The "Official" 2013/14 Other teams matches thread

Amazing the players Germany can bring on, especially with the likes of Schweinsteiger, Gundogan, Oezil, Mueller, Neuer, Gomez etc not even getting on the field.

Were just light years behind. Watching trash like Henderson running round in the shirt really is just filth.

I think its getting to me more than it usually would because i'm having to listen to the German commentator prattle on about how rubbish England are and how bleak and dreadful the future looks for the national team (which is all true of course).

I'm seriously considering going on the sick tomorrow. I'm gonna get it in the neck big time.

England's team was experimental. It was a friendly. They only scored one goal because Smalling is a reserve.

Germany have talented players but so do we. Just heard Adrian give the stat of 6 wins in a row at Wembley.

Dodgy curries in Germany?

I was not that unhappy with the loss. Andros is an international the way Lennon never will be.

I liked Lallana and Barkley's confidence. Wheelchair will never pass to AT, will he? There is something wrong about him.

I thought Walker did more good things than bad. The pundits showed his lack of passing opps which forced the bad passes.

That is obviously not a side that is likely to win the WC.

But great players win trophies, not always great teams.

England have at least 4 great players.

Well done to Lloris for helping France to qualify for the WC. But watching the last 15 mins, it was nervy like watching a Spurs match. Just imagine, if Lloris had let in that injury-time shot into goal, he would have been public enemy no.1 in France, just like Ginola was in 1994.

Traditionally, Spurs players have always been unlucky when it comes to playing in the WC. I think, as of now, the only Spurs players confirmed to be starting the WC will be Paulinho for Brazil, Lloris for France and Vertonghen and Dembele for Belgium. Can see players like Walker and Townsend having a part but not sure if they will start for England.

Is there really such a dearth of English talent at the moment that were actually reduced to a central midfield pairing of Henderson and Cleverly. That is actually disgusting. What an absolutely vile midfield. Hideous and quite honestly an embarrassment.

LOL I see your point, and that did make me laugh. I would say that the quality for the squad is not really Roy's fault though. He's doing the best he can.

I think we do have the makings of a good team, we just clearly don't have the depth of Germany. But in the World Cup anything could happen and if we keep players fit we could do well.

Jagjielka, Cole, Gerrard, Townsend, Rooney, Strurridge...maybe Wheelchair....we do have a crux of good players. But I see what you're saying.

Really?? Great players? At least 4?

I can't see a single one who is good enough to win a WC single-handed a la Maradona.
I can't see 2 or 3 truly world class players there in terms of age or ability now. Gerrard and Cole are past their peaks as is Lampard. Rooney is the stand out but won't/can't do 3 or 4 knock-out games ina row. Sturridge glimpses of potential but I don't believe is the real deal. And Wheelchair still flatters to deceive via a media ****-fest but has still yet to put in a performance that makes me go "Wow". The defenders are all fairly average.

Who are your "at least 4" great players? The team is mainly journeymen and 1 low-grade master Wayne.

Dembele hardly features in the Belgium squad at present, I think he's had a handful of sub appearances this year.

I'll give you walker, Townsend and at a push Defoe, but whose the 4th great England player?!

Townsend has been Englands best player by a mile.
He really was, I'm a bit surprised there's not been more fanfare for him in this thread. I just don't see what it is that people don't like about him? He's single handedly brought back my interest and enjoyment in watching England again these last 4 games.

Looking around on other football forums, strangely it's Townsend who is getting all of the criticism from yesterday. I honestly don't understand why, from where I was sitting everything good that England did went through Townsend, not every single move came off for him but generally he used the ball well, worked England into good positions and only although he's usually "shot-happy" he only took a couple yesterday(one of which hit the post). I don't think it's me being biased either, I could see that Walker was rubbish so I'm a little confused. I thought Townsend and Rooney worked really well together and it was Sturridge who kept ****ing everything up.

For some reason Townsend will always get more than his fair share of criticism. Even sites like Football 365 had a campaign against him when he first got called up. He doesn't fit the vogue image of what a 'good' footballer is, in that they play clever intricate passes Barca style. He'd almost be forgiven if he was a pure 'get to the byline' winger (even if he does do it a significant amount of times) but because he likes to cut in and shoot, he's branded as a one trick pony. Doesn't matter how good he is, how good his touch is, how good he is at driving the team forward or receiving the ball in tight spaces...he will have this label.

Bale would have had it too but because he scored a ridiculous amount of goals he is forgiven...which is fair enough. But for some reason because Townsend isn't Bale all of his good stuff gets ignored and any slight loss of possession gets magnified as proof he is merely a one trick pony.

Couldn't agree more BoL, his great attribute of being so direct and driving the team forward is being used to beat him with, don't understand it personally.

You even saw last night him moving quite intelligently, popping up through the centre and using the ball well there too. A really bizarre swell of negative opinion around him I must say.

Experimental - who do we have to come in? Milner, Lampard, Wellbeck, Cahill ??? Not what I would call world beaters. Our midfield was non-existent (Cleverly proving the point that every England team has to have at least one over-hyped useless Man U player in it) and the players copming on didn't improve it. Lallana looked totally outclassed and our forward line kept coming back to collect the ball and leaving a massive gap up front once we got the ball.

As for the talent in Germany this was a team without it's #1 or #2 Goalkeeper (in fact a 33 year old debutant), all their usual starting midfielders (Ozil, Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Muller) and no Gomez, , Klose or Podolski up front. Had they all played (if fit and available) imagine how many they would have beaten us by, they never got out of 2nd gear the whole match and were happy to pass it around us in the knowledge we didn't have the quality to get it back.
