Eric Dier

It’s pretty clear to me that it comes from the man at the top. The managers are told that qualifying for the CL is the be all and end all. I think this was proven when Mourinho was sacked in the week of the League Cup final because he was going to rest players for the midweek PL game to give the best possible chance of winning the League Cup at the weekend.

thats conjecture at this point

They don't have to be a fine tuned unit to win matches like last night. They do have put in a bit of effort.

I don’t necessarily think it’s effort or lack of, i think it’s more like ‘fight’ you have to fight to earn the right to play your game, last night Sheffield outfought us And we lost. Within 20 or so minutes I knew we would get done.

what Conte calls ‘suffering’ and Poch used to call bravery

I’d bet my house him and Davies are still starting the majority of games next season. Both can stay as backups but shouldn’t be starting unless it’s for rotation and fitness reasons. Get another CB to play alongside Romero and we will be much stronger for it.

The problem is that we take too long to buy quality replacements and by the time we are OK at the back with better keeper, CBs etc... We might need to overhaul some other part of the team.

I've watched him closely against Forest and Soton.
Honestly , there's so many faults with his game. In too tired and fed up with the whole team / club to bother listing them but he's simply nowhere near good enough.e
He doesn't have the aggression required , he doesn't engage the opposition , he's very slow with the turning circle of an oil tanker , he doesn't mark or position himself correctly. He's weak in the air for his size and height. I knew it , I've started now. I will leave it at that.
Just to say , an upgrade is essential.

Have not hated a spurs player as much as I hate Dier in a very long time.

Utter rubbish, we have had worse players but none that seem so arrogant in their belief they are a good player. I find him detestable.

That's a ridiculous post. Dier has his faults as a player but I've never seen an interview with the guy where he comes across as arrogant. In fact, he comes across as a very well-rounded and grounded individual for a guy who has lived the life he has.

Your post is full of projection.

As a fanbase we really to spend awful lot of time stating the obvious.

Dier needs upgrading, we all know that.

The issue is tactics should cover for weaknesses not expose them.

You’re right but I think to be fair to Conte, his tactics do play to Dier’s strengths and hide his weaknesses as best they can be hidden. Playing in a 3, Dier is rarely asked to defend 1 v 1 or come out to close a player. He can sit in, direct the others and get blocks in when required.

Conte's tactics also invite pressure on a defense that outside of Romero is not very press resistant. An extra man in midfield when you know the opposition is going to play 4 or 5 there (to your two) wouldn't be a bad idea either.

The top sides/managers over the last few years aren't always about brilliant defensive units but they rely heavily on the fact that if you make the opposition think about your attacking more than theirs, it makes your job of defending easier. With our front line, that's what we should be doing.

I agree, Dier brainfart there.
He doesn't have the aggressive CB instinct to go man-on-man with the closest threat.
We will massively improve once we get a reliable, natural CB there.

Unfortunately this is typical of Dier. He tends to try to find ways to get as far from possible from defending against the opponents attacker. The good news is that it needn’t cost more than about £20m to bring in a FAR better centre back than him (there are even a whole bunch of them available on free transfers).

It's a fair point but you look at the teams that do it. Woolwich, Liverpool, Emirates Marketing Project...they also defend with a high line. You couldn't play Dier in a high line. It also increases the chances hugely that he ends up having to defend 1 v 1 and we saw, against Leicester particularly, that he's just not able to do it. There is merit in your point though.

Ignoring his faults and errors for a mo, is he the only person we have that can and does "organise" our defence? not only do we need to upgrade on him in terms of defensive skills we also need a leader and organiser in there, which complicates it a tad I would say.

He was also called one of the worlds best defenders by Conte, which complicates it further. Selfish bloke

Dier struggles to organise himself IMO, let alone others.

You get no argument from me on that but is he the only one in our defence who does that job?

I guess my point is we clearly need to replace and upgrade, but that needs to be a King, VVD type, already experienced and established (in the Prem preferably), than say a 21 year old who looked decent at the World Cup who is going to cost £50-65m.

Add in the unknown element of if we're going to be using a back 4 or 5 next season it feels like it's a massive decision to get right.
