The new, new manager thread - Pt 3

Tottenham Hotspur ready to move for Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino if Carlo Ancelotti says no

Spurs will approach Southampton for their next manager if Real Madrid boss decides against move to White Hart Lane

Tottenham Hotspur will make one final check to see whether Carlo Ancelotti is interested in becoming their new manager before making their move for Southampton’s Mauricio Pochettino next week.

The Spurs board decided on Friday to approach Southampton to speak to Pochettino. Their only alternative would be if Ancelotti leaves Real Madrid following Saturday’s Champions League final but that does not appear likely.

The attraction of returning to London would interest Ancelotti but his wage demands are likely to be prohibitive. The Italian, nevertheless, has a good relationship with Spurs’ director of football, Franco Baldini.

Pochettino has been Tottenham’s first choice since the club decided not to take up the 12-month option on Tim Sherwood’s contract.

Spurs have spoken to Rafael Benitez’s representatives in the knowledge that the Napoli coach would like to return to England but there has been no contact for more than two weeks.

Similarly, Spurs are adamant that they have had no dealings with Ajax over coach Frank de Boer – despite his claims of an approach in April – since they inquired about him at the end of November when it became apparent Andre Villas-Boas might be sacked.

Pochettino, 42, is the kind of dynamic training-ground coach Spurs want and a crucial factor in their interest in him is the hope that he will be able to get the best out of the foreign players, notably fellow Argentine Erik Lamela, who were acquired last summer. Spurs would have to pay compensation of £2 million for Pochettino and would insist that he speaks English to the media. Despite continuing to use a translator, Pochettino does speak good English.

Southampton remain hopeful that Pochettino, who has a year left on his deal, will sign a new contract.

Apparently the guy in the Poch pic is a club translator of ours, his name is Roberto Balbontin.

Good find Rossi

I'm starting to get pretty excited about the Pochettino era now

"Pochettino, he's a yiddo" - we've even got a vacant song for him

Definitely Poch's sons in the training ground photo:

And then here's the translator/liaison guy from the photo (in Spurs clobber):

Think that's pretty conclusive now

I think that you are right that it is him but it is possible that the photo was taken somewhere else

It doesn't really matter though does it. Whether it's Hotspur Way, White Hart Lane, Runnymede Hotel, the store manager's office at the new Sainsbury's or Joe Lewis Island east of Bahamas, Poch in an informal environment with one of our liaison officers tells me that the job has been his for some time.

Perhaps we are just waiting till after the CL final (say Monday) to announce it to get full media exposure?

I dont think the guy looks anything like the translator. Then again, it's a poor shot on a CCTV camera

Apologies, I had missed the significance of the liaison guy. I suppose that it is difficult to give a definite identity on it being him with such a poor resolution photo but it is certainly intriguing.

Hope it his him. Had enough of thinking abut who is best for us. There are good arguments for all the 3 potentials. Poch is good enough for me. Has PL and La Liga experience. Can work with youth. Plays nice football. Is young. Good looking. He would be hungry for success coming to the biggest club in his managerial career. Desperate to win things. Has a huge squad to work with. We are a match made in football heaven.

The hairline/forehead dimensions and little mohawk thing look about right. The nose and jawline are hard to compare with the different angles.

I think it was someone who knew Balbontin who originally identified him.

I remember all the debates like this when Ade got photoed in a shop with BAE a few days before we signed him in summer 2011.

the bloke in the cctv image looks like some Bulgarian vagrant who wandered in off the street

(supposed liaison officer)

I suppose that it is also possible that all of the candidates are being given a nose around the facilities
