Tottenham move closer to signing Brazil striker Leandro Damião

...

Tottenham, meanwhile, continue to stand their ground over Luka Modric to the mounting frustration of the player and Real Madrid, whom he has made it clear that he wants to join. Modric is training away from Villas-Boas's first-team squad but the club refuse to sanction his release for less than £40m. Madrid, who consider him to be over-valued, are threatening to turn their attention elsewhere.

Or they could have written the following ...

"Real Madrid, meanwhile, continue to stand their ground over Luka Modric to the mounting frustration of Tottenham, who have agree to help facilitate the players move to the club he wants to join. Modric is training away from Villas-Boas's first-team squad after the club agreed to his release for £40m. However, Madrid don't value Modric highly enough and may turn their attention elsewhere."

But that's not what they want to happen, we're just Spurs and should bow to the demands of mighty Real Madrid.

Definitely. We really missed a trick there.

The August window of that season we struggled due to the Young Boys game meaning we werent in the Group Stages, but it was the Jan window we should have struck while we were 'hot'

Thats exactly what I said at the time. Riding high in 3rd, a quality striker buy at that time would have almost certainly guaranteed CL this season. Look at all the money we have "lost" by not qualifying. It is really heartbreaking.

Agreed wholeheartedly - the few million we probably 'saved' during some hard-balls bargaining deal is nothing compared to the 50m+ CL windfall.

Lucas Moura confirms he is likely to join Paris Saint-Germain, dashing Man Utd's hopes of signing the Brazilian

The Journalist

There is a meeting with Modric and his representatives again today.

Now this is hard to explain and I don’t know how much authenticity can be placed on this. Consequently I class this as RUMOUR.
It is somewhat obvious that Moutinho is the favourable replacement for Modric. However I have been informed that Tottenham have made enquiries about Alex Witsel as an alternative option. As far as I’m aware it has not gone anywhere past an initial enquiry and I don’t know where he ranks on Tottenham’s transfer list.

Am sure that had we not had to finance the stadium we would have done

Best case scenario

- we keep Modric
- Damiao signs
- Ade signs on loan, City help with wages

Medium case scenaro

- we sell Modric
- we bring it Moutinho
- Ade signs on loan

Worst case scenario

- we sell Modric
- we use the money (much like in the past) for sweet fudge all
- we sign Owen on a 4 year deal

Spurs classic scenario

- we sell Modric
- we replace him with Jordan Henderson
- we sign Darren Bent on a 6 month emergency loan with an option to 'have' Heskey

My expected scenario:
- Sell Modric, sign a relatively high profile replacement a la Moutinho
- Sign Ade
- Maybe sign another young or random forward on loan

For the life of me I cant understand why we didnt make the move for a quality striker then. Was it Levy or was it Rednapp? We should have gone balls out for the man/men we wanted then. Now we are in danger of fishing in the pool for complete unknowns as we dont have either the CL transfer money available, wage structure, or indeed CL competition to tempt a top class striker to join us.

The regrettable facts of life are that the names mentioned in this thread are frankly now unattainable and we have to find some relative unknown striker and take a huge gamble on him turning into a Berbs.

This has been the case ever since we finished 4th the first time.

The following January we could have strengthened to ensure we finish 4th again - we didn't and finished 5th after a collapse in the end

Then the following January we could have strenghtened to ensure we finish 3rd and avoid the Chelsea circus. - we didn't and missed out again after a collapse in the end

the money is not there

I think AVB took the job knowing there was little money to spend. For a long time there has been a sell before you can buy policy and it looks like it is continuing

new name to chew over
...............................

The Luka Modric to Real Madrid circus rumbles on and the Spanish press seem to have started looking at Tottenham's potential recruits as they search for ways the deadlock may be resolved. AS say that Medo Kamara has come into the picture after being recommended to the club by Avram Grant.

Who? Medo Kamara is a 24 year old who plays for Partizan Belgrade as a deep midfielder, he's a Sierra Leone international. Kamara is a defensive midfield player and moved to the Serbian club from Finnish side HJK, a club where he impressed so much he was named the league's best player in his final season.

AS say that Avram Grant is a friend of Daniel Levy and has told him Medo Kamara would be a great addition. However, Andre Villas Boas is still keen on Porto's Moutinho despite the high cost. Levy, so say AS, is trying to persuade him that Kamara is the better option - the Partizan player will be much cheaper and only has one year left on his current contract.

The Spanish press care because they state that if Levy can get Villas Boas to move from Moutinho to Kamara, who will be around half the price, it will help Real Madrid negotiate a lower value for Luka Modric but if Villas Boas has his heart set on Moutinho then the situation will rumble on because Levy will want even more if he's going to be held to ransom by Porto.

Keeping up? It's a new name for Spurs fans to look at and they may be worried that Levy, if AS are correct, is trying to persuade Andre Villas Boas to go for cheaper options in the transfer window.

If we have the money now (without CL funds) how come we didnt have it in January?

Do you mean for the stadium? If so, then if you're approaching lenders then they will look at your business plan, any contingent liabilities (eg deferred parts of transfer fees), contracted costs (eg contracted wages), likely other cash outflows in future etc. We may therefore not have had the cash for transfers in Jan and, personally, I have quite doubtful whether we have much cash at all for transfers now
