I think he hides…. He often can be found nowhere near a single one of the opposition players.
He never hides
If he did he wouldn’t make some of the mistakes he makes
He is a weak link i agree
By that definition, PEH hid even more last night.
Poor quality in front of them and stupid tactics asking them to play it around at the back. None of the players we have at the back suit that.We were ok till the goal then as soon as we scored PEH, Skipp, Perisic, Porro, Son and Kane all went into brain fart mode, not one of them showed any skill or ability to hold the ball for longer than a second and we just got over run.
Dier is far from the player I want as a starting Centre Back but if the players in front of you don't and can't accept the ball in dangerous situations to take pressure off you are just going to be inviting wave and wave of attack and thats exactly what happened post goal and I would argue all CBS would struggle with runners from centre and the wing for 15 mins +
Just look at the goal FFS, not one player infront of the back 4 took ownership and tracked Keane, as a CB he would not be the hardest player to show to a side or brain scramble into a pass or a mistake, compare that to their midfield who crowded out Romero when he went on that later run, chalk and cheese.
Just to repeat, Dier is not great but he and the rest of the defence were hung to dry again with the lack of quality infront of them

We all know how poor Lloris kicking is. Dier's passing is actually ok, but he's not quick enough to play it under pressure. Romero can be too lax and dawdle on the ball at times, he almost got caught in our box a couple of times and was very lucky.
Playing with 10 men, Everton were still pressing high so there was space in behind but we still knocked it around at the back and then lost it in our defensive third. Stupid beyond belief.
That’s how I see itAgreed.
I think some people have a different definition of 'hiding'...given his recent form, there's a fine argument for hoping he'd hide more?

Typically a team playing with 2 centre backs will use one of the central midfielders to shield them. When playing with 3 centre backs there should be far less need for their to also be a shield from a midfield player, that 'shielding' player already exists as one of those 3 CBs. If we want to play with 3 centre backs and also have one of the central midfielders to shield them, then we'd be giving up the midfield even more than we do already.Dier's long-range passing can be hit or miss. He did have a few really good passes out to the wings, but he also has a few passes straight into the midfield opposition. Romero is comfortable playing it out from the back, although that one situation where Lloris put him under a lot of pressure almost made me do a poop in my pants. Romero then fed it to Dier who then launched it straight back to Everton.
Honestly, anyone who's content with Dier is content with mediocrity and is acknowledging that they're fine with the team struggling against bottom-table teams. Not to single him out as I think there are a few others guilty of this as well like PEH. I just don't see him defend proactively. He obviously does some decent things like cutting out passes but it's too little. Having that extra man in defense allows for the responsibility to be spread out over more players, thus each player has the excuse to think "the guy next to me can handle that." FWIW, PEH is more guilty than Dier generally because it is true that our defenders aren't being shielded that well, although that is perhaps the mentality again of "we have three CBs, one of them can handle it."
Skipp didn't have a great game either, not to throw only Dier and PEH under the bus. The difference is that Skipp is young and hopefully he has the right mentality to keep improving himself. I don't see that attribute in PEH who thinks he's one of the top-5 midfielders in the world. It's like how Messi only works hard selectively, otherwise just walking around having a stroll. The coaches need to stamp this sort of mentality out, because even "older" players should be able to keep improving on the mental aspect of the game even when they've peaked physically.

Assume you are a Romero fan boy? That guy had an absolute mare on the ball last night, constantly misplacing passes and passing his team mates inti trouble. We were ok till the goal then as soon as we scored PEH, Skipp, Perisic, Porro, Son and Kane all went into brain fart mode, not one of them showed any skill or ability to hold the ball for longer than a second and we just got over run.

Agreed and at the very least, midfielders in any system should track back (especially if they're the one who gave the ball away in the first place), at the very least to contain a bit.Typically a team playing with 2 centre backs will use one of the central midfielders to shield them. Our issue is they track back too far and never go outAgreed and at the very least, midfielders in any system should track back (especially if they're the one who gave the ball away in the first place), at the very least to contain a bit.
I rate him but where have I said in that post that he played well?Assume you are a Romero fan boy? That guy had an absolute mare on the ball last night, constantly misplacing passes and passing his team mates inti trouble.
I'd take Dunk in place of Dier in a heartbeat
The thing that baffles me is that even until relatively recently you will see fans lauding his passing ability and general ability on the ball. He's not the worst CB I've ever seen, but particularly in the modern era there's absolutely nothing special about his ability on the ball. He's actually quite poor and his passing is typically bloody awful.Just sat through another half of this guy being unable to play football. He is just so poor on the ball.
Sounded like the Park Lane end were starting to get on his back towards the end of the half.
