The transfer thread

I dont think we'll take it up, unless we think we can flip him for a profit in a window or two, and that will earn us more than our sell-on clause. He doesnt really look the calibre.
i think it hinges on whether we can get a pre season in the US.

with webb paratici and lange i think we might soone become a trading club for young foreign players.

Whichever of Biss and Bentancur we're not going to extend their contract on. Numbers wise we look optimum at the moment (7 CMs for 3 spots)

Personally i would stick and keep both, as the upgrades arent obvious at all, and the future is Gray
Gray himself said earlier this season that his best role is the 8 role. That may not end up being the case in a while. But I think it's way too early with him to say that he'll be the answer in the DM/6/4 role. Particularly if not playing a double pivot.

January will be a tricky one. Assuming we're still in the EL we really need to get Spence registered. Some rumours that Yang will be integrated and not loaned out. And if we're looking for new signings that can make a quicker impact I would think having them registered for the EL would be important as it's one of the chances of a trophy and may also end up being our most realistic route into the CL.

We can only register club trained players for EL. We are already 2 over our quota for non-club trained.

In theory we could not register Forster, Werner and Regulion, to get Spence + 1 new signing in. But signing a club trained player (Cirkin, Archer) might be how we need to do it.

Reguilon is not registered.

lol - way too many permutations and combinations for my tiny little mind, and I guess we don't name the squad until end of Jan anyway.

The only thing I'd ask is that we select the second half of season UEFA squad based on our future, not our present or past. The only time the present should be considered is long term injuries opening up spaces. With that mindset, Spence should get priority over players like Werner, Davies, Forster etc. Let these summer departees fight for the other spaces.

Agreed on past, but think we should select based on the present.

If there's a significant gap in quality between Forster and our younger backup goalkeepers do we really want to end up in an important game with our third best GK instead of our second best if Vicario is injured?

Similarly for Davies imo.

it is the cup competition I would be prioritizing for sure.

It's a hard 'no' for me personally. I'd rather save the money and put it towards a player who will be an instant improvement on what we have.
I'm not sure that player exists as a realistic target for us in that role. I quite clearly could be wrong, but most of the suggestions floating around have significant question marks associated with them for me at least.

Really need good decisions on whoever we end up going for as an instant upgrade. Sideways steps for a lot of money are hugely detrimental.

If the right immediate upgrade can't be found signing a good young profile fit with a lot of potential is the obvious solution.

I think Bentacur will be gone this summer
There are viable options we can get if we want like ederson
and assuming Gray steps up in midfield that would mean we could theoretically let Bissouma leave the summer after
Imagine squad planning like that

I agree on viable options, but I have some doubts about for example Ederson as an immediate upgrade. From what I've seen mostly played in a double pivot and (like Bentancur and Bissouma) more natural as an 8.

I'm not claiming to know that much about Ederson or any other specific target. Just that I think quite a few of them have valid questions about them being an immediate/obvious upgrade. The DM/6 market is quite bad at the moment, particularly for the lone DM we usually play with.

Our two senior CMs, worth a good £40m each, going for free/minimal fee, just as they are approaching their peak?

Develop Gray to be the long term fixture, but we need both the others on new 3 year deals (2 year extensions)

You think they are worth £40m and nearing peak?
I’d argue they are at their peak now and we wouldn’t get as much as you think
They would be leaving here either for an inferior club or an overseas one. Either way it wouldn’t be to a side paying top money IMO

I think that's the impossible question for a fan to answer. We see Austin and Whiteman in their mid-twenties and still have no clue about them. We even see our club dish out a new contract to Austin. We can see a significant gap in experience, but that's about all. Who knows who would perform best out of our 3 backup keepers. I think we all assume they'll be flying the nest soon.

I guess where I'm confused is who backfills the club trained slots that are currently taken by Whiteman and Austin? Do we even have a player that turns 21 this season and has completed 3 season at our club before their 21st b'day? Devine or Scarlett perhaps? What about Josh Keeley? Looking out our trajectory, it feels like we're still a couple of years away before our young guns naturally fill club trained slots.

We should probably makes sure we're in a UEFA comp first.

Reserve GKs are there to make training interesting for the #1. Its never about playing.

Austin must have good repartee and Whiteman we know is the complete renaissance man.

I have.
TBH I was surprised at the 'deal' and it smacked of a punt off the back of Lo Celso...

It wasn't even that. They didn't have any cash, so we accepted a sell-on clause of what we decided was their most valuable player. And then a secondary clause that we could buy him ourselves instead. But the primary thing is that we get say 50% (or whatever percentage) of the fee when they sell him next.

It's a similar situation to we had with Bergovic years ago: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2010/apr/21/portsmouth-tottenham-asmir-begovic-accounts
