VdV couldn't dribble. Dembele can.

Modric couldn't score (much). Gylfi can.

Dempsey can do both really well.

This idea that we've got no one 'good' in is rubbish. Players are simply not just 'good' or 'bad'. They're good at some things, woeful at others. We've gotten rid of a couple of players who were brilliant at some things. We've replaced them with a few players who are brilliant at other things. Is that a trade-off that will work? Time will tell. But I'd prefer that we did that as opposed to signing Moutinho for 22 million quid and 150k a week because he fits the nebulous 'good' standard we expect all signings to have.

Incidentally, though, all three players we've signed have lit up the Premier League. Moutinho has averaged a couple of goals a season, and a few assists, in the Liga sagres. Just saying, mate.

I can understand what you're saying and where your coming from, I don't think the players we have signed are 'bad' as you say above, but its just my opinion we are weaker overall as a squad. The talk on the board here at the min seems to be that we have a squad that can challenge for top 6. IMO this time last year we had a squad that was capable of challenging for 3rd.

As you say, only time will tell, but I'm not particularly optimistic at the mo, I would have been more so had Moutinho signed.

You can't seriously think that sigurdsson has more ability than Modric, dempsey and Dembele have more ability than VDV?

Ask any football fan in the world who they would prefer to have in their team, what would their answer be?

I think they've got more ability at different things. 'Overall' ability is, like I said before, an entirely nebulous concept. To succeed, you need a mix of players with different attributes, not just generally 'good' players.

We've bought specialists at different things. It is up to our manager to use them effectively.

If you asked fans which players they'd rather have, they'll always choose the player with the bigger reputation. I dare say many fans wanted Bentley over Lennon in the summer of 2008. Shows how much we know, I suppose.

So after the dust has settled, we've added six first team players to the squad and received about £18.4m from player trading....

...we didn't get everyone we were after but there's always January.

Ummmm! £18m profit? I wonder where that will go?

GDS was 1m euros (£800K).

We do have January but we all know Levy doesnt do January.

Is he a panic buy because we signed him today and not a week ago? Because we tried for as long as we could to get our primary target? I think we probably got a great deal because we went in after Villa and Liverpool had failed and certainly Dempsey was getting desperate to get out of there.

Yeah, he is.

Sure its a good deal and I rate him, but he's not going to make us much better. I hope I'm wrong.

Frustrating. Replacing our star players (King, Modric, VDV) with players of equal or more ability was obviously going to be extremely difficult. But we haven't addressed the major problems from last season. A decent striker to back up Ade and a wing forward who can chip in with some goals. Yes maybe Dempsey will fall into that category but i can't help but feel he is just an average player who had a very good season, much like a certain David Bentley. No imagination in our purchases and all too reminiscent of Redknapp's "match of the day" scouting. Squad looks really weak.

Hmm....so Moutinho is the difference between 3rd and sixth? Come on, mate. I can understand your disappointment that we didn't get him, but honestly, what more do you expect? Did you think the squad we had in September 2009 would finish fourth? We had Crouch and Defoe as our main men up front, we played Modric on the wing for the majority of the season and had Palacios and Jenas in the centre at times. Yet we did. Come on, mate.
