When there was only one place in the European Cup and a place in the Cup Winners Cup both used to mean a lot.
 
Winners of the CL should get a wildcard entry into the following season's FA cup.

Bayern Munich 3rd round draw away at Woking in January =P~

2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the league have playoff for final CL spot.
Would see all teams going flat out to win the cups but still keep the league competitive after league winners had been decided.
Perhaps also relegate 19th and 20th then 18th, 17th, 16th and 15th have a relegation playoff.
Dead rubber games are frustrating at this stage when results matter to other teams..... And everyone loves a playoff!

What happens if you win fa cup and finish 2nd-5th?

Or if the same team wins fa cup and league?

Interesting idea, you could feaisbly have 16/17 teams still having something to play for come the last day

All well and good but by giving the 4th qualification place for the CL to the cup winners your basically telling everyone apart from City Chelsea and United to forget about the league and focus on a knock out competition - if we were to get knocked out of the cup away to City in the 3rd round then our season would be over by January !

It's a cup at the end of the day, it should be an end unto itself - if teams are no longer focused on winning it then that's just the way modern football is going - either look at the bigger picture (ie the premier league and champions league) or just accept it.

Then the next highest placed team could have a bye in the playoff semi final or perhaps give playoff position to the next place eg. 6th. Haven't got exact details sorted but I think it would give all competitions an extra edge to it with more games results becoming more important at all stages of the season.

what happens when our co-officiants drop and we lose a CL place because we've had too many 'poor' teams qualify via the cup wins over say a decade?


best way i can see it working, if you really had to change the system, would be for 1st,2nd,3rd to get it via the league and 4th, 5th and the two cup winners go in to a play off - even then it's just a waste of time as more often than not 1st-5th will win the cups if they knew there was CL qualification at the end of it.
 
managed to catch the second half in a bar, the celebrations from wigan showed what it should be and could be again,
 
thread title says it all. the wonder of the FA Cup where david and goliath scenarios get repeated again and again.

bring back the old format cup winners cup!
