Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

LOL, cannot even make a glib comment without attack. Never say anything bad about Harry eh? Obviously there was some tactical plan, he was a professional manager at a professional club with ore coaches than fingers on one hand to assist him in such matters (if he listened to them, often, that is)... Let me clarify my comment with some detail, and now I'll be serious. Harry had a plan A. He did NOT ever have a plan B. Still, I don't want a glib, off-the-cuff quip reply to King's initial comment to descend into a session about "the other one" again.

The idea that we had no tactics and never got anything right under Redknapp is just not even worth discussion.

What I would like to see AVB do, that imo would be different from Redknapp is

- Work more on the % side of the game, specifically set pieces, fitness, midfield/strikers attacking the box.
- Having more of a system where the loss of one or two players does not immediately require a completely different style of playing.
- Better use of squad/rotation/subs, either in game or as applies to Cup games

I have already explained the nature of my comment. if you cannot tell the difference between 'not have a plan B' and 'never got anything right (your words, not mine those)' then I'm sorry for you.

To the list of points you'd look for from AVB, let me add a little more detail to points you've made which I wholeheartedly agree with:

*better preparation and awareness of the opposition
*have the sort of bench which can change the shape/pace/outcome of a game via system changes
*improve the training
*improve the tactical awareness of players like Bale and Lennon

Against Arsenal, the first few times we faced them under Harry, he got it tactically perfect.

We conceeded possession in wide areas because we knew they had nothing from those positions. We let them have the ball, at will, until the came into our half. We defended with a very deep line in two solid banks to restrict them to pot shots from range - then when we had the chance Bale and Lennon were immediate counter attacking outlets - often with VDV already hanging on the periphery of our game to join the passes.

Harry showed an excellent approach to these games, thoughtful and betraying real preparation.

Its a shame he didnt that this approach more often, IMO

I think that whilst I was electrified by the 2-1 win in the CL qualifying season and the 3-2 win at scumbury, we would have to admit that we did not outplay them in either game, that the games were very even and that for once we got a bit of luck/a fantastic individual performance or two, when we deserved it.The 2-1 at home a few years ago, in fact, saw Gomes produce two of the finest saves I have seen in nearly 40 years at WHL... aside from the defense, perhaps the best I ever saw us play them under Redders was the 3-3 t home, a brilliant, brilliant game of football.

Anyway, getting back to AVB, I am very very excited by the minimal amount of talking he's done versus the maximum amount of work I know he's currently putting in to researching, and knowing, the club inside out. I expect big, big things!

give me an example of a plan A that harry had and then give me an example of a PLan b that he could or should have had.

infact, an exmaple of an alex ferguson plan B would the good too

edit: LOL.....and you are right , you cant make a comment, use it as a debating point and then when it gets scrutinised , go and call it a glib LOL. Next time to save alot of people the effort of responding to comments which dont have that much sincerity and / or meaning...just put something like *inserts glib* or *glib alert* and we would probably just skip that point entirely

Such a shame African, we always got on so well yet something seems to have happened ever since Harry...ah well, we will find man-love again!!!! ;-) ANYWAY, to take the challenge.
*Burnley away, second leg of the semi-final, 4-4-2, failing miserably, no plan B
*Arsenal away, last season, 4-4-2, we go 2-0 up but are losing the game in midfield and it's only a matter of time before we get taken (something he admitted), no plan B (or to be accurate, no EFFECTIVE plan B)
*Chelski semi-final of the cup, 4-5-1, going OK, some terrible judgments from the ref, we are allowed to fall apart with absolutely nothing coming from the touchline
* Real Madrid away, plan A shot by zealous ref and silly Crouchy, no plan B for this scenario (remember, we did have a similar CL game in Milan, you'd have thought we'd be prepared for this sort of thing after that!)

In response to what he should've done, 4-5-1 at effeminates soon after we went 2 up (been discussed to death), certainly NOT persevere at Madrid with VdV as a lone forward, instead do a Chelski, sit, park the bus in two very organized banks of four and absolutely deny them the space to play...

You know African, I'll take scrutiny all day long. Scrutinize away. But now you answer my points. And furthermore, explain to me how he could've played the likes of Parker to a point where they will now NOT start the season because they were fudged beyond belief, and how we ended up in a situation where we had Sebasstian Bassong, a perfectly FINE CB when we made the CL, yet Harry decided to consistently play Ledders game after game even after EVERYONE saw it was not happening and the boy was badly hurt. He should've had an operation! Now he will retire. Finally, when you HAVE a whole bunch of injured defenders yet you have a whole slew of good midfielders, why could you not work on developing a 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 to suit the players you have? I think we know the answer.

Apologies for being part of this thread descending. I suggest we either revive and old thread or start a new one if we want to scrutinize each other beyond glibness and into details, because I'll do it all day long so delighted am I to finally see a man at our club who will prepare and at least go down fighting if, indeed, he goes down at all.

i'll do my best to answer all this.....tomorrow hahahaa, my ass is tired.

I've got a sneaking suspicion we'll win our long awaited 3rd league title under AVB.

It would be just like Spurs to open up a 30 point lead by the 21st of December only to have the world end because some bloody Mayan had no more space on his stone calendar.

I think they were great performances myself, but thats just my pov. It was brilliant for me. Statistically we got smashed, but it was by design - and to see Arsenal invited into our half only to shoot from 40 yards was a delight - all their tika taka stuff was out the window, their invention lost and their spirit broken. Harry beat Wenger like a red headed step child in those early encounters, imo of course.

RE AVB - I think its very purposeful that he has been quiet. We announce him, and then the press cycle begins.

At first its "CHELSEA FLOP GIVEN LIFELINE BY SPURS!!" hyperbole, then its "AVB LINKED WITH...." until finally it becomes "CAN AVB SHOW HOW GOOD HE WAS AT PORTO?"

So had we jumped into a press conference immediately he would have put both feet into a cauldron of spittle and bile. Instead, by waiting (for the press to calm and for us to make some player moves) he goes into a press conference with a very different atmosphere.

The journalists are already softening a litte. He can be charming and try to "make friends" with a less hostile crowd. He can talk about Bale signing on, Caulkers potential, signing Sigurdsson from under Liverpools nose and bringing in a potentially class defender. And if he runs out of material on that lot he can be humble about learning from his Chelsea mistakes (they will love that) and even talk about how Under Armour apparel is going to help him analyse players fitness...

Its a comlpetely different situation than had he done it last week - dont you think?

That's a good point, AVB is going to come into a nice atmosphere, with lots of positive work already under his belt. Rather than have Levy face ridiculous questions like 'do you fear for the team spirit/a player exodous now you have appointed a man that so clearly failed at Chelsea?', he can now point to all the positive stuff that has happened this past week. Even guys like Danny Rose and David Bentley have said they are really impressed with the appointment.

What I would absolutely love to see is AVB come out with some Rodgers-esque spinning. I'd love to see if he has it in his locker. In the interview Rodgers gave after Sig signed for us, he managed to get the fans, board and players onside in the space of what was probably a ten minute interview. He made it look like he didn't really care about a player that was clearly important to him, and rather than the realistic situation of it probably being that they had to reduce the wage bill - certainly on midfiedlers - before competing on wages for Sig with us, he made it look like everything was rosey at Pool. He talks about how the veterans like Carragher are going to be so important even though they will not be suited to his pressing, possession game.

Basically Rodgers spins, knowing exactly what to say to get everyone he needs to have, onside with him. From what I understand of AVB's media handling, he will simply sit down and take as long as it takes to answer every question as honestly and in as much detail as possible. He says he wants to be different from Mourinho, but I would like to think he has learned something from him about mind-games, how to use the media to get inside people's heads, whether you want to get them onside or to put fear into them. He seemed to try and be a bit Mourinho-lite last year with the'you the media put the pressure on us' or whatever it was, and it seemed like a botched attempt to create an 'us vs them' mentality and just increased the pressure even more.

I'd like to see him relaxed, making specific comments designed for the purpose he wants to achieve. I'd love to see something on Sig, something like 'of course he chose Spurs, this club is going places' and subtly put Liverpool down, subtly get the pressure back on to Rodgers. There is a skill in using what you say to achieve your exact purpose, like Rodgers did, like Fergie does, like Mourinho does, and I'd love to see AVB do it. I'd love a perectly crafted sentence where he basically takes away all the worries that anyone may have of his time at Chelsea, and gets all Spurs fans completely behind him and the team.

Luis Martins began at Sporting Lisbon at the age of 8 years old as a player, but he was unable to make it to the top. After graduating in sports, he began his coaching career with the U16’s at Odivelas FC, a modest team from the Lisbon area where he played until the age of 18. Not surprisingly, he went to Belenenses, a team from the Portuguese 1ª Liga, where he coached all youth ages. After some adventures with senior teams in the 3rd division, he was invited to join Sporting Lisbon were he has now been for 6 years, coaching the youth teams. He was also José Peseiro’s assistant coach for the senior team, during the season when they ended up as runners- up in the UEFA Cup final.

No picture of him in a polo :(

Was away last week - only kept in touch with the headlines, etc.

Does anyone have a link to an AVB press-conference / interview following his appointment or has that not happened yet? Very excited about this

Apologies if that has been discussed already
