Transfer thread

Has it changed that much? Hojbjerg, Reguilon and Bergwijn all fit the profile of signings made under Poch, whilst Hart is no different to Vorm.

You could argue that Doherty is different in approach to before given he's 29 in Jan, but the ridiculously low fee made his age less relevant - if he stays til 33/34 with no re-sale value afterwards, its just £3m per year for the fee.

Bale again you could argue is different but it there is little/no fee, then its just about his wages
Not a complete shift, but a change none the less. Focus on players that can come in and do a job quickly over long term potential. Of course long term potential will always be a part of our strategy, but to a lesser extent now. Like it was under Redknapp.

Players for a different system. Assuming we're actually in for Skriniar I think that's one example.

Can definitely see that others can see things differently. My main point was one about cooperation between Levy and Mourinho as looking more likely rather than Mourinho not getting what he wants. Of course he won't get everything he wants, but that's also a part of cooperation.

Yeah if the £15m from the group stages is accurate then that would pay for a ST with maybe some left over.
Dont qualify and perhaps we get someone on a free.

Makes sense imo, as I would guess we've spent more than planned atm.
I assume Levy/Jose had a budget and plan.?

And the execution up to this point has been excellent. But from Levy's viewpoint there has been a change in recent weeks (post original discussions) and that is any prospective income from the stadium looks to have been kicked a lot further down the road.

So it wouldn't surprise me if that's why Dele has become quickly expendable. Especially as Rose Foyth Aurier are proving hard to move on. We need to balance the books to a certain degree and Levy would like a chunk in, mainly to cover our arses but also Jose probably wants things trimmed down as well. Plus if we need to go again in January, we can.

I get the impression from the doc and type of signings we have made in this window that Levy is actually listening to Mourinho as he is a little in awe of him and his experience. A lot of our recent managers have been inexperienced and or had little track record in large transfer dealings. Bergwijn and Gedson seem like opportunist signings rather than addressing a specific problem but everyone signed so far is looking to address something for the here and now and even the one with the largest potential uplift could be seen as a short term solution due to the buy back clause (which is glad we’ve done, it will be a lot easier to replace Reggie if he is a roaring success if we are back in the CL / are winning prizes)

I think that the process is the same as it has been for a while, it is just that Mourinho has been happy with pragmatic solutions to gaps in the squad whereas Poch wanted specific players and turned down alternatives.

All the credible sources say that Bergwijn was an opportunistic signing. We'd been tracking him for a while and moved when it was clear that he was available at a reasonable price. I understand that it is the same with Reguilon and Bale this window. I think that Gedson was just brought in to cover Sissoko and line Mendes' pockets.

Seeing the window close with the manager not getting the CF option he wants would be a negative mark for sure, have not suggested otherwise so I'm not really sure what you're railing against in my posts

At last. You have used the word CF option rather than back up. So now we are agreed.

Levy and Jose are both very intelligent, very experienced professionals who are damn near the best at what they do. The narrative that they were going to "misunderstand" each other like naïve teenagers was always hilarious.

My view
- They had a plan long before Jose joined
- Levy needs to trust his manager, right now he trusts Jose
- As others have done the homework on, before and after the stadium build (and land acquisition stuff), Spurs spend money (the process took a long time)
- Levy (as all good businessmen are) is an opportunist, this is a buyers market now

Kind of my point too. Who we bring in will depend on the manager and we see changes in our approach with different managers. There is considerable cooperation there.

Assuming the Vinicius deal is done - as widely reported - we're now one decent CB away from having one of our best transfer windows ever. All in the midst of pandemic restrictions and a grueling early season schedule that has been negotiated quite nicely to date.

More wine?

I think you guys understate the Jose difference. Players want to play for him more than any other manager we've had. (since I started supporting the club)

The players signed this window are no different in stature to the likes of Ndombele or Lo Celso, who were signed last summer - arguably they are all a lower profile than the former (Bale aside) - i know you view everything through Jose tinted glasses but there's not much to support your thinking here - the club has more money to spend due to the stadium being complete and the raised profile from the last few yesrs of exposure from competing for top honors. Top clubs with money available sign top players - that is our reality now whoever is in charge of the first team.

Why aren’t players signing for Ole?

I imagine it’s Woodward fudging things up in negotiations. They seem to have a hard on for Sancho but don’t seem to understand that just because you pay 100m for someone that no else is prepared to pay for a player, it doesn’t make them a 100m player. Thought they would have learnt from Pogba.
I have a nagging feeling that Ole is still being seen as a stop gap too and they won’t be patient with a poor start, with Poch waiting in the wings.

Yeah I agree
I mean picture talking to Ole and Jose..,
One comes with track record that’s greater than our club, the other won the league in Norway after getting the mighty Cardiff relegated

Van der Beek and Fernandes recently?

Woodward is the person who is being criticised for Uniteds transfer approach.

Do you think Lampard is the reason Chelsea are signing big name players?

Regardless our transfers this window are not of a higher stature than what we can expect to attract, unless you want argue otherwise i don't see any evidence to back up metalgears post.

Credit to Mourinho though for his role in identifying/okaying the players we have signed as the potential success rate looks very high atm
