The Stats Thread

We really should have won more league titles. Don't understand why we never did so after winning the League and Cup double in 1961. Even the likes of Sunderland, Sheff Wednesday and Wolves have won more league titles than us. Why did we went to sleep after the record-breaking season of 1961 ? How I wish we can win the league title for once ! But just can't see us winning the league title ahead of the likes of ManCity or Chelsea now.

Ipswich Town were the surprise package of 1961-62 with Alf Ramsey's wingless wonders and points dropped against them cost us the League Championship.

After that, it was a case of replacing some of the older players from the Double team and these invariably took time to gel properly.

Some better finishes to the season could have given more titles.

Well at least we remain ahead of Emirates Marketing Project for another season...

A really disappointing thing is to look at the same table at the end of the 1985-86 season. Liverpool lead on 28 trophies, Villa are second on 18 and we are equal third with United and Arsenal on 14. United had only drawn level with us the season before and the Arsenal figure includes the Fairs Cup win.

Our league record was poor but at least on the cups we were very good: tied with Villa with 7 FA Cups and with Liverpool for total cups (12).

Indeed... the sad fact is that Spurs have been relegated from the top division more times than we've won it and I also don't see us challenging for the title any time soon :(

Cheers for the info.

What happened to Rowe' push-and-run side that lead to Spurs nearly being relegated just 5 seasons after winning our first league title?

Some better finishes to the season could have given more titles.

...

Spurs faltering during the run-in, some things never change at this club then #-o

At least we used to have the consolation of regular FA Cup wins to make up for it like you say but even those days seem like a distant memory now.

how about by player - who is our worst passer, most mistakes etc. ? would make for some spicy debates til the season start

Well according to this article http://www.statsbomb.com/2014/05/the-sodden-boot-the-worst-finisher-in-the-premier-league/

Soldado, Townsend and Paulinho were statistically amongst the 10 worst finishers in the league last season... Although I doubt it will stimulate much debate as we all knew that already!

Wouldn't be surprised to discover that Townsend's shooting is actually more accurate than most, but our style of play under AVB, when Townsend made most of his starts - often produced banked-up defences, so a higher percentage of his attempts were likely to be through a ruck of players from outside the box. Not sure the extent to which 'ExpG' takes this kind of stuff into account?

Whereas i formed the impression Paulinho was willing to attempt far more difficult conversions from close range. As for Soldado, presumably those stats include his penalties, in which case his conversion rate from open play is even more wretched.

It takes position into account too. So unless the defence are all packed into the 6 yd box I'd say his shooting's pretty poor.

When I looked at his stats earlier in the season I don't think a high proportion were blocked - they were mostly saved.

Point is whether deflected or not they were from outside the box because of banked defences. And if most were saved doesn't that mean they were on target?

On target shots aren't always good ones - just ask Lennon.

I don't know if it's possible to have a high expg shooting from outside the box - from my understanding it's not.

According to Squawka there were 3 goals scored from corners by Stoke, which means that Spurs finished 19th in the league for the 2nd consecutive season at this particular aspect of goal scoring.

Would be interesting to see how many points in close game were actually won by those 12 goals from corners that City and Liverpool scored...

apologies if this has been covered already but what is our corner to goal conversion ratio, it must be the worst in the league

Here's the discussion from earlier on this season.

this set piece that earned RM the CL cup - look at false run by ronaldo, and bale fending off the defenders, and expecting the header.

like Bale himself... he came with promise of being free kick specialist, scored one against Arsenal and then every single free kick after was dog****. It wasnt until his last season with us that he started becoming a "threat" from free kicks. That's 6 years.
