Son Heung-Min

It is anything but basic, which is why relatively few forwards are capable of receiving the ball with their back to goal and keeping their team possession. It is actually very hard to do. I played in lots of positions (mainly across the midfield) but also full/wing back and even centre back on the odd occasion but the hardest one of all to play was as a number 9 centre forward. Holding the ball up was really hard when you're typically directly up against the biggest, heaviest, most physical player on the opposition team.

Firstly the ball often tends to come from a distance at pace, controlling the ball coming to you at pace is more difficult to start with but the fact it often comes from a distance away also means the defender has the time to react and at the very least get some body contact on you to knock you off balance and controlling a ball off balance is incredibly hard.

Secondly in order to be able to get to the ball first the attacker typically has to go towards the ball, this is especially the case for an attacker like Son who isn't blessed with great strength and physicality who can't plant themselves and lean into the defender like a big physical centre forward can without coming off second best. Controlling a ball on the move like this, still with the defender likely to be in close proximity and making body contact is also difficult and defenders are often able to win the ball before the attacker's second touch when this happens.
True, which is why Son should play a first time layoff and/or collapse and buy a foul IF he receives it with back to goal

Actually got assisted from Perisic today, but what a goal... haven't seen a shot like that from him in a long time but I had a feeling as soon as he hit the ball that it was going into the back of the net.

Seemed to make himself a nuisance to Brighton's attacking players, overall decent performance with a huge impact on the result.

He took sole touches and then did what he did so well…. Curled it round the post

Wasn't going to shoot until PEH told him to.
Suggests he's been lacking confidence or overthinking and trying to put team play ahead of taking a risk. Hopefully today changes that for him.
You can imagine Conte not being happy if someone shoots from range and it doesn't come off.

There was another one just before that he could have taken with his left. Had all the time and space he wanted but laid it off to Perisic. I couldn't believe it.

What a goal though. You can feel the love for him in the ground. He's had a brick season but the majority of the fan base love him.

So watch the video below, about as close to criticism as you will likely ever hear from Son

- Basically saying he's been asked to change his position, come in more centrally (back to goal, crowded by defenders) to let the wingbacks do the far post thing.
- If you look at his 100 goals compilation, a lot more of his goals are actually him arriving on far side of goal (where Conte wanted his WBs) in addition to his classic shoot from diagonal areas of the box.

Honestly, criminal mismanagement of a player who is WC in the right position. Can you imagine having Son being able to arrive on the far side of a cross and thinking .. nah, fudge it, I'd prefer to have Sessegnon there ...

Yup, it is pathetic, and underlines just how poor 3-4-3 is when it ends up squashing a player like Sonny to allow under-par WBs to get extra latitude.

This is precisely where a systems manager (especially one who relies on automations) can disappoint. Son is exceptionally good at some things, and it appears, based on this season, that to force him to play differently is a bad choice. The bit where he says he wasn’t encouraged to shoot from those positions…

Really hope this is the start of 'one of those runs' he goes on where he scores in 4 or 5 on the trot...and in twos. Could really do with him in a goal-scoring glut when we have the 'big week'
