Serge Aurier

So let me start with .. I don't want my statement of Aurier being good to be mistaken for me saying Trippier is brick.

To me a big part of Aurier's advantage (somewhat like Walker) is simply who would you prefer to play against, Pace, Physicality and the ability to beat their man generally means most teams would prefer to face Trippier vs either of Walker/Aurier. The fact that in the past we have seen people target Trippier (and Davies), which I don't recall seeing against Rose/Walker only highlights that.

I think Trippier is already 2nd choice (so Poch's view), hopefully he steps up and brings his form/tactics of last season (especially against team that park the bus), which quite honestly is as simple as play off Eriksen to buy space and whoever gets that space put an early cross in. With Dele, Harry and potentially Llorente, lots of opportunity.
On Saturday's evidence, if I was an attacking left sided player I would love to play against Aurier. His positioning was laughable and he constantly dives in.

Arnautavic is a very good left sided player and he barely had a sniff on Saturday.

His positioning was laughable? Strange observation imo. He was caught out maybe once or twice. He is playing in a new team, a new formation, in a new league. Give him a chance. I wonder what is behind you're harsh criticism. Usually you are a very fair and balanced poster.

Both Aurier and Sanchez need to adjust how much they are diving in - they are aggressive which is good and important but both have been caught out in games on average more than any of our defenders of the last two years because of how keen they are.

Pressing is a complicated system play (either all do, or none, otherwise you will get caught out), so yes, they both have adjustment time.

I don't agree with @Finney Is Back, all our FBs run the risk of being caught too high, Davies/Trippier will get caught less because by nature they are more cautious, but both have been caught out before (that is what our 3 at back system covers for).

Again, because I believe one player is superior, doesn't mean the other is brick.

Not so eager with the sliding tackles today! Did well, still a way to go, but good to get that silly red card over and done with.

Hmm, he wasn't great today. Some good moments, some not so great, not faster than that old guy on the left wing, hooked off whilst Trippier stayed on and took over at right back in a 4.

See my post immediately before the one you replied to. I don't doubt he is a good player and will improve as he spends more time in the team, but I thought he was poor on Saturday.

It concerns me a little that he didn't look particularly quick tonight. Maybe he's not operating at 100% yet.

I noticed that - and on Saturday too. Hope it is just that he is not yet fully up to speed. Otherwise, worrying - as everyone seemed to be saying before we bought him that one of his key attributes was his pace.

Rightly subbed and we looked more solid after he was replaced. Right side looked in chaos at the start of the first half. Aurier repeatedly leaving his position to put pressure on their left back leaving an easy pass to their left winger in behind. With no apparent plan behind it. Perhaps that's what he's supposed to do and it was just Alderweireld not doing his job behind Aurier. But as soon as we made the change they stopped getting in behind.

Huffing and puffing going forward with no end product. 15 minutes on the right and Trippier had been involved in two goals.

Needs to improve quickly if he wants to be first choice ahead of Trippier.

Maybe, I hope so. Doesn't seem to adjust well to an opponent being a bit quicker than him though.

Still very early days for the lad. He seems a bit too eager to impress. He'll come good once he settles.

I thought the point of 3 at the back was to cover fbs getting forward.
There's plenty people on here moaning at us being to defensive, imagine the outrage if the t2bs didn't push on.

To clarify my opinion. I'm perfectly happy with him pushing on when we have the ball. Just like I have with full backs in a back 4. But he leaves the back line when we're organized, when the opponents have the ball and when we're not using a high press. Leaving simple passes in behind him.

Saw elsewhere that someone thought Alderweireld had a poor game. He was left in a lot of very difficult situations because Aurier left his position, when we didn't have the ball.

This approach from Aurier probably won us the game against Dortmund. In that game we were pretty timid and sat behind the ball for long periods of the first half, turning over possession on the rare occasions we did win it back. In the 2nd half Aurier was very aggressive in leaving his position to put pressure higher up the pitch, mainly on their LB, to prevent them building higher up the pitch. This was a risky strategy but because we were organised behind him it resulted in Dortmund often surrendering possession cheaply as our DMs and CBs were on the front foot and anticipating the forward passes that came from Dortmund's LB. As a result we had a number of counter-attacks based on winning the ball higher and also had a higher % of possession. I was at the ground with a very good view high up so you could see it was a clear tactic. His boldness actively encouraged our other players to play higher up the pitch.

Aurier has adopted a similar approach in the games since with mixed results. It could be because we've got more of the ball so when we turn it over we aren't in such a structured position as we were against Dortmund.

I think Poch will use it as a tactic - he is playing as a wing back and not a full back after all so he has every right to push higher up the pitch. His recoveries need to be better and he needs to make the right choices of when to press and when to sit (as you have said).

It could well take 6-9 months of playing Poch's system before we see consistent displays from him.

I've seen plenty of positives so far though.
