Thomas Frank - Head Coach

I’ve read his books and not been particularly impressed, but each to their own. You may be interested to know that in retrospect I can see some of his influences/teachings in the way you post

Spot on. Among others. I'm always learning of course...be really interested in anyone whose work you like, if so feel free to PM me...thanks

Taking away all mitigating circumstances surrounding the game - the performance tonight was really good (as was Dortmund) - we attacked and controlled the game well in the phases that we were setting out to do so. Whether we can do that domestically remains the question.
Absolutely a very good and controlled even comfortable performance. Some positive signs in the Burnley game too. Will be interesting to see if we can do more of the same coming up against better teams. If we can Frank could still turn this around.

I'm not super confident it will happen, but time will tell.

Look at the game from a tempo perspective, that's where it doesn't work in the PL. Several moments today where we and Frankfurt were happy to sit back and let the other knock the ball around at walking pace in their own half.

The United game and the first Brentford game this season was the only time I saw a team play as slowly/with less urgency than us.

To make it work in the PL, we would need more tempo, and better ball retention, a lot of the other stuff could possibly translate
Agreed.

A pattern for me this season is that when we get the ball into decent situations in and around the final third our attacking players show themselves rather capable of creating chances. Just to be clear, not saying they're fantastic, but we do create a decent amount of chances from those positions.

Our main difficulties are getting there, getting the ball to the middle third in decent to good situations. Frankfurt, Burnley, to some extent Dortmund too as well as those games you mentioned teams have been fairly accommodating in that regard.

The number of teams in the PL that will be accommodating in that way is limited.

That for me will be one of the biggest tests in the upcoming tougher run. Can we progress the ball in a useful fashion against better teams.

I think with the players we currently have it is a system which helps us. The front three tonight need to be playing in such proximity to each other. The reason Muani has been largely quiet for us is we don't play him properly. Like Simons. Odobert on the right looks good. The three of them work well together (certainly better than when isolated, or Muani's being asked to play a traditional hold-up CF role). I think with the likes of Gallagher, Sarr and Bissouma -all tempo players- we could find the necessary tempo to at least press like we did at times here. Again, to even consider this it's probably a case of acknowledging that the type of football we play under TF is the key, as waiting for a passer/passing game is likely not going to happen. So hey, all-in on something which could help/be an alternative to his 4-3-3...

I am currently of this question - can we progress the ball in a manner which makes the best of both who we have and what Frank wants us to be (we might be saying the same thing).

Anyone else feels that Frank is perhaps having a positive outcome on the Solanke vs Tel CL squad debate whilst firing up Muani in the process?

Solanke was without a goal this entire season only 10 days ago. He'd had a miserable time with injuries and then his manager backs him to play in the CL, which is clearly an easier pace than the PL. We sit here this morning with our main number 9 having 2 goals across the 2 fixtures and even getting a rest on the bench last night. Additionally, Muani gets in the scoring as well, something he desperately needs.

I missed the game last night but have read most of the posts. Quite interesting that nobody has mentioned that our strikers are back in the goals and our centre halves are getting a clean sheet, whilst not having to bail the team out with goals. Sort of, we Romero did get the assist. I know it's only a couple of goals but they all help the psychology of these forwards.

I feel for Tel missing out but as we head into a game a week for a month, it does feel like Frank's tough decision has paid off. Of course, it would have been different and still could be if Dom got injured or does at the weekend. Then Frank will be the chump again. It's definitely not easy making these tough calls.

The tempo in our games has been steadily improving. We're moving the ball around faster.

To a man, I don't think anyone thought Manui had any future with us. Almost setup a goal in the opening minute, and scored. Worked hard. Personally could see it was in him. Frank stood by him and got him performing.

Playing 3 at the back also gives us more experience, which is what the side has been lacking imo. Our defenders are more settled, experienced, and with 3 can contribute in attack. What we've seen in the PL and again last night, is we are not always ready to transition into defending however. The team gets used to dominating possession, and then after 40 mins has to defend. The positioning is off, the players look hesitent. We saw after our goal us drop too deep. But part of that is just adjusting and getting settled in a defensive formation. Then we pushed out more and regained control of the game.

We still need reinforcements in attack. Tel can come back in which should add something. But we are light in attack. An injury to Odobert and we'd slide backwards. Can the Spurs team sign a player for the left who could add trickery and goals? Or is Tel as good as anyone we could sign now? And we'll use the money better in the summer.

Kolo Muani - I don’t trust players who appear to show up only when they feel like it. His best games by far have been against 2 of his former clubs. Maybe we should hope for Juve in the last 16.

Exactly this, let's see where we go from here, if we see marked improvements in the league then maybe it is a long term thing. Who knows.....
For sure. If we begin to translate European performances onto the league scene then there is no reason why he shouldn't be sticking around. Realistically for the last month or two of the season there will be less of a strain on the squad with likely having players back and maybe knocked out of CL so less games - we can hope to see some more positive and consistent signs in the league that will begin to give us things to look forward to for next season....

Indeed, it's a bit early to be suggesting Muani has proved anything. Like you say he's done it in about two games, against his former clubs. His attitude and output has been poor, he needs to show it more often and on a consistent basis....

I think the point here is that Frank is given a squad by our club and his job is to optimise what he has to work with. Inevitably, the recruitment team didn't allow Frank to start with the forwards he would optimally like. There would have been a conversation back in August telling Frank that Muani was available as an alternative. That conversation (with Lange) would have also shown the players strengths and weaknesses and no doubt his application, consistency and even first touch would have formed part of the conversations along with many other data points. So Frank gets to choose whether he wants less than the full package on loan. He chose to move forward with it with his eyes open. It is therefore knowing that he has to do a lot of work on him in a new league.

So I'm not surprised at all that Frank gave his player a little wake up call last week and left him on the bench whilst Scarlett came on. I'm not surprised the player returned his manager's nurturing with a better performance. We now get to see whether the player can maintain this level of commitment for the rest of the season.

I'm still in the camp that we don't convert this loan to a permie signing. It's up to Muani to prove otherwise to the club.

So assuming we have a rough February (we probably will) is there enough green shoots to trust him to pull the league thing together Mar-May?
There have already been some green shoots within the last few games, it just needs to convert into showing a more dominant performance over the course of a match.

As for our rough month of fixtures, I'd wager that we win at least one of our games against City, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Man U and the Goons. Not going to guess where/how or number of points, but we will achieve more than expected - it's always the way.....
