was his injuries then it was stability, then it was formation ... his passing is fed decent with his right foot? For a Premier league player you would expect more than just that

Because I’ve seen him play well
Like others
I’ve also seen him play bad
Like others
We need a better player in this summer for sure

Seen him play really well when he burst on to the scene and then flounder towards the end of the pochettino era.

So essentially you are saying he is inconsistent. When he plays well he looks decent, when he usually plays he looks bird muck. Time to go.

No
I’ve seen him play well many times
Ok many times
And also poorly
That’s like a LOT of our players
He needs to go for his own career and we need upgrades

the worst player in our shirt today was Hugo… fudging horrendous
Flapped at some crosses
Fell over the line for their first goal because he panicked and moved the wrong way first
And kicks every ball like it’s a balloon

IMO Dier is midtable Defender always has been.
Doesn't read the game well, and panic tackles as a result.
Poch made him into a system fitting midfielder which worked whilst he was young and had some mobility, but once he got a bit older and developed more bulk the mobility naturally went and he couldn't play that role in midfield he needed to move back into defence where he he is an average premiership Defender. He's reading of the game is shocking and as you get older that's supposed to improve if you want to play at the highest level. He would do really well at a midtable premier league club as he doesn't need to be consistent week in week out. He needs to leave Spurs and be replaced with a more cleverer, more mobile CB.

Dier as we know is not a natural defender. He doesn't have the instinct to capitalise on key moments in the game. He's OK when average happens. But he seldom comes up with anything special. He is cheap and English and I belive that's why he stays in the team.

Bad game again unfortunately

Slows the play down, his long passes miss more than they land, directly at fault for the first ruled out goal.

Upgrade needed (nothing we didn't know)

Well to say his passing was as good as Toby is silly at best for sure, but just as silly ( imo) is saying his passing is typically a hospital pass is just wrong. imo. But i agree we need to look for bringing in a better partner to play with Romero.

So just say it, don't sit on the fence .
. Eric Dier is simply just not good enough. He may get targeted at times but on the whole it's usually deserved. Not that I like any spurs player to fail ... ever.

Well its all about opinons and i believe he has got a lot of unfair slagging from some, however if we are able to get better then fair enough ( the same for all our players). Someone at the game suggested Dunk would be a good buy for us ( after i picked myself of the floor laughing) i have no problem replacing any player really if we can get better.

I think your assessment of Dier is very fair tbh and mirrors my own. Solid pro and not the worst CB we’ve had and no doubt we will sign worse, but there’s a small minority on here who overpraise him and won’t ever admit when he plays badly and it’s honestly quite baffling as he’s been nothing more than a 6.5 out of 10 player consistently over his Spurs career. People point to the fact that multiple managers pick him but that’s more a failure of the club rather than a reflection of Dier really earning in on merit. I mean we don’t have much better but that’s because we haven’t adequately replaced the Belgians since they left which is damming. I hope we don’t renew his contract and we either sell him or he runs his contract down and signs for another club. I’ll applaud him when he comes back and plays against us but I’ve always found his popularity puzzling to say the least. More of a reflection of how far we have fallen more than anything.
