Ryan Mason

My take on Mason is that he's a good pro. No real weaknesses, but no real strengths either and therein lies his problem. Mason does not look like the type of player who will impose himself on games. He has good moments, but he also disappears.

I disagree. I dont think he disappears I just think he has been unfortunate in getting caught in attacks when we nee him in defence and vice versa. He has also been guilty of missing some great chances ... but he still keeps on going at it which is a big positive.

I do agree that he is lacking in the key stand out attribute which may him a utility player rather than a starter

For me his quick transitioning and assertive passing is his standout quality. I'm not sure anyone else is so relentless at moving the ball forward and trying to find gaps.

His defensive work leaves a lot to be desired. Same for Bentaleb. But agree with the rest, he's a good, steady pro, but he doesn't excel in any area.

I'm not sure I would say that is unfortunate. Part of being a good central midfielder is knowing when to attack and when to defend, see Gareth Barry against Germany at the 2010 World Cup as classic examples of how NOT to play the position.

But he doesn't play incisive or defence splitting passes like Eriksen or Lamela and doesn't score as many as them. For all of your Eriksen bashing, he still can be one of our most important players even during a 5 minute spell.

Barry is absolute toilet yet I've heard people single him out as a role model

Masons problem is that in the role he has played for us he has to nail the discipline. It's what Dier excels at

Mason has always struggled with injuries. I think if he were ever fully fit he would be a much better player. He would be able to build up a rhythm and gain confidence. And the fact that Poch has been playing him pre-season suggests he has a role to play - unlike Bentaleb and Chadli.

True but it doesn't mean that Eriksen is extremely poor at times. Just because he's an international he shouldn't be given any extra leeway.

No one is saying ( not me anyway) that he should be given extra leeway, the point is he is streets ahead of Mason in every part of the game. And saying that Eriksen is extremely poor is stretching it a bit, he ( like everyone else) has poor games at times that's it.

Yes and Poch also made him captain for the first two friendlies. No big deal but it surely says something.

Mason's problem is that he has had two seasons in the first team. The first in a team in transition, alongside a similarly inexperienced player, in a deeper position than he was unaccustomed to and in front of an weak defence, with a constantly changing line up. His second season was blighted by injury.

Yeah I sound by disagree with that
One thing that changed massively last year for us was that we learned how to defend as a team and it makes the centre mids job easier

Masons probelm is up againat genuine too level players for a role there or in the 3 in front. As I've said previously he will get games and I'd say plenty to be fair assuming he stays fit. I don't think we will upgrade in him with a transfer but we may have a tailor made improvement for the mid role in the youngsters coming through (winks)

We need to remember that Mason was brought into the team the season before to move the ball forwards quickly and make us more of an attacking threat. He was successful at that and our form improved when he became a first team player.

He started last season well but then got injured, spent a long time out and never recovered his form.

His absence allowed Dembele to cement his place in the side, which turned out to be a blessing, but it denied us the chance to see what he could be like if he had established a partnership with Dier and played in front of a settled defence.

I think that he has got a very tough task ahead of him if he wants to be a first 11 player but I think that it would be a mistake to write him off.

So far he has always played deeper for us. Moving the ball from defence to the AMs before the opponent's defence have time to organise. The thing we couldn't do for several years after Modric left.

I'm not anti Mason and have been a supporter of him but you nailed when saying that Dembele has cemented his place and of course we have Dier

I think Mason is a good back up for a central role behind the striker but he has to get more goals... For a player with great youth record of scoring (and he scored some crackers) his senior level scoring record is gash
