Serge Aurier

Most of us did; how did the previous managers fail to tell Aurier "stay wary, smell danger, don't dive in, stay on your feet, never give away free kicks"?
He's a different player nowadays.
I doubt he did. It’s a combination of Aurier being more used to this league and that the midfield protect him far better. The difference is Hojbjerg alongside Sissoko. We knew during Poch’s time Sissoko and Aurier complemented each other well. Jose has built on that and added another better DM. This protects the defence and allows them more time.

I can only speak for myself but I always thought Aurier was a player in that he showed he could defend, and that he created things from an attacking perspective. But his big flaw was that he would lose focus and make stupid errors that would let him down and so very much the mental side of things was the issue - for pure technical attributes he always had it for me. And there is no one better to work on the mental side of things than Mourinho. Well done to both for the visible improvement....

He would always try something that you could see would go wrong
He didn’t keep it simple
His header today from initially being wrong side of lacazette was exceptional

Wouldn't describe his involvement to set up the counter attack for the 2-0 goal yesterday as him keeping it simple.

Yes he keeps it simple and safe more of the time now, but that's only part of what's changed. And his quality when he tries something that isn't simple is important.

His tackle wasn’t simple but his pass out was
He passed to the nearest man, rather than some crazy cross field pass
His tackle/block was brilliant

Always rated him as a footballer and as a defender. Just never thought he had a brain. He’s really been on his game this season. Bringing his A game almost every week. I’d like to see him create more assists/chances as he’s a very good crosser of the ball.

He will against some teams and against others he will play the deeper defensive game
I just hope and pray that he keeps this going as it’s a blinding turnaround

We must see things rather differently then.

The way I see it the interception he doesn't have much choice with, he's stretching for the ball and a first touch clearance isn't really a possibility.

He then takes a second touch to control it and plays a pass in between two Arsenal players. There are four Arsenal players looking to close him down there.

The simple option is booting it long, hit and hope to find Kane. We did plenty of that in the game. There was a gap there to find Lo Celso, but it wasn't a big one and it was closing. I have little doubt that had he misplaced that pass it would have been widely criticised as a poor decision.

To me he took the risk and it was a good risk to take. If you think there wasn't a risk to that pass, or that a long ball would somehow be more safe then fair enough.

The long ball IMO would have even the safe option I agree but not the right option
His interception was great IMO and yeah he didn’t have much choice but old serge would have waited for the man and probably flattened them
I thought he was brilliant again

I agree the long ball wouldn't be the right option. That's the point I'm trying to make, he doesn't always keep it simple and safe, but he makes better decisions and overall keeps it simpler more of the time.

Our best piece of business in the summer, alongside Hojbjerg, was to get Doherty in. What a player he has turned Serge into.

He was fudging outstanding tonight. An absolutely exceptional performance. Arguably his best in our shirt but there have been many of those in recent weeks.

I'd have been gladly rid of him a few months ago. Wouldnt trade him for any other right back now.

To me, his shaky first half was because he didn't have Sissoko covering for him as usual. Second half, he did - and then Lucas ahead to provide further cover. That allowed him to go into aggressive challenges and outmuscled Mane instead of standing off him.

He's very dependent on the system to excel.

I really didn't think he was shaky in the first half, to my eyes he was solid throughout and out in a top class performance all game against a too class attacker.

I think the same can be said for a lot of the players right now. Toby, Sissoko, Dier etc. It will be a process to phase them out gradually, but Mourinho will recognise that. We’re on a journey.
