Yea that’s what I meant as well. You can’t sell a player and then say but you’re not allowed to play him against us!

In situations like this the selling club will just hold back signing the papers until after the match. It amounts to the same thing.

Course you can. You can agree the deal just ask he doesn't play in the game on the weekend.
