one of the toughest draw
two positives from it:
1. can get a revenge for last season
2. it's England vs Italia clash which will hugely affect UEFA club coefficients

Yep.

yet again another toughie. Fiorentina last season, Lyon the one before that in the Last 32.

I need TP for my bunghole

The EL just doesn't appear easy these days. Not only is there the 32 rnd but the teams (considering we are seeded as well) are mostly decent.

That 2012/13 season we should have played Basel,Lyon.Inter,Benfica,Chelsea to win the bloody thing

Out of interest, when looking at who is left in the EL, do you think we can realistically win it?

Absolutely. The glory of cups is that almost everyone is capable of winning them.

We were an average team in '91, but just put an inspired run together, fuelled by the off-pitch heartache.

Teams win leagues based on resources, they win cups based on a fortunate aligning of brilliance, passion and mentality.

We could do any team left in the competition over a h&a. 4.5 of them and we are European champions.

Hmm, sounds like you either
a) think we can be just like the old Spurs and concentrate our efforts on Cups and neglect the league if necessary
b) you've forgotten that since the last 15-20 years most of the teams that win the cups are in the same bracket as those you say we cannot compete with in the league due to their resources

I don't think that we are good enough unfortunately. I thought we were a similar level to Anderlecht over the two games (and I doubt anyone is giving Anderlecht much hope of winning it).

After the Christmas shakedown, we'll settle into our traditional, largely irrelevant, 5th-6th battle with Liverpool. We won't need to neglect the league, but we won't gain anything from busting a gut in it.

In contrast we are the 13th best resourced club in Europe: http://www2.deloitte.com/uk/en/pages/press-releases/articles/combined-revenue-of-top-20-deloitte-football-money-league-clubs-breaks-6bn-barrier.html

Left in the competition only United (2nd), Liverpool (9th) and Dortmund (11th) have more resources than us. In theory then we should be 4th favourites.

I always see what the bookies are saying.. Paddypower has us as 7th favourites. We can definitely win this, but there's 6 or 7 clubs who can say the same thing.

Not an easy draw at all but, as others have said, we have no idea where we will be come February. We could be in great form and sitting comfortably in 3rd place or the polar opposite and be in terrible form and battling to get back into the top 10! A tough draw yes, but it all depends on how we are feeling at the time. So let's not worry now, it's done, we know what awaits us in Feb. Until then we must regroup after Sunday and begin our storm in the top of the table. COYS

Agreed.

We're unlikely to win it if we have to play Fiorentina, Napoli, Dormund, Sevilla and United. But if the latter four draw each other and we get easy games we have a good chance of beating one of them.

P.S. Even if we were the best team in the cup and had a 60% chance of beating each of those five, our chances of winning the cup would only be 8%. If we were even more superior, 80% chances in each tie only gives a 33% chance of winning it all.

Will be very frustrated if we get knocked out straight away again. Fed up of having the EL mess up our fixture list in the first half of the season only for it to have all been for nothing.

Getting top spot was exactly the waste of time we all thought. A loss against Qarabag and a draw against Monaco would have got us through with a similar draw.

A half arsed team before and after the Emirates Marketing Project game won't be enough to get us through against a fiorentina team with nothing to play for in the league.

Meanwhile we look knackered.

Winning the group means that we play the second leg at home. Poch spoke after Thursday's game about how he thought that this was an advantage and why he thought it was important to top the group?

When are you going to get a new drum to bang? The group phase is over now and you've worn this one out.
