Son’s getting slated at the moment for his performance as captain, and I understand why even if I don’t fully agree, but you don’t need the armband to show leadership and pretty much every one of our lads wilted under the lights at Anfield. The three in midfield were particularly disappointing on that score.
This is it for me. The players don't seem to have given up just yet but they did seem overawed by the occasion on Thursday which is hard for the manager to mitigate for in game. It's more a mentality shift that is built over months and years, especially with a young team.

Sunday was another abject performance but the comparative lack of rest showed.

There is a huge amount riding on the next few weeks for Ange. A couple midweeks off with players coming back for big PL games before the EL last 16.

Any mitigation for poor performances is drying up and we will soon see exactly what the manager/squad is made of, which imv will/should dictate Ange's future.

Exactly. It's just a never ending cycle. The more injuries players get, the more likely they are to get another one. Just look at Kane and his ankles. He had to adapt his game to solve that problem.

And what about new signings? Have they got to go through 1 or 2 seasons of injuries until they adapt to Ange's physical demands?

I doubt we will ever have near to a fully fit squad under his tenure whilst he sticks to his methods. The physical demands of the EPL are on a different level to his previous gigs.

Don't disagree with the overall point but Kane is on record as getting a specialist PT to work on his hamstrings which helped him get over his ankle issues: https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnati...h-canadian-physio-ankle-rehabilitation-genius

Let's say Ariola is our top target and he's only available in the summer - then we surely have to wait until then instead of hire say Potter or Southgate now, no? I don't think we should be desperate to just get another head in.

If we could get a decent caretaker we should obviously take it though.
Potters at West Ham now

I still hope we stay with Ange at least to the end of the season and then make the decision then.
Ange in/out, for me, all depends on the alternative person in the hot seat and if we stay away from "serious relegation fears"™️. fF we stay safe, continue with Ange unless a permanent chap who is an upgrade is available. If not, stick with Ange and then replace him at the end of the season.

A couple of games now with full weeks of recovery and training between them.

I want Ange to drill the team on ideal Angeball now. No more adjustments or pragmatism. Press high, play ambitious, invert the full backs.

I get it.

If we do, then it will be about mid March when we find out. We play the 2 Manchester clubs in Feb with Ipswich sandwiched in between. However, it will be the B'mouth and Fulham games that test the tactical theory. We had a tactical style clash with both these teams earlier this season and lost both. Ange was deeply analysed in both for playing the system you talk about. Silva spotted something as early as the 10th minute and just took control of the rest of the game. Iraola used his centre half to get the lead, then waited. By the end of the game, we were chasing and they could have got 2 or 3 more. Let's see if a high press system with fresh legs makes the difference or whether new narratives appear from our manager.

The injury crisis is saving him in my opinion.

There would still be the easy ball over the top where the full back has pushed up

Stil the easy pass into the #10 who can then turn and run at the defence

Still be our turn around a sprint backwards style of defending

Still be my personal favourite, the two men over at the far post.

Nothing before or during this year injury crisis has shown that he can play another way. We would have won more games, but the same deficiencies in the system would still be there. Throughout his tenure we simply give up high percentage chances too easily due to the tactics. Having a shoot off with the opposition and relying on VDV's hamstrings for me is not winning tactics.

What happens if he stays, a handful of players come back and results do slightly improve (nothing amazing, doesn't win the Europa but a fair amount of wins to move up to mid table etc.) It's gonna be a mental summer if he stays as half the fanbase will have now checked out on him

Great post, why have supporters who still believe this guy has got a clue what he is doing?

You want to get relegated? At least we can probably win the Championship.

A quality number 6 would solve a lot of these deficiencies

I have to say I think we need a fairly strong finish to the season for that to happen.

If that happens we should have a stronger squad next season. Not just the summer window, but players like Gray, Bergvall, Moore, hopefully Odobert all stepping up a level as well as Kinsky and Danso - hopefully with Tel as well. That's a rather different starting point compared to the start of this season.

Secondly, assuming the "partly" part of your post and his statement being true and the injury situation this season being also in part due to bad luck, factors outside of Ange that may be rectified... Fewer injuries?

People do also often bring up the points about the intensity of the PL and the demands of playing twice a week in combination with that. Perhaps Ange has learned some things from that, things that most potential new managers would have to learn as well.
What makes you think we will have fewer injuries just out of interest mate? Ange’s teams are infamous for constantly picking up injuries.
