Coronavirus

I’m for the opening up on 21st June but I do think booking a holiday is a bit unwise and premature at this stage. If they closed our borders for the rest of the year but allowed everything else to open up; restaurants, theatres, sporting events etc at full capacity but we can’t go abroad then I’d be support that tbh. As long as I can do everything I want to do in this country with no restrictions then travel can wait for a bit. And I say this as an avid traveller, I’m desperate to go abroad but we should have closed the borders months ago to stop variants coming in.
Reluctantly I agree.
We need other parts of the world to get further ahead in the vaccination and support programs before mixing more - covid is showing it is going through its mutation phase, and it'll settle on a few less serious strains soon (1-2 years?).
But too much mixing just risks exposure to something that causes a bit issue again.
Even the strictest of measures don't stop spread - the data that comes out of the big desert with killer animals over winter is going to be very insightful.

Yep. Getting our brick together with the vaccine program and people adhering to the rules is only one part of the equation. We can still import nasty strains of the virus that can fudge things up regardless of how well our vaccine program is going. I’m not in favour of any more lockdowns as I think we need to live with covid but I don’t see closing the borders as a huge imposition to people.

I agree, even as a travel industry veteran. No point messing about with Amber countries either. Until other countries catch up it's either green or red. Rather get domestic UK back up and running at full tilt than risk that for a few weeks in the sun

You have to say that it would be all well and good shutting borders but if the is another way a thousand people a week were coming in unchecked it would still be a problem. Not maybe the same scale but still.

Best not talk about that though;)

I can't see the government doing away with the Amber list, although I think it would probably be better if they did.
But yes, let's concentrate on getting the UK properly open. Carry on rolling out the vaccine programme. No restrictions on numbers at indoor or outdoor gatherings. Festivals, concerts, sporting events, all with full crowds.
And in the meantime, provide proper support for the overseas travel industry.

Are the illegal migrants that turn up in boats every day tested for COVID or are they tested in France before being sent off with an au revoir ??

What strains are they?

No doubt he paid for his own flight, ticket and hotel !!!

Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove is self-isolating after travelling to Portugal for the Champions League final last week, Robert Jenrick confirms.

Jenrick says Gove is self-isolating and conducting regular tests before returning to the office.

Asked if Gove was “pinged” by the test-and-trace system after flying back from Portugal, Jenrick says he believes that is the case.

“He is going to be tested prior to returning to the workplace,” he adds.

There’s the Indian and nepal variants of delta and kappa as the PC police want us to call them now. There will be more variants. Not saying we shouldn’t open up or go into future lockdowns but they could still cause problems. We’re going to have to live with covid but it won’t be easy. Limiting travel isn’t that hard to do as Australia have closed their borders till mid 2022. Not ideal but I’d settle for being able to do everything I want to do in the UK and no restrictions rather than import more variants.

Yep close the borders and let households roam freely within the U.K.

We can’t have both, holidays are not as important as day to day living plus it is holidaymakers who have spread this pandemic and the variants.

Not everyone that travels is a holidaymaker. I actually came back from China at the start of covid and I assure you it was no holiday.

You still haven't shown us how you know that BAME people didn't follow the rules and how they are worse than people like you who admitted on here that you didn't comply.

Fair enough. You would not be allowed into China right now anyway.

I am referring to holidays, there is obviously a lot of international trade traffic too.

Isn't the vaccine just as effective against those variants?
