Toby Alderweireld

After Tottenham let a two goal lead slip at the weekend - new signing Toby Alderweireld praised his former Southampton teammates.

Speaking to London24, Alderweireld explained that his former teammates excelled at shielding the defence, putting himself and the rest of the back four under less pressure.

Alderweireld conceded a penalty in the 2-2 home draw with Stoke City, and offered an apology for his mistake too.

He said: "I think you have to play better because if you don’t play football any more they can keep putting pressure on you, put more guys in the box and then it’s very difficult to defend every ball.

"At Southampton, Victor Wanyama and [Morgan] Schneiderlin put good pressure on so the opposition didn’t have time to put the ball in the box. It makes it easier for defenders.

"I think everybody worked very hard for each other and tried to do their best, and of course maybe if I didn’t concede the foul for the penalty it would have been different."

He was not bemoaning the effort of his Spurs teammates, but the execution and quality clearly was not of the standard he got used to last season.

Spurs started Ryan Mason and Eric Dier in the midfield, although the former was substituted for Nabil Bentaleb in the 68th minute with the score a 2-0. Exciting teenager Dele Alli was an unused substitute.

Even had he re-signed at Southampton however, Alderweireld would not have had the same luxury as he did last season, with Morgan Schneiderlin sold to Manchester United.

Perhaps he would like it if Spurs would submit an offer for Victor Wanyama to help him out.

...........................

any defence would look better with Schneiderlin in front, just look what he is now doing for Utd. Said it all along, he will be the signing of the summer.

have to say though disappointed with Alderweireld and the way he gave away the pen. For an experienced player he should have done a lot better

Am i the only one with a problem with this interview? I mean he has been in 5 minutes and is already saying our midfield is brick and we need to be more like Southampton?

i think it reads worse than how he probably said it...isolated quotes put together to make a sensationalist headline/article

At least he took responsibility for his average defending which gave away the pen

I know you have to be patient with a new signing, but I wonder just how crucified he'd've been if he'd had Chiriches on the back of his shirt on Saturday?
Up until this point he was playing really well. And he did well in the Man Yoo game as well. So Nothing like a Vlad performance. Stupid penalty to give away but one of those times when he just made a rash judgement and tried to grab him.

Chiriches was often flawless for 89 minutes of a match too

I don't. Granted he has to accept responsibility for the penalty, but he's right about the midfield not protecting them. Lloris is one of the best keepers in the league, but he can't save everything. He's busy in virtually every game,

I do think that Dier playing there shows an acceptance by Poch that the midfield has not been good enough giving defensive cover. Hopefully we'll see someone new signed as CM with a bit more defensive nous - Kramer would be my choice.

It's from Ben Pearce's interview in Ham and High. The quotes are out of context. Toby was asked about Southampton's defensive record and he said he didn't make any mistakes last year so he was gutted to make such a stupid one on his home debut for us, and went on to talk about Wanyama and Schneiderlin in that context.

Typical of journalists to just cut/paste the sensationalist bits... no wonder players give such anodyne comments nowadays.

These comments
Dembele questioning the managers comments on Kane
Seemingly mentally weak
Christians comments on the managers tactics the other week

Huh? I don't follow what you mean by Dembele and Eriksen's comments; have you got links to those please?
Mentally weak? Yep - like almost all Spurs teams sadly. However, that in itself says more about the age and experience of the current squad rather than any disharmony etc

I'm not sure I've ever seen the squad appear so united - not since the 91 team anyway. Perhaps it's just the twitter age, but they appear to socialise together quite a bit, cross-nationalities, and without heavy drinking either.

We know Ade and Lennon are outsiders, but the rest have largely come through youth football together (either spurs, england or belgium; our french and latin groups have now largely gone) as a cohort(s). Kane and Mason seem to hold court (Dier, Rose and Bentaleb strong characters too), but they seem harmonious with the experienced but more reserved Lloris and Verts

Re the age - Ian Healey's book has something interesting to say about this. He says one of the reasons England won the Ashes was because they were a tight group in their early 20s who obsessively lived their lives for cricket, whereas the Australians were in their late 20s/early 30s and had an extended family camp - with all the other distractions and priorities.

Thats because hitc.com took the interview from http://www.london24.com/sport/footb...y_error_in_home_debut_against_stoke_1_4196546 and focused on the juicy quotes and removed the ones with Alderweireld being the first Spurs defender in GHod knows how long to admit to fudging up.

Heres the full thing

Spurs defender rues costly error in home debut against Stoke

Toby Alderweireld admits it was a bitter blow to make a key error in his home debut against Stoke on Saturday, and the defender has held his hands up for his part in Tottenham’s collapse.

But the summer signing says Spurs must learn to control the game better when they are ahead, and to keep the pressure on their opponents rather than inviting it upon themselves.

The signing of Alderweireld – along with fellow centre-back Kevin Wimmer, and right-back Kieran Trippier – was designed to shore up a Lilywhites defence that conceded 53 goals in their 38 league games last season.

But, with Spurs seemingly heading for a 2-0 victory over Stoke at the Lane on Saturday, Alderweireld put his hands on Potters substitute Joselu just inside the penalty area to concede a 78th-minute spot kick – and the resulting goal was followed by an equaliser as Mauricio Pochettino’s side threw away two points.

While Joselu appeared to go down easily, Alderweireld had no complaints about the decision and directed the criticism at himself.

“Last season [at Southampton] I didn’t make one mistake,” said the 26-year-old. “I want to prove myself very much here and so it feels very bad for me when I make a mistake in my first home game. I have to go back and work very hard to improve my game and I’ve got to learn about it.

“I was just trying to win the ball and if I had just stood behind him [Joselu] he couldn’t have done anything so it was stupid of me.

“I think Spurs is a massive club so of course I’m happy to play here, to sign here. I want to give 100 per cent and I think until the penalty it was ok, and then I made a mistake. That’s part of being a defender but of course I’m very disappointed about it.”

While Alderweireld was cross with himself after the rapid downturn in Spurs’ fortunes on Saturday, he believes the whole team has lessons to learn.

The Belgium international spent last season on loan with Southampton, who boasted the second-best defensive record in the Premier League after champions Chelsea – and he was disappointed with Spurs’ attempt to see out the game against Stoke.

“I think in the first half we played a good half,” he said. “We were 2-0 up so nothing bad happens and then in the second half we didn’t play football any more.

“We couldn’t keep the pressure on them and they kept on coming and, from a fault of mine, it’s a penalty. Then we just had to get over the line with the three points and we didn’t do that.

“Until the penalty it’s quite ok, they had a couple of chances but not too much. I think you have to play better because if you don’t play football any more they can keep putting pressure on you, put more guys in the box and then it’s very difficult to defend every ball.

“At Southampton, Victor Wanyama and [Morgan] Schneiderlin put good pressure on so the opposition didn’t have time to put the ball in the box. It makes it easier for defenders.

“I think everybody worked very hard for each other and tried to do their best, and of course maybe if I didn’t concede the foul for the penalty it would have been different.

That’s football, sometimes people make mistakes and unfortunately this time it was me.”

I don't. Granted he has to accept responsibility for the penalty, but he's right about the midfield not protecting them. Lloris is one of the best keepers in the league, but he can't save everything. He's busy in virtually every game,

Neither of the goals on Saturday were the fault of the midfield

He gave away the pen with a brash call

And the other goal him and verts watched Dioff put it away

Good interview. Let's hope his team mates take it in the vien it seems to be meant in.
We all make mistakes, it's how we deal with them that counts.
