It's true but it's one factor among many. Mourinho isn't too keen on giving youngsters a chance because he actually leaves a lot of freedom to his forwards and needs players with either exceptional individual skills or able to come up with solutions by themselves and that usually requires some experience - even more so at the level he's coaching at. On the flip side, once they lost touch with the new generations, managers who are adept at working with youngsters are usually done for. If you had a time machine and sent Mourinho back in Belgrade in the 80s, for instance, he'd have no choice but to work with players trained by the club. Maybe he'd still find a way to succeed - who knows?

Now's probably a good time to give a couple of youngsters a chance and Postecoglou looks like the guy to do it, I agree. But no matter what, no matter when, there's no way you can be one hundred percent sure a kid is going to make it at the top. All the coaches I've talked to all said the same: sometimes, a scrappy goal or a lucky pass can completely change a player's career. Mind you, it's true for older players too, see Redknapp's comments after Darren Bent's infamous miss...

Yep. Even when he was more in his prime he never really stayed out wide. He'd mix it up but his best work has always come as wide as the width of the area.

He seems unlikely to thrive in that role.

He also famously said he hasn't got the time yo develop youngsters when winning was the most important thing. So absolutely no middle ground for him, even when losing games

I’ve got no idea why people think the £80m is ‘extra’. IMO it’s pretty clear that the club knew they were going to be selling Kane this window and his likely sale price was factored into our budget which was used to sign Maddison, Vicaro and Van Der Ven.

We perhaps got £20m more than we’d budgeted for Kane so might have about that to spend now (probably why we can’t bring Orban in at present as his club are asking for more than that).

Prob a bit more than 20, as we still must of had 50-70m of the normal budget (despite no europe). But as we've been saying for years now, chopping the dead wood is the key here. Free up Ndombele's 10m a year wages, Hugos similar and suddenly we haev 20m+ extra etc

Rumours are that Levy is still haggling for every penny and holding up sales.

Links to Hojbjerg, Tanganga, Spence, Sanchez, Lloris, N'Dombele but nothing seems concrete yet does it? I'm sure something will have to give soon with only 2 weeks of the window left but the way things are going you have to wonder if the delay in shifting players is gonna cost us some of our targets

You'd think the incentive to get their wages off the books would be the opportunity cost of not getting these deals over the line.

I suppose there is a game if chicken involved with players stating they will 'fight for their place' even if they are obviously not part of the managers plans unless they get a severance payment, especially as most of them will be unlikely to match their wages elsewhere.

If we we are looking at book value, then a couple of on paper hits will easily be offet by the 100% profit on Winks and Kane. Sometimes you can't have it all ways.
 
This Levy narrative is just nonsense though. As though Levy is stupid and wishes to saddle the club with wages and stop us from moving on. The reality is, you need another club to a. want the player and b. be prepared to pay what they earn now, even before c. paying us something.

It helps being a more glamarous club too. Barca's brick smells better than ours. A Lenglet is more attractive than a Sanchez by association.
