The Goon Thread

Read pieces by journalists writing for both the Mirror and the Sun.

I agree with you that banter is fine, but choosing the time and place is part of it. The away fans were already riled up and Walcott taunting them sent some of them further off the edge, the thing is with football fans is there will always be a bit of a pack mentality, one person goes and others may follow, especially when emotions are running high. You don't **** them off any further unless you are fully prepared for the consequences. I'm not defending the coin throwers but I am saying that if you antagonise a volatile situation then things will get worse. We had that bellend run on and try to punch Frank Lampard a while back whilst he celebrated with the away fans, no doubt he goaded the Spurs fans a little bit but it only takes a little to push some people over the edge.

I personally think that highly-paid professionals should be held to a higher standard than fans with regard to goading. All the ex-pros on the radio and telly went on about all the stick players get from the fans and that they should be able to give some back, but as Cochise pointed out there is a pack mentality (read Bill Buford's amazing Among the Thugs) and Walnutt did nothing to make things better at that time.

one day there will be blood shed between rival club fans

the internet is peppered with arsenal players encouraging this tribalism - they will be blamed for fanning the flames!

She is cute - I would

To be honest I dont really care what he is holding up and dont mind players getting involved in some rivalry type banter.

I think it's good. Should be stuck up in the changing room when we play them and Theo's 2-0. Let's see how that motivates us

This. I want to see rivalry. I don't mind Arsenal players acting like that, it's all part of the North London rivalry. I don't know many Arsenal fans, thankfully, but the main Arsenal fan that I chat with always mocks Spurs. He'll turn to me and say 'enjoy the Europa League'.

That seems to be the height of his comments, so it gets a bit tedious. But the point is, I'd prefer he said comments like that than appreciated our club and said how wonderful it was. Rivalry is so important in football and acts like this are just part of that rivalry.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Juan Mata's possible move from Chelsea to Manchester United lacks 'fairness'.

It is understood that the Spaniard will move to Old Trafford, with reports suggesting that the Blues have accepted a £40m offer from the Premier League champions.

However, Wenger believes it is unfair that Chelsea are selling Mata to United, particularly as the two clubs have played each other twice in the Premier League this season.

"I am surprised. Juan Mata is a great player and they sell a great player to a direct opponent," Wenger said.

"Chelsea have already played twice against Man United, they could have sold him last week.

"I think if you want to respect the fairness for everybody, this should not happen.

"I can understand completely what Chelsea are doing, and they do not make the rules, but maybe the rules should be a bit more adapted for fairness."

Arsenal, who are two points ahead of third-placed Chelsea, could face Mata when United travel to the Emirates on February 12.

How exactly does he want to make it fair? Jan transfers aren't allowed to play until next season? Or just not allowed to play against arsenal?

I share Wenger's sentiments, because Mourinho would never sell Mata to another PL club if it didn't benefit Chelski. Which it will, because Mata won't be enough to make United title challengers this year, but he'll strengthen them when they face ****, City and Liverpool.

Wenger's quotes smell of sour grapes though. Selling Mata to United is well within the rules, and isn't very controvercial at all, IMO. The problem lies in the fact that Chelski has been allowed to stockpile half of Europe's talented midfielders, but that's a different story.

To be fair he has a point

A. Cole
Toure
Van Persie
Clichy
Nasri
Adebayor

None of these were sold to a rival team, they went to teams that one trophies :D

Well he's also in favour of a winter break so maybe he would be happy to play 19 matches, have a combined winter break/transfer window then play the remaining 19 matches.

I don't think it that stupid an idea. Although his timing shows he is just being self-serving rather than addressing the issue impartially.

We have players cup-tied if they played a single game in a cup for someone else so why not have players being league tied?
You can only play each team twice a season in the league, once home and once away, no matter which club you are playing for.

Fairly easy to work out, possibly reduce the already low value of the January window and maybe even reduce pressure on managers as the window wouldn't be seen as such a last chance salvation shot.

Whinger didnt like it because Mata went to another team other than Arsenal. Whether or not Mata would go to Arsenal is a different matter but the fact is, it is simply bad sportsmanship as has been shown by Whinger year after year. I havent seen any other manager complaining about a player going from one club to another!

It's smart, but no more unfair than UTD buying a different player of that calibre. Mata won't be playing for Chelsea anymore so he has no reason to play better against the title chasing teams.
