Toby Alderweireld

Said when we signed him that he could be our best buy of the summer as he and Jan have played together before and always looked the part, happy to say that is how it is turning out and him and Jan as good as any pairing in the Prem ( imo).

How important is Dier screening the back 4 to them looking so in control? Or put another way, had Alderweireld been playing CB last season without us having a DM, would he have looked as sure footed?

Well I have said elsewhere that Dier ( imo) has been our best player so far this season and has helped us with the biggest problem we had last season which was our CM. As for what would have happened if Toby had been here last year I have no idea, and to be honest i do not really worry about it.

Can but hope they produce figures like these at Spurs after 100+ games...

A good point, and not the only reason we look better defensively this season either. We have cover and competition for both full back spots where we last season had to play players out of position some of the time, and Walker was massively off form at times last season. We have competition for the front 4 positions and the players not willing to put in the effort required by Pochettino last season have been shipped out. And a lot of our players have had a season under Poch behind them. We're looking much better defensively as a result.

All that being said Alderweireld has been a very good signing. Very good value the way the market is these days. When was the last time we had a clear cut first choice centre back partnership we were happy with?

Yep, a case of them not doing their homework and trying to be "clever" to make up for it. And this is someone that's been in England for over a year already.

They also call Clinton "N'Jie", like Die. They get paid a lot of money, I wouldn't think it would be beyond them to ask someone at the club/ground "how do you pronounce his name?"
If you think that's bad, you'd be pulling your hair out if you listened to American announcers. Haven't seen a name they didn't butcher.

What do people think Toby has brought to our defence that has made a difference? Is it brute strength? Is it knowing when to dive in and when to stand off? Is it simply that he has forced Verts to up his game?

What do people think? And how does he compare to Woodgate, King and Dawson in terms of his strengths (and weaknesses)?

I think this is a key part of it. I suspect there is a bit of healthy rivalry between them driving Verts to better performances recently.

One thing he has is a great long range pass
Every game he has played he has pinged a cracking pass form right to left and hit his man
He also shows how to read the game so doesn't jump in... And that's the same with Verts. So they compliment each other there
He is good in the air too

Hmm...

This signing has made Jan realise we are serious again. Always Jan was matching the perceived ambition of the club. When we signed weaker cbs like fazio and vlad he thought why try to hard if the club isn't.
Now he's buying into it because he can see real intent.

it also helps that he is no longer shifted out to left back when the manager feels like it...Jan is a happy man ;)
