Transfer Rumour Thread

40 grand a week will cushion the blow for him :)

Good luck to the boy, he's given it his all with us, you can tell he really wanted it. Just not quite good enough, although I think he could go to a new club and play very well as a flying winger.

If we get £12m, that's pretty decent.
He is basically Gabriel Obertan

Absolutely. I'd like to see him go to a progressive club like Watford

Have you watched either of them recently?

Watford are a horrible long ball team full of cloggers and their owners are only looking to make profits of player sales.

Saudi Sportswashing Machine aren't as poor as results might suggest, but they do have some attitude issues in their squad. McClaren will get them playing decent, though conservative, football.

Surprised at that, TBH. I've only seen them in four or five games, but they've played some decent stuff when I've seen them. Ighalo and Deeney have a great, old-school partnership, and seem like a perfect fit for Townsend's direct style (i.e. endless crosses and shots).

Saudi Sportswashing Machine, on the other hand, don't seem to really play with that much width, and I'm not sure Townsend would fit in with players like Perez, Wijnaldum, and Sissoko who would prefer to play it on the floor. Then again, he could provide something different in that team, but I feel like his service would be a much better fit for Deeney and Ighalo than either Cisse or Mitrovic. Of course, Saudi Sportswashing Machine is a much bigger club than Watford, but I feel like in a pure footballing sense, he would fit in better at Vicarage Road.

Ah but you forget, they have a well dressed foreign manager with a nice accent and therefore they must be a progressive club who play good football.

EXCLUSIVE

Axel Witsel has refused to rule out joining the Premier League’s Belgian contingent, but Tottenham may have to wait until the summer to sign the 27-year-old.

I don't buy this one at all. Why would we add a huge earner and big fee to a position where we have great depth. I'm sure he's a good footballer, but unless Dier is planning on moving back to CB, I can't see why we'd blow all that money on Witsel.

Pretty much. Although we do need a backup holding midfielder (imo), he's far too high profile to fit that description.

But they do play good football, to be honest. It's just that their passages of play start further forward, towards the edge of the penalty box, and the distance in between the defense and the opponent's penalty area is usually covered by a long out ball. It's not a bad strategy at all if you have two strong, tall, fast forwards who can play off each other.

Leicester are Cloggers Supreme. But Watford seem like they can actually play.

Isn't Witsel a bit more of a hybrid - effective at DM, but can also carry the ball decently and has a good pass?
Basically Dier with slightly better passing/vision?
Dier, Dembele and Witsel could be a nice trio of options.
Add Payet in the summer and we'll be sorted!

They hoof it long to the front two and then look to win the second ball and play for there. It is exactly the same tactic that Allardyce deployed at Bolton, but of course he was labelled anti football for doing it while Flores is labelled a visionary tactician.

I think Townsend pushing for a loan is a sign he still believes he might resurrect his Spurs career. His history at Spurs shows a determined and stubborn young man with enormous self belief, and to me his unwillingness to leave really is just keeping with this pattern. I guess there is a chance but it certainly is a small one. Personally I think he needs to cut loose from Spurs for the sake of his career, but on the other hand if it was me I wouldn't want to leave either :(.

You are right in that wherever he goes he needs to play on the wing. He's no wingback either so a more traditional 4-4-2 (or maybe that is trendy again now ) would suit his talents better.

And I think Watford will go back to the championship before Saudi Sportswashing Machine do.

according to the standard Townsend to Saudi Sportswashing Machine would be loan with option to buy.We will see if this is true or not i guess in the next few days.

I agree. They punt it up the pitch and the either try to hold it up for back up... Or work something between the two.

Now that even rumbled and we were the first to do a number in them they have come unstuck

Funny how this tactic when overseen by a suave, well dressed, foreign manager is seen by some as being something that it isn't. Personally I think Flores has done a brilliant job there with them looking reasonably likely to stay up this season, but it is still Sam Allardyce Bolton'esqe football of the highest degree.

It is also probably the tactic that England should use in major championships.

Totally agree, every competition finals England get to they try to play "Foreign football" as to play long ball they would be held to ridicule, much better to be laughed at toiling away and losing trying to do something we just don't have the players to put in action. Best chance England had was when they picked Taylor and he fell for the same old trick.

Marca in Spain reporting we had a £23m (€30m) bid turned down for Jackson Martinez...Athetico apparently want the same they paid for him (£26m I think)

Only 3 goals in 20 for them, so they might sell...I guess depends if they want the cash to spend before their transfer ban kicks in.

Martinez is terrible. I can't imagine a more un-Poch-like signing than an old flat-track-bully from a poor league (Portugal), whose been found completely wanting having moved to a major league (Spain)

I never liked him or thought he was any good, i would rather we went for that other fella from spain we have been linked with williams fella looks good.
