Transfer speculation

I would have bought Lukaku and just started him in the League cup and FA cup games. Harry for the PL and CL with Lukaku on the bench.

That would last all 5 months (till Lukaku would agitate his way out at a 100% reduction in value in the following window)

Monaco have been ripped apart this window. With Silva, Mendy, Mbappe and Bakayoko gone/going, Lemar is now really their only top player left

It really makes you appreciate Levy and Poch, as we could easily be in a similar position, yet have only lost Walker so far.

It shows the difference in approach too - we get labelled a selling club and told that our strategy of buying low is purely so we can sell high at a later date, that is of course a benefit of the approach but not its sole focus, whereas Monaco and Porto buy these types of players with the intention of selling them and happily do so once they reach their peak value

It must be gutting though, as they were one of the best 4 teams in the world last season. It will take a long time to rebuild, even with the best production line in the world (which they don't have)

I dont think we need any 'established quality' at all. I actually think that sort of player might even be detrimental to our squad.

I think the sort of young, still slightly rough diamonds that we seem to be interested in (Barkley, Toljan, Pereira, Seri, Kovacic, etc) are exactly the right type of players for us. They have shown something already, but are still young enough to improve and hungry enough to WANT to improve.

Any player that comes to Spurs has to accept Pochettino's ethos of coming here to train. It is quite likely that any new player coming in will not be a first team starter, especially not initially, 'established quality' is far less likely to accept that and that can start to lead to cliques and poor harmony in the dressing room.
We saw this with Sissoko expecting to start games, even though he was doing nothing to warrant it.

tickle my balls with a feather.

The pressure that comes with a large transfer fee doesn't seem to be worth it (Janssen, Sissoko, Lamela, who did admittedly eventually come good though). Better to sign someone rather unknown for a low fee and let Poch and the team work with them to fit into the side without too much fuzz from the media and what have you. The media in England are so desperate to get on the back of big signings, making up these tragic stories of failed investments and blah blah blah. Better of us to sign rough diamonds for relatively small fees.

Alli, Wanyama, Alderweireld, Dembele, Eriksen - all examples of players we bought for practically peanuts who have done really well for us. I can only think of Son and Lamela as relatively successful large sum transfers for us over the past few seasons.

The way transfer fees are going we could have sold him for twice what we paid
What - you mean like we are going to be able to do with Sissoko?

So you think Lukaku would come to Spurs and be happy to sit on the bench for the big games? Additionally you think that we should buy a back-up player and pay him wages twice as big as our highest earning first choice player? What impact do you think that will have to squad harmony and also contract negotiations for every single existing player at the club?

£150m for Mbappe? I know people say that the transfer market is insane but this guy is 18 and has just started out. The football world is doing it the wrong way round. World record for the youngest player? It used to be a world record for an older player when they had been at the top of their game for a few seasons at least. I don't think it is just the transfer market that is a bit fcuked. It is football in general that seems to be changing and I hope it doesnt start to ruin it.

Look at when we sold Bale for £86,000,000. He had been at the top of his game for a couple of seasons but was known for some time and been in the game since 16. He probably hadnt reached his full potential or his peak but others on the list below (a list of absolute legends) had done and you could say deservedly warranted their transfer fee. Now it seems we are finding the new talent but to sign them it will take a world record transfer fee. Nuts.

There was no mention of prices in GB's post - read back above. All he said was 'Players signed by EPL clubs this summer who would improve us:'
I was quoting the fees for Salah and Lacazette that had been mentioned as possible improvements to our squad, I don't think either would be automatic starters if all are fit.
