Son Heung-Min

No pericic means more space and faster attacks. Suits both Son and Richy.

Don’t agree with the space thing at all as that would mean Perisic was attacking which he hasnt really done that at all
What is different is Ben Davies does the defensive work but also has the energy and pace (quicker than he looks cliche) to support coming centrally… something Perisic hasn’t done much in the last 3 months

Would we take a punt in Royal left, Porro right? I would!

Been a great player in his day but now he is poor to say the least.
will be interesting to see if kane or son have longer careers (by age). while kane has a range of skills that will help him to change his game, my bet is on son - he seems more athletic and less prone to injury.

Let's see if we change our formation/approach slightly to get Son running in behind. I did notice a few times vs Soton he'd make a run and Perisic hesitate to pass to him down the flanks, probably because he felt the ball wasn't going to stick with Son...

Or that Conte would yell at him and make him run a 5k before the next game for playing with imagination rather than automation.

If Son doesn't spring to life these last games, I'd sell him. He's approaching 30, and I think we should cash in while his stock is still reasonable high.
Try to bring in someone like Kvaratskhelia. He's quality, and only 22.

Time to do it was last summer when he was top scorer. I would have sold him and used the money for Omishen.

One ask -> don't ask Son to receive the ball with his back facing opposition goal, with defender on him, that simple.

seems a pretty basic thing that players at all levels should be comfortable doing

it’s controlling the ball and shielding it

It is anything but basic, which is why relatively few forwards are capable of receiving the ball with their back to goal and keeping their team possession. It is actually very hard to do. I played in lots of positions (mainly across the midfield) but also full/wing back and even centre back on the odd occasion but the hardest one of all to play was as a number 9 centre forward. Holding the ball up was really hard when you're typically directly up against the biggest, heaviest, most physical player on the opposition team.

Firstly the ball often tends to come from a distance at pace, controlling the ball coming to you at pace is more difficult to start with but the fact it often comes from a distance away also means the defender has the time to react and at the very least get some body contact on you to knock you off balance and controlling a ball off balance is incredibly hard.

Secondly in order to be able to get to the ball first the attacker typically has to go towards the ball, this is especially the case for an attacker like Son who isn't blessed with great strength and physicality who can't plant themselves and lean into the defender like a big physical centre forward can without coming off second best. Controlling a ball on the move like this, still with the defender likely to be in close proximity and making body contact is also difficult and defenders are often able to win the ball before the attacker's second touch when this happens.
