Watched the last quarter of the Atletico game and have to say that Falque played quite maturely... Will Tim recall him?

The majority of Premier League sides have changed their name since they were founded including Manchester United and Saudi Sportswashing Machine who were Newton Heath and Stanley respectively.

However, a small handful have kept their founding name.

Bale woes compared to Woodgate
January 28, 2014

Gareth Bale's latest injury troubles have led the Spanish media to draw comparisons with Jonathan Woodgate and his troubled spell at Real Madrid.

Gareth Bale suffered a thigh injury in the warm-up and was forced out of the game against Getafe.

Woodgate joined Madrid from Leeds for 13.4 million pounds in August 2004, but regular injuries meant the England international defender made just 14 appearances for the La Liga giants before leaving for Middlesbrough two years later.

Bale’s situation looks nowhere near as serious at the moment, however the former Tottenham player has completed 90 minutes in just nine of 30 competitive games since joining for 101 million euros last summer, with a new problem arising each time it seems he is about to get back to full fitness.

The Wales captain’s latest knock came when he was kicked in the groin early in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Granada at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Although he played on for over half an hour he was eventually substituted at half-time.

The club have issued no medical statement confirming any injury, but Bale subsequently missed training on Sunday and Monday. Coach Carlo Ancelotti then ruled him out of Tuesday’s Copa del Rey game with Espanyol at the Bernabeu, trying to play down the seriousness of the problem, while not giving any exact details of what was wrong beyond "discomfort" and a "problem with his left leg."

Such uncertainty has been a feature of Bale’s five months at Madrid, with issues often described as small problems with his left thigh leading to absences of a few weeks. A knock picked up in training in December which Ancelotti first dismissed as minor, for instance, kept him out of action for over three weeks.

AS points out that Madrid’s medical statements on his injuries are often late, vague and not signed by any individual member of the club’s medical staff. “There are some who have started to see parallels with Woodgate,” the report claims ominously.

The root of these 'thigh' muscle injuries is thought to be an issue with Bale’s back. Marca claimed in October that he had a serious spinal problem which would require surgery -- and that the club knew about his but went ahead with the world record signing anyway.

At that point Carlos Diez, chief of Medical Services Sanitas-Real Madrid, did go public to say that there was an injury, but that he and his colleagues had drawn up a training regime to deal with it.

“What we are doing is developing a programme of preventative recuperation, with the idea that he feels protected and can avoid it getting more serious,” Diez said. “That consists of reinforcing the abdominal and lumbar muscles with preventative exercises.

"This muscular reinforcement works like a kind of girdle or corset on the [spinal] column, so there is no further suffering from the protrusions.”

The success of that programme is now being called into question, although Ancelotti said on Monday that he expects Bale to be available for selection for Madrid’s tough looking La Liga game at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

It looks like Bale has become injury-prone since joining Real. And the Spanish media are already comparing him with Woodgate. He has only himself to blame as he should have stayed with us for 1 more season.

might be he had that injury while with us; if so then masterstroke of a deal from levy

You could be right. I've watched a good few of Bales's RM outings and he doesn't look like he's fit to me. He seems to have lost that explosiveness which made him so good for us. In the matches I have seen he's been peripheral to the action mostly. It could be injury related or physiological, I don't know, but the RM fans must be wondering what all the fuss was about.

How does Bale have himself to blame for being injured? Moving away from our medical department was probably a wise move.

Comparing him to Woodgate is ridiculous, he made a grand total of 13 apps in 3 seasons and Bale's already on 30 in 5 months. Using the fact that Madrid's statements about his injuries have been vague is laughable, are there any clubs that put out medical documents specifically stating what's gone wrong with a player's fitness when they miss a game? Astounding journalism.

Ridiculous comparison to Woodgate, but Bale has suffered a lot of injuries so far this season, which should worry Real. He has delivered, though:

Bale outperforms Messi in La Liga

Both players have been plagued by injury in the first half of the season, but statistics show that the Welshman has been the better player domestically so far this term

Gareth Bale will miss Real Madrid's Copa del Rey clash against Espanyol on Tuesday evening as a result of a minor calf injury, with Carlo Ancelotti refusing to risk the Welshman ahead of Sunday's Liga clash against Athletic Bilbao.

The 24-year-old has been a big part of Madrid's revival in recent months and the Italian will be desperate to ensure the €100 million man is fully fit as los Blancos look to maintain their hunt for the title.

Bale has already found the net eight times in La Liga, as well as racking up eight assists - a remarkable tally given that the winger has played only 921 minutes so far, meaning he has been involved in a goal every 57 minutes.

Bale's stats are all the more impressive if you compare them to those of Barcelona star Lionel Messi, with the Madrid man outperforming the Argentine in La Liga.

Messi impressed in Barcelona's win over Malaga at the weekend, notching up one assist as he guided his side to a comfortable win, but is still three assists short of Bale's eight, while they have both found the net on eight occasions.

Like Bale, the 26-year-old has missed a number of games due to injury this term, yet the prolific forward has actually been on the pitch for over an hour more, playing 985 minutes to the Welshman's 921.

Admittedly, the Barcelona man has been the more efficient of the two in all competitions, but there's no denying Bale's impact domestically has been immense, even if his performances in January have been slightly disappointing compared to his excellent figures over the entire 2013-14 campaign to date.

Although Bale sits third in the Madrid goalscoring charts, he has created more goals than any of his team-mates, and featured in just 55 per cent of Madrid's games since making his debut against Villarreal (1433 out of 2610 minutes), a number that will drop further following his absence against Espanyol.

These figures mean Bale is only Madrid's 12th most-used player so far this season, behind players such as Marcelo, Isco, Alvaro Arbeloa and Dani Carvajal, who have all missed plenty of action, too.

The winger featured for the full 90 minutes on just nine occasions, six of which have come in La Liga, making his performances all the more remarkable.
