Welcome Ange: To Dare is to Didgeridoo

But aren't we often struggling with crosses because we are never set to stop the cross in and we are never set properly to defend the cross because we are always being caught with our pants down on the counter? The thing about these stills where you see all our Defenders seemingly in position to defend a cross, it doesn't account for the chaos of the real situation. It's easy to say "they should be set, how have they scored from that position?" But so often we've been caught with wide gaps all over the place and yes, our players then bust a gut to get back and in theory they sometimes get into the ideal defensive position, they're on their arse when they do, mentally they're in a "holy s***t" panic mindset and we are on the back foot massively, I.e. even when we look set, we aren't set, and that's bourne out time and again on the pitch in this system, I'm sorry.
I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments. I tried to say the same thing in one my posts, we often lose the ball and get attacked directly from that really how well set are we? Like you said and I think said, we are often over compensating defensively and that's how mistakes and misjudgements are made.

Exactly, it's why you see our players get skinned easily or dive into reckless tackles all the time. Because the opposition player has space and time the advantage is always with them. Our players are always on the back foot defensively.

Just on a bit of clarity about the "diamomd" I am referring to, i dont know why i used the term "diamond", i meant "triangle:

Ange sets the midfield up like this:

............AM.............AM

.....................DM

I think switching it to this would instantly improve things in terms of shape and solidity:

......................AM

..............DM............DM

And especially passive from the CBs.
You have to expect crosses into the box and be able to defend them.
A lot of those goals come from an area you'd expect Romero or a DM to be in.
A few of them are in areas where you'd expect to see a GK coming to command his box.

That said....do we let more crosses in than other teams?
I don’t think we see more, but I don’t know for sure

I’ve posted the link to the video
Well worth rewatching to see how we are set up… or more
And when we have time and players
I think it’s way too way to blame the set up and forgwt these players (in most cases) were doing similar under previous managers in a defensive set up

I still remember Udogie Vs Brighton.

Thing is both Mourinho and Conte are stubborn and demand players are purchased to make their system work. Levy and therefore Spurs suite managers like Redknapp and Poch who are willing to apply a degree of pragmatism and work with what they've got.

I'm not just blaming the system. I've said on here before that if you replaced Bentancur/Bissouma with a top level DM like Rodri then a lot of these problems simply dissappear.

But we don't have one of those and there is an alternative to just blindly carrying on doing what we are doing because "that's how we play, mate" winning one, losing one and finishing 10th. And let's face it, probably getting the sack eventually

A top level DM don’t fix the crossing issue

It’s hurt us in so many games

I think it does. You look at Emirates Marketing Project with Rodri and you look at them without and they're looking wide open like we do suddenly. The thing is with someone like Rodri is he anticipates so much danger and so when City lose the ball when they're all piling forward he just has this knack of being there to snuff the danger out before it develops into anything. Having someone with that positional and situational awareness in there is priceless. But we are not going to spend £100m and £250-300K a week on a player of that ready made level so he has to be far more pragmatic than he has been. Or he could just walk/get sacked.

I understand your point and really do not disagree, however we do not have one player who is expert at playing the DM role let alone two, its our biggest weakness in the team.

City’s CBs take charge
Their full backs don’t let the crosses like we do
Never ever noticed Rodri on crosses but have seen ake or Laporte and all the others win the headers

I think a dm would still expect or assume his team animates would mark their players

Of course he would but if he is a good one he would organize those around him. Our CM is really porrus and a DM [ a proper one not players who are drafted in to fill the hole] wou;d make us far more stronger and tighter.

It’s really not the issue
You used to coach
I’d you had 7 or 8 men how against 4 you wouldn’t let the defenders not pick up the men would you?
We haven’t conceded that many goals (same as second and third placed teams) but we have let in the same goal at least 5 times now

It really is, you can have any number of players filling the M/F area but unless there is one there who can see danger being left exposed we will always struggle. But as they say its all about o pinions so we will have to agree to disgree.

You could have 5 DMs
And if no one picks up a player it means nothing
The CBS should be picking up someone’ and taking charge
Liverpool have the what defence in the league with no DM. Their CBs take charge
You can argue and disagree but that’s the facts of modern football
You can always play more defensive players of your players do their job better. We need the latter
We’re not exposed. It happens real infrequently. It was an issue last season I’d agree. What we are not doing is winning any defensive battles when it matters

We're always defending sprinting back towards our own goal, from losing the ball high up the pitch and being overcommitted.

Spoke before about sending 1 full back up at a time, letting them overlap instead (which we did when Son was out, Werner and Udogie making a much stronger partnership) etc

It's like the West Ham game, Ange makes the adjustments so he sees the issue then just reverts back to his preferred the next game. Reminds me of Pep constantly trying to prove how smart he is.

Going around in circles mate as i said we will have to agree to disagree.
