The Goon Thread

If you are planning to stick dembele out where he isn't suited I'd say Chadli was just as essential.

IMO paulinho was not essential considering the wealth of midfield talent we have.

We needed goals from midfield which Paulinho will hopefully add, although you could also say the same for Chadli. Dembele doesn't get enough goals, ditto Lennon, Sig.

My point is, of all the signings we made, the others were more important, that's my view anyway.

We needed Chadli as soon as Bale stopped playing out the left.

Sig does alright with goals.

It's a fair view, i'd rate Erikson as a much lower priority than Chadli though. I think Lamela will be the creativity behind the striker, whilst bagging a few goals, with Townsend the direct threat on the right.

Chadli seems more likely to add creativity too really, though that is based on a relatively small sample of games.

To be fair Eriksen is meant to be one of the highest rated yound midfielders in Europe. I could see us playing him, Lamela and Townsend.

I think they will have Yohan Cabaye by Monday.

If they sign Cabaye then it will be the complete opposite of what Wenger has preached about not panicking. He is a clone of the sorts of central midfielders that they already have. What they need is a strong physical presence first of all and then they need a player who is happy to sacrifice himself almost and sit just in front of the back line and protect what is in my opinion, a vulnerable defence.

Thats two central midfielders, none of whom are like Cabaye.

Add to that the fact that they need a top class goalkeeper, a commanding centre half and another forward. To my mind, they are not bringing in that amount of players on Monday.

I tweeted earlier that I think the biggest signing they will make will be Kaka on loan for a year with a view to a permanant which they won't take up because of the cost or the player getting a better offer in 12 months time. If they get Cabaye as well then good for them but it most certainly won't target the many issues they have within the squad, least of all, sheer numbers.

They will be in the same position they have been for years - battling it out for 4th place with poor results generally against the challenging sides in the top 6 whilst remaining flat track bullies against the minnows. They will be battling it out for 3rd place in the group they have been given in the Champions League and as for the domestic cups, pure pot luck.

In the spirit of conversation Mumorn, why are you so sure they will win tomm? Is there a tactical reason, or are you just looking to indemnify yourself against potential disappointment? Because honestly, when I look at the two potential starting line-ups and subsequent benches, I see no reason that we will lose whatsoever so long as we don't have an unexplainable capitulation/suffer **** refereeing/diving and bitching of the usual quality from the likes of Wheelchair and Cazorla?

They raise there game against us. They play great football and Wenger always gets them geared up for this. Even when we've been on form and looked better than them, they always manage to beat us, regardless. Who could forget after beating Saudi Sportswashing Machine 5-0 and in form going to the Emirates and losing 5-2. They won't lose 2 home games in a row and we've won away 1 in the last 20 years against them.

Saying that, anything can happen in a NLD.

Oh GHod no, not this please:

I have a really horrible feeling they're going to make 3 big late purchases. Arsene was awfully chirpy today.

Nah. They'll end up with one or two players, one of which will be bought to try and appease the crowd. The only outside bet purchase I could see them making would be Hulk, simply because of the Russian connection they could foster, but that would be such an absurd purchase for them I'd almost welcome it.

Draxler? If they pay 60 mill+ for him, it makes Wenger look like the single biggest hypocrite and tosser of all time. You have to feel sorry for him. he doesn't like to operate in full view, and there's that twerp Gaziedas telling everyone in May that they had a 'war-chest' i.e. "come on folks, charge us 20% over the odds AND agents, come and **** us on wages and incentives while you're at it"...it's pathetic. Whether they needed to upgrade their squad as much as we did remains in debate, but they certainly need three players, a goalkeeper worth something, a world class CB and another striker (plus now due to injuries a midfielder) and as of now they will be left foraging the s****s. I was discussing this with a gooner and he, quite rightly, was appalled not so much at who hasn't been bought but at the shoddy and pathetic manner their boardroom has behaved for some time. My deepest fear would be that Dein decides to step back in...

That game has been discussed to death mate, but we all know they didn't win it more than we gave them every opportunity to take us. And they did obviously. Last season was unfortunate in my book...yes, they will raise their game and sadly the press will have helped that along, but I just see a very strong, steely and cold determination in our side to get the job done. I don't think it will be pretty but I think we will win. But we must avoid the dark-arts which is their diving and whinging. Oliver will have to be very, very strong early doors...

Tony Adams admits he told Arsenal not to buy Gareth Bale when he was at Southampton

The BBC’s Football Focus met up with two Spurs legends, Les Ferdinand and Ledly King, and two Gunners legends, Tony Adams and Ian Wright, on their Saturday show before the massive game of the weekend in the capital in the Premier League.

During the segment Tony Adams told the story of how he advised Arsenal not to buy Gareth Bale when the soon-to-be Real Madrid star was at Southampton.

Adams told the BBC:

By the way… I went and saw Gareth Bale for Southampton and I said ‘no’ for Arsenal. I’ll admit it live on screen!

Adams elaborated on the story in The Sun saying he told Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger not to sign Gareth Bale because he thought he wasn’t up to much as a defender.

In fairness, at the time he probably would have been right. Arsenal would have just sold Ashley Cole and Gareth Bale would not have been the right player to come in and replace him. And despite what Harry always said.......is Gareth Bale really a Left Back?

I'm going to back Mumorn up here. I honestly fear Rose is going to get torn to shreds by Walcott. He's nowhere near as good as scum fans think he is, but he's definitely improved and is a much more potent goal threat. I also fear Giroud winning the aerial battles just like he did at WHL last season, even though the headers he won lead to nothing luckily. For those reasons, I would play Vertonghen at left back and Kaboul centre half with Dawson.

But the main reason I think we will lose is we have given so many putrid, gutless performances at that ground over the years, it's somehow ingrained in the club. Some of the 3-0 drubbings under Jol were particularly spineless. Not to forget last season's capitulation after Adebayor's brainless tackle, a game which we were in complete control of.

Don't get me wrong, we've got the players to win, but they STILL have a better mentality than we do and I need to see us beat them consistently home and away and actually finish above them before I get to the stage when I can say confidently that we will win at the Emirates.

Btw, we have some divers in our team do, every team does these days.

What the hell is a Draxler?

Have to say that i would play Rose over Vertonghen for this one. Walcott is not a very intelligent footballer, the main asset he does have is his pace, followed by a decent finish, and i would back Rose to match his pace far more than Vertonghen. Vertonghen was poor defensively when he played as a LB, he was good offensively however that is not what this situation calls for. He would not have the pace to keep Walcott quiet.

Not sure that we'll win, but i wouldn't predict them to win either. We have a solid midfield. Think the most likely outcome will be a draw really. Which would be a decent result.
