( . Y . ) Tottenham v Chelsea | OMT ( . Y . )

Took me a long time to get over yesterdays disappointment (clearly still not over it). But in retrospect, Kane and Dembele in particular put in huge shifts. Kane has an incredible attitude. Yes it didn't quite come off for him, but he gave his all.
And for the first time I look on that pitch and see a player more disappointed than I am that we lost. In fact he is probably beating himself up about it.

We will be ok. These top games are decided by fine margins, it was important not to lose it once we got level, but there we are, mistakes were made. Important to learn and come back strong.

Think Davinson Sanchez addition with his pace gives us greater flexibility to push further forward knowing we have his pace to cover. Trippier for me is a big problem. Not committing his man and giving us a real right flank and not having the same athleticism as Kyle Walker will hurt us in the long run. Against 90% of PL opposition he will probably be ok, but the top sides will expose us there. Him not being able to get around the back of his guy means things get very congested in the middle as we continue to come back in. We will figure this out, just annoying we lost to them lot again.

good post

I wont talk about Sanchez yet not fair on the lad and also due to the disappointment our last few purchases.

I thought that Windy made some interesting points on Trippier

Not sure. This is not me Trippier bashing at all. He is technically a good player. But from what Pochettino needs from his fullbacks, I'm not convinced he has the raw attributes. Pace and power. Allows us to push high up the pitch and still have the legs to recover. Walker was a freak tbh, but there are players out there with a similar profile which are attainable. I don't want to stifle Walker-Peters but I'm not sure its wise going into a season with Trippier and Walker Peters as our only right backs. I think KWP may have been the better bet yesterday but there is obviously the chance he will make some mistakes at this early stage of his career.

Tripps was not ready for that game, KWP will take time. We need a pacier player not sure we will get one as pacy as Walker though.
We played identically as we played against Saudi Sportswashing Machine......but:rolleyes:

We look like we are a yard short all over the pitch I dont include Kane, Eriksen and Dembele in this they were good as were Jan and Toby.

On Wembley, I thought the atmosphere was decent throughout and really good in patches. As someone else has pointed out, the acoustics and the sheer size of the place do mean that some songs don't sweep right round the ground, but there's nothing we can do about that (except hope it isn't at an issue in our own new stadium). Found a good pub - The Arch - five minutes from the ground, so now feel set up for the season!

On the game, it was really interesting to watch us from high in the upper tier. Our lack of pace was really evident and our full backs unwillingness to take on men meant endless occasions when we passed square or backwards. Last season we did a bit of this at times to tire the opposition out as they chased the ball - yesterday it did feel more like we had run out of ideas in the second half. As Jenas pointed out on MOTD last night, we seemed too willing to play it safe against a weakened Chelsea team (altough, ironically, it was a lack of caution in the last couple of frantic minutes that really cost us).

As with the last couple of seasons, you get the feeling we have started slowly, as is the Poch way. We will beat most teams at Wembley, I'm sure, although by the end of yesterday I was probably a bit more concerned about how we will cope in games against our direct rivals.

I do love Poch, but I felt that yesterday's game showed he's got a bit more tactical developing to do.

As for Hugo, at fault for both in my opinion - but good on him for facing the cameras afterwards, and he is due more than a bit of leeway after all the times he has bailed us out in the past.

We tend to get better as the season goes on and generally start slow but that was a great opportunity to get 6 points ahead of Chelsea, we'll win games where we play far worse this season.

Must say that Bakayoko looks like an amazing signing.

I thought Bakayoko looked clumsy and weak. He fell over at ever challenge and whe he challenged he gave away basic fouls

He did make some runs but someone had too as they were so deep

I thought Trippier took up a lot of good offensive positions but we often chose to come back in side or attempt a narrower cross from deep rather than feed him to deliver.

If the plan was to make use off his crossing we didn't do a very good job, if it wasn't then KWP might have been a better choice.
Totally agree on that. The ball comes out wide too late, when the run has stopped, and the full backs then need to either dribble past a defender or beat them for pace to get a cross in. They need to be fed the ball when they are running forward. Much easier to get a cross in then. The few times we managed that, it lead to (half) chances.

Yes he was at fault. His starting postion was waaay too far to the left. Watching it I had a feeling Alonso would hit it at the top right hand corner and he did. Great free kick, but Lloris did the same in the last semi against Cheat$ki.
The wall is there for a reason. He stood were every GK in the world would have positioned himself. If he was to position himself centrally in the goal, he might as well ditch the wall. I have often wondered if perhaps no wall would actually be the better option. Strangely no one tries that.

He gave away some silly fouls as most players new to the PL do but showed good positioning and decent strength. I'll think he'll prove to be a great signing.

Would make it a hell of a lot easier to just hammer a shot at goal. The wall forces you to be precise, and makes it a lot harder to get any useful force behind the shot, thus again making it, usually, easier for the keeper to catch.

He is a good player

But the fouls he gave away were basics IMO and it's something he would sharpen up on

I couldn't believe how easy he fell over though...

Hugo was set up as your coached a season you say and it's what you would expect

You can always be more Central but then you run the risk of doing a joe hart vs Scotland

And for the second goal it's genuinely the hardest place to save as you can't get your hand down there and to move your feet quickly is hard too a short their your base

What wasn't most frustrating for me was his choice of pass to Victor, how poorly Victor dealt with it and the lack of tracking of Alonso.

What about splitting the wall - two small walls left and right with the keeper in the middle of the goal with a view of the ball?

From close range, yes, but from 25+ meters I think it might be worth trying with only 1-2 players in the wall, and packing the penalty area. Would still take a wonder strike to score. The GK will have better vision. How many long range shots go in with 10 defenders in front of goal? Not many!

Even when we got the equaliser, I was never confident that we would hang on. I knew that those clams would find a goal and they did, there is a feeling of inevitability about it.
