Eric Dier

Overdue congratulations! I’m in a somewhat similar position albeit no children. Got married last year and my wife is always itching to see me when I get home and I wonder what I’m doing schlepping to places like Sheffield on a Wednesday night and Leicester on a weekend when we were seeing family, let alone going to the north London derby and not getting home till half 8 on a Sunday night. I feel us men do need an outlet and while football is great at times, it’s a massive time waster and it eats into family time a little bit too much for me these days.

Thanks mate, congrats/commiserations to you to… been with the mrs long enough now that she’s happy enough to see the back of me for a day were it not for the fact she’s left holding fort with the little one - made it known early doors in the relationship that football was my thing so she respects that - but yeah hard to justify it to myself atm, funny thinking back that my Dad must have been gone most weekends during the football season when I was a young un and to the away European games all the time

Not that it’s all Dier, Sanchez and Davies’s fault, but that kind of sums up why we don’t ever win anything when you don’t replace top CB’s like Toby and Jan. Thinking back to when Poch was manager, is there a single position in the team where we have upgraded or have improved on?
We lost semis with Poch in charge with Jan and Toby too … and cup games against weaker sides because all the managers we have do not respect the cups

I remember Poch rotating heavily in the Europa League too, I think, against Dortmund, before a big league game.

Cheers pal. My mrs couldn’t understand why I love football so much for years, I think she understands it more these days but wouldn’t say she likes it. Doesn’t help that football isn’t a big deal in her family, whereas if my sister married a bloke who was into football she would get it more if that makes sense. I honestly don’t know how married men get away with going to every single game home and away, that’s before you even mention how they swing it with work. With each passing year I’m starting to realise family is more important. I only keep the season ticket through blind hope that we eventually win something again so I can be there to witness it in person and I do enjoy the odd European or domestic away trip.

They really aren’t the issue in these games IMO
3 … 3 shots on target on average in these defeats shows that the problem is we ain’t scoring …

which is odd as we are scoring a lot as a team

I don’t disagree that the forwards weren’t good enough, but most of us recognise that Dier, Davies and Sanchez aren’t good enough regardless of what forwards are on the pitch. Doesn’t help that we’ve spent £60m quid on a non-scoring forward who is more interested in trying to buy free kicks than scoring or creating.

Yep
Poch didnt value the cups either
Maybe it’s set at the top that CL is all that matters
Would make sense but not to me as a fan

I think we also shouldn't ignore that Sheffield rotated heavily tonight, resting players for their league run in too.

Does anyone prioritise the cups, or are they simply wars of attrition where the biggest spenders have more money in the legs to get it done?

Whilst that may be true about the bigger clubs winning trophies because ofresources/freshness, all the top clubs in every league win domestic cups except us. I feel we need to get the monkey off our back and it doesn’t send out a good message when you play a weakened team when we’ve not won anything for 15 years.

who though, its a small pool, and in other leagues they spend closer relatively than we do to the other teams in our league, the PL has more "top clubs" than Spain, Germany, Italy

also, how do we judge a weakened team, we have had two London derbies recently, high tempo games which could have taken a lot mentally and physically, maybe we started our fittest team tonight, we could easily have started the same team as on Sunday and had them be knackered

All the top clubs in England win domestic trophies.

Seems like we are prioritising the game against Wolves on Saturday for some reason when we will probably lose anyway and it’s not like we are going to win the league even if we do win. Obviously I was delighted when we first finished in the top 4 under Arry because we had come so close on more than one occasion but I’m rather apathetic about finishing in the top 4 this season. Unless of course we go on to win the champions league but I honestly don’t see that happening.

I don't think the issue is rotation, I think it's the really poor squad, and the failure to get rid of the weak mental characters....

Think what you like but our history has proven Dier and Sanchez are weak mental characters.

We say this every time a new manager comes in, we hope these are the first to be axed, as we know the previous manager failed by trusting them. But each new manager falls into the same trap.

They are what I call Manager Sackers.

The DOF should see this and ship them out... or we will never break the cycle.

In most industries there are these manager Sackers who can talk themselves into the being the confident of the Manager, but they are Sh*t at their job. Eventually things fail and the manager is sacked or leaves, and ultimately pays for putting their faith in these Manager Sackers....

I think it is rotation. You could have the best squad in the world, but if you are asking players without game time to work as a fine tuned unit with other players lacking game time, then this is what you get. It will affect those players physically and mentally.

The biggest spenders may well win them but we've been knocked out of them this season by two clubs who we really should be beating.
We haven't scored against either Sheffield Utd or Nottingham forest.
And its not just this season, we are not going out to teams with bigger resources than us,that's just become a lazy excuse.

It’s pretty clear to me that it comes from the man at the top. The managers are told that qualifying for the CL is the be all and end all. I think this was proven when Mourinho was sacked in the week of the League Cup final because he was going to rest players for the midweek PL game to give the best possible chance of winning the League Cup at the weekend.

They don't have to be a fine tuned unit to win matches like last night. They do have put in a bit of effort.
