Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Or maybe Abramovic thought AVB was a clueless idiot and got rid of him because it was obvious to those in the club that it wasnt working. They went on to win the CL and FA cup.

Abramovic is no fool. I like the way you suggest he just decided to side with the players as if AVB was wronged. Have you considered that there might have been good reason ? No chairman in their right mind would back a manager that they thought was making big mistakes.

Now we both have no clue either way. But I wont just assume it was all Abramovic's fault. Surely a good manager would get any group of amazing players performing well, even if it didnt suit his system ?

You guys are in cuckoo land if you think AVB is going to get a squad full of perfect players for his system.

The stories at the time of his sacking was that AVB was seen as tactically inept by the first team and board. Also it was reported that AVB cried because only 3 players came to say bye to him. While that makes me feel a bit sorry for him, it sounds a bit worrying that he was able to fall out with his squad so easily.

Abramovic lost his nerve.

He charged AVB with clearing out the old school and rebuilding the team.

This programme of change was always going to be a rocky road on the field.

Abramovic set AVB to the task and promised to back HIM.

Naturally players who had enjoyed far more power than any play should at a club resisted.

At the time when the Owner should be backing the manager to see through this change he backed the players instead.

This is a time when they were in easy reach of fourth, the top four - I imagine - being the minimum requirement for the season. Easy reach despite the amount of change going on, and despite the likes of Lampard, Drogba and Terry making it as difficult as possible, and despite having Owner brought purchases like Torres being forced upon him to use.

So yes, I do think the owner let him down, and yes, I think thats a perfectly reasonable conclusion.

I have at no point said he was blameless or didnt make mistakes, I believe he did - but that doesnt alter the fact promises made to him were not kept.

I dont expect him to just have the perfect squad and be done with it, but I do expect him - while the window is open - to try as much as possible to achieve that.

I believe the more players he has to suit his ideas the better, for him and us.

The stories at the time of his sacking are largely irrelevant to me, history is always written by the victor isnt it?

So far, at Tottenham, I dont see how he has set a foot wrong really. And I am definitely yet to see any of this fabled bad man management or tactical inpetness that so many were worried about post Chelsea.

Loyalty is great but really no one, but AVB and the most deluded spurs fan, can make that argument after Chelsea won the Champions League and FA cup after he was sacked. Most people would say it was the right decision, I'm sure abramovich doesn't feel bad.

Things went wrong at Chelsea last year. Partly AVBs fault, partly the players. At whatever point he was sacked, Chelsea wasn't working. Because the players went on to win the CL - with a HUGE dose of good fortune, it has to be said - their part is forgotten. But if AVB had stayed and Drogba+Lampard+Terry left, it would have been them painted as the guilty party if even just Chelseas league form improved.

Take 2 then for AVB at WHL. Has he learnt his lessons then? Well, it's clear he wants to play his way. He's picked a club where the core playing staff are suited to this. That's already an advantage. He's ditching the squad players who don't suit his style. What about our influential senior pros? King - retired. Modric - going. Bale (I assume), Adebayor - both signed new contracts when they knew he was coming in.

There is no John Terry, Fat Frank or Dogbowl going to be rocking the boat here.

So it's going to be a much purer chance to see the AVB 4-3-3 in action, high line pressing game. You know, the one which won a treble in his first season in Portugal, undefeated in the league, blah blah blah. But it will take time, and that's not going to satisfy the people on here who expect us to WIN every match with every player having a blinder. It might mean 6th this year, maybe a good cup run, I don't know. But probably not that glorious CL place, probably not a trophy. However, building all the time, next year pushing on for CL football, the year after pushing for a title. Will Levy buy that? I think he might, if he sees that AVB is truly building something.
And that's the difference with Chelsea. For them, he wasn't given the chance to build, and they expected success there and then. For us, the expectation is less at the moment, and the foundations are there.

Chicken then why did we get rid of Redknapp if we are not going to get Champs league this season? HR left us with a decent squad, 4-5-4 AVB should be able to better HR or why get rid? You can see why non -spurs people laugh at us. Where's Moonlit Knight when you need him - he would love this argument?

I don't quite think you understand the phrase 'long term'...

And for your information non-spurs people are not 'laughing at us', you only had to look at their forums to see the majority of them understood the decision we took at the time.

Since when has football been about Long term? Surely we need year on year champs league to generate revenues to rebuild our stadium attract and keep top players. How long do you think Ade, Bale and Damiao or whoever we get be willing to wait for us to get into Champs league , 1 2 seasons? Make no mistake AVB will be expected to hit the ground running, which he may do, I certainly hope so as a spurs Fan.

As for the forums I don't know but I'm certain I could find the same number of people who think it is hilarious including most of the footie fans I work and socialise with.

You're contradiciting yourself.

Give it a rest fella - Redknapp is gone and never coming back - get behind the new manager and support the club instead of looking for arguments against him after one game into the season

Since forever. Before being hired the manager talks to the chairman about what? Oh yes, his long term plans for the club.

We don't need CL revenues to build our stadium.

I think they'll be willing to wait two years.

I do not like being called deluded. Particularly when its in a post that bares no relation the the bonded quote it responds to.

If the CL win justifies the decision, then the logic of your argument is that Abramovich made the right call and predicted Messi, Robben and Schweinsteiger would all miss crucial penalties. Some would say he got lucky and I don't think they are all deluded.

Abramovich may have had good reasons, and AVB clearly has to take some of the blame, but was Abramovich's judgement equally sound when sacking Mourinho and Ancelotti?

Arc I don't see the contradiction myself I was a card carrying member of the anti redknapp phalanx. I'm asking the question though we got rid of a relatively sucessful manager to bring in one that fans think may take us back wards before taking us to where we were under redknapp what is the point? perhaps the pro redknapp lot were right. Look I will support this manager after all he is not HR who I despised but this is a forum and I'm intersted in discussion.

Champs league year on year?? We've had it ONCE under Saint Harry....so by your own measure we needed to change?

This joker really thinks Chelsea are a better team after AVB left....the league form says otherwise

Won Champs league and FA cup and now top of the league. By the way I despised "saint Harry." I just want to be clear why he was replaced by AVB. just a discussion.

It seems you've chosen the wromg team matey.....move along

Top of the league after 2 games?!! :) And another how much in spending?? More support than AVB was given...far more.

And if you have closed your eyes to the luckiest run of games in the history of cup football and want to portray that as a designed for success. more fool you.

And you could have success with Chelsea given the money they've spent this summer and before. Di Matteo was sacked by West Brom.....his CV is hardly unblemished.

You're a disgrace IMO....the worst kind of naysayer JCL

You stated there is no such thing as long-term in football then in the very next sentence requested contiuous CL qualification year upon year and consistent stadium investment. To me these aspects cannot be mutually exclusive - hence my comment.
