The Right Back Thread

I think this position deserves its own thread.

Another name into the hat.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has asked the club to consider an approach for Barcelona right-back Nelson Semedo, according to a report.

Semedo has been influential for Barca so far this term, having appeared in all but three of the club’s La Liga games as well as making four Champions League outings.

However, according to Don Balon, the Portugal international has found it hard and continues to be castigated by the fans, his teammates, coaches and the Spanish press on most days.

As such, it is claimed that Semedo is happy to seek a way out of Catalonia and Mourinho is reportedly aware of the situation and is keen to swoop for his compatriot, with his price set at €30m at

Right-back is a key area where Mourinho reportedly wants to strengthen following the loss of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid in the summer, with one report claiming that the manager has made it a priority for the January transfer window.

Neither Serge Aurier nor Kyle Walker-Peters are said to convince Mourinho over their ability in the role and he has now asked Spurs to consider Semedo as a new addition.

What’s more, Don Balon adds that Mourinho is prepared to offer Semedo a “good” salary, given that he would be able to adapt seamlessly to the Premier League.

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde will reportedly not be against the player leaving the Camp Nou, with Lionel Messi taking the same view.

Lol @ “Messi takes the same view”!

30m euros for Semedo seems like a good deal though. Only complaint would be he seems v attacking, but then our RBs seem to get a lot of time on the ball high up the pitch.

Would any of us really be fussy?

An actual RB, fit, played in a top league? we can afford = yes, thank you very much

According to El Desmarque, Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho wants to sign Joao Cancelo from Emirates Marketing Project in the January transfer window.

It has been reported by the Spanish publication that Mourinho has already spoken to the 25-year-old right-back, who is not happy with his current situation at City.

The Portugal international joined City from Juventus in the summer of 2019 and cost the Citizens £25.9 million in transfer fee taking into account the amount they got by selling Danilo to the Italian giants, as reported by BBC Sport.

According to WhoScored, Cancelo - who can also operate as a winger - has played just 577 minutes in the Premier League and 388 minutes in the Champions League for Pep Guardiola’s side so far this season.

El Desmarque has claimed that Juventus and Portugal international forward Cristiano Ronaldo warned the right-back against joining City, and predicted that he would struggle to get much playing time at the Etihad Stadium.

Good signing for Tottenham Hotspur?

Cancelo is a very good right-back who would be a very good signing for Tottenham, given his obvious quality and experience of playing for big clubs such as Juventus, Valencia and Inter Milan.

However, City manager Guardiola may not want to let go of a player who can be important for his team in the middle of the season.

Well thats a new one. Also - GREAT name for a defender

Just rename the thread to "Right Backs that are Jorges Mendes clients"
It's does feel like Daniel has got into bed with the devil
But it might just work.
It will certainly stop players playing us Vs others.
And stop agents shafting us. Better to get 70% shafted by Mendes on every deal than dingdonged around and 100% shafted all the other time!

I wonder how much of that delayed some deals in the past.

Mourinho is a high maintenance Redknapp without the free flowing football.

But with the shining stuff

I cannot see Cancelo leaving City, they have a defensive crisis as it is and moving on 1 of only 2 first team Right backs half way through the season would not be a smart move.

Depends on how much we spend. Cancelo is in our price range and his value hasn't gone up since he arrived. And ... Given their difficulties I epect City to spend even more now, not less.

I trust that Levy has got our budget on a new level and is scheming some new fangled sponsorship deals and genius payment options to surprise us in the next transfer window.

There are no flying attacking right backs that defend as well. It really depends on how the team is set up.
Mourinho knows how to lock up a defence. I think Mourinhos preference is for a strong defensive mid and attacks down the wings.
